Worser Bay School Children love learning. At our school, the entire school community can: * See achievement celebrated and children valued as individuals; * Feel motivated and inspired to participate; * Experience success. WORSER BAY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Ka mau te wehi! (Grasp the Magic!) Term 4, Week 5, Friday 14 November 2014 Kia ora e te Whanau o Whetukairangi Well, the Wild Things roared their terrible roars and caused a major rumpus!! Thanks to all who made Sunday such a wonderful success. Special thanks to the Fair Committee who have toiled away for the best part of 2014 to make this happen and it certainly did happen! It is a great feeling when you see so many community members getting stuck in on the day too. This even includes parents whose children have moved on some years ago, which is an incredible testament. I have been researching a little into community engagement and have found the work of Tamarack - Institute of Community Engagement in Canada pretty interesting: http:// tamarackcommunity.ca/about.html Tamarack's motto "Better Together" is certainly what we are also promoting. Whether it be building teacher/parent partnerships, collegial relationships, child/ teachers, parent/parents, school/schools, school/wider community, school/global connections… "Better Together" sums it all up. It was great to be able to celebrate belonging to such a vibrant and dynamic community on Thursday night at the Roxy. It was lovely to have the chance to get to know each other better and make new connections. We have plenty more opportunity to connect before the year is out: Data Meetings, Fish and Chip Night (Years 3-6), Assemblies, Karakia, Sharing Learning Morning (Years 0-3), The Wrap, Year 6 Dinner/Year 6 Parent Drinks...... it's certainly never dull! Some of us have been able to run workshops for others. Here is a reversibility workshop in action. Here is another workshop. This one is looking at rounding and compensating. Student comments: "It was good teaching other people my strongest strategy." "It was fun learning different people’s ways of problem solving." "It was good to be taught not by a teacher, but a student." "It gives other people a chance to share what they know about maths." Staying safe online... Check out this post on the blog about staying safe online: http://matarikiwbs.blogspot.co.nz/2014/11/stay-safe-online.html 4 Funky Friday Today we went to the beach. Children ran their own skills workshops. The workshops were things like cricket, karate, music, football, drawing and sand castle making. What a great day! by Juliette Designing Inventions We are using the flow chart to design inventions. These ideas were developed by a group including Rory, Betty Jo and Manaia. Imagine a cat with mittens! It would have real trouble having a meal of Tui, wouldn’t it! Amazing creative thinking! Before making prototypes of inventions we are learning to draw accurate diagrams. This amazing cross section diagram of a kettle is by Sophia. This house appears to be ‘blasting off’. Nga mihi Jude Just to remind you once more… New Online Payment System This term, we are piloting a new secure payment system with Wrap it Up Limited. They’ve developed an online ordering and payment facility for all school activities. This means you will be able to select a range of school “products” such as sausage sizzles, school excursions and sporting activities and pay for them online either by internet banking or credit/debit card. The great thing about it is that you will be able to select activities for more than one child and order sausages (for example) for multiple weeks at a time. Think of it like a shop. You can select as many or as few “products” as you like for one or more children. You go to the checkout, confirm your purchases and pay for them. The system also stores a record of your purchases in your account. It’s quick and simple. And there’s no more paper permission slips as this is also done online. We can reduce our paper and you can stop worrying about mislaying notices. While it will not be mandatory to use the Wrap it Up system, we recommend it as it will help us reduce the hours currently spent on the administration of payments and financial record keeping. We’ve had a 4-year association with Wrap it Up Limited and, to date, they have always provided us a fantastic service that we can rely on. They have very good systems in place and have always provided us with excellent customer service. Junior Team BALL RUN RESULTS 1st Prize Two nights accommodation at the Cattlestop Martinborough. Ticket number 975 - Karen Wyreweden 2nd Prize $500 online voucher for Interisland Ferry. Ticket number 498 - Nick Wykes 3rd Prize Nespresso Coffee Machine. To help with the pilot, we’ll be sending out a number of surveys throughout the term to gather your feedback. As well as the surveys, please feel free to feed comments back to the school office directly, or contact Jane at Wrap it 6 COMMUNITY NOTICES Holy Cross School Year 7 Enrolments There are some spaces still available for Year 7 students at Holy Cross School for the 2015 school year.
