NO PLASTIC BAGS Check out hornsby.nsw.gov.au/waste to see if you’re recycling right. 10 2 As 2014 draws to an end and we get closer to Christmas and the New Year, I have been reflecting on Hornsby Shire Council’s performance over the past twelve months. Our role in local government is to provide a range of services to the community, and since we are using ratepayer’s money to do so, I believe it is vital that we are financially responsible with our budget. One of the achievements I am most proud of as Mayor is the strong financial position Council is in – our data indicates that all of our key financial indicators have substantially improved in 2014. This is an excellent result, and I strive to continue delivering high-quality services to Hornsby Shire residents in the most cost-effective way possible. Among the replies were a playground on the east side/school side of the highway, and an unleashed dog area for Mt Colah. The nearest unleashed dog areas to Mt Colah at present are Berowra Heights and Asquith. “I have been to both these areas which can be busy at times,” said Lucy Barker who has initiated an area for Mt Colah. “I am a newcomer to Mt Colah and so having an area to meet local dog owners in a community social setting seemed a good idea,” added Lucy. I met up with Lucy and some other dog owners at Oxley Reserve in Beryl Ave on Mon 03 Nov. All were keen for an area to be set aside in Mt Colah. Whilst there, I also met up with some nearby neighbours who had some concerns with the usage of the reserve and the need for an upgrade of the reserve. “Although I have suggested 2[OH\5HVHUYH,VKDOOOHDYHDQ\¿QDO outcome to my A Ward Councillors and Hornsby Council staff on the most appropriate area for Mt Colah,” said Lucy. Crime Prevention Officer, Snr Con Paul Cleary says: Hornsby Police has recently taken reports of stealing from vehicle incidents. Lock it or Lose it! Of concern is a large number of these reports involved cars that did NOT have the doors locked. On several occasions cars in the Berowra area were left overnight unlocked with one car having a handbag left on the passenger seat. To a thief this is way too tempting and gives the area a name (easy target for future thefts and possible house breaks). So please don’t leave spare change, property or anything of value in sight inside your car and remember to lock the doors. Be Alert to Break-ins: Just to alert everyone there has been attempted house break-ins in Rosamond & Silvia Streets Hornsby last week, so they seem to be active in the Mt Wilga Hospital area and in the early hours too. Take extra precautions if you can and DOVROHDYHVRPHJURXQGÀRRUOLJKWV on. Door Knockers: If you are approached by someone asking for donations please do a little research and don’t always rely on what you are told by them. Scammers and con-artists are very well versed in what to say. Any information please call Hornsby police 9476 9799 or Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000. Please also note, a lot of organisations and charities rely on donations and I encourage anyone looking to donate, to do so through RI¿FLDO websites; that way your money is getting to where you want it to go & to the people who need it. “At the same time we will also be collecting items for the “The Dish” which is the Hornsby Shire food service for people in our area experiencing homelessness,” said Penny. Donations of long life foods and personal items like toiletries will be accepted on the night of the Christmas Markets. The Christmas Night Market will be held on Friday 21st November from 5 till 9pm at Berowra Community Centre, The Gully Road, Berowra. There will be a host of exciting markets stalls, food vendors, HQWHUWDLQPHQWUDIÀHVFRIIHHFDUW community stalls and heaps more! Just the place to do some serious Christmas shopping! We are all being urged to be on the lookout for turtles during November to help researchers better understand how to protect these native creatures as they leave the safety of the water to lay their eggs on dry land. The University of Western Sydney is launching Turtle Month in November to raise awareness about the incredible danger facing female turtles as they make the transformation from graceful aquatic survivors to slow and defenceless landlubbers. As part of Turtle Month, the University is calling on people to download the TurtleSAT app, which gives users the chance to log turtle sightings to help researchers develop new protection strategies. The TurtleSAT app is a simple tool with a big impact. By recording the location and species of turtles spotted in the wild, users are giving Australian scientists the edge in tracking where turtles make their nests. “Female turtles are up against it when they leave the safety of the water to lay their eggs,” said Dr Ricky Spencer, from the UWS School of Social Science and Health. “Drought and urban development may have taken away all the old nesting spots, roads and cars are often in their way, and once the HJJVDUH¿QDOO\ODLGIR[HVDQGRWKHU predators can sniff them out and eat them before they’ve had a chance to hatch.” At Last! Council engaged its own consultant to prepare a design for the relocation of the poles, and this proposal was lodged with Ausgrid in May 2014. We asked for design changes to ensure the plans complied with network and safety standards, and the revised design ZDVDSSURYHGDQGFHUWL¿HGE\ Ausgrid in September. Council has advised that it is currently selecting a contractor to carry out the pole relocations. The timeframe for these works now rests largely with Council and its contractor. Ausgrid will continue to assist Council as it works to complete its project, while ensuring any impact on a safe and reliable power supply to the area is minimised. Peter Gledhill, Regional Manager, Ausgrid Dear Bush Tele, I see Hornsby Council is inviting UHVLGHQWVWRWKHRI¿FLDORSHQLQJRI Hornsby Pool and celebrations at Hornsby Park in November. They are also asking people to ride bikes instead of driving cars and WKH\ZLOOUH¿OOWKHLUZDWHUERWWOHV instead of buying and discarding plastic ones. Good move as we need to be more environmental and socially conscious. I notice Hornsby Park does have a couple of water bubblers from many years ago but I can’t see any shared cycle ways leading to the pool or around the CBD despite millions of residents dollars being spent on roads and footpaths in Hornsby CBD over the last few years. Cycle ways could have been provided for little cost with a little forward planning when they were doing the roads and footpaths. Is anybody listening? Mick Marr, ONLINE you tell us! Classes at the school have been running successfully every Wednesday since the beginning of the school year in 2014. Since 2011, children who don’t attend Special Religious Education (SRE/ scripture) classes have had an option to go to philosophical ethics classes run by the charity, Primary Ethics. Ethics classes were approved by the NSW parliament in December 2010. The Primary Ethics program at Wideview moved from just a possibility to reality when two parents with children at the school EHFDPHLWV¿UVWYROXQWHHUHWKLFV teachers. All ethics teachers are supported by an ethics co-ordinator and, in Wideview’s case, this is local resident, Judith Ellis. The program at Wideview has gone from strength to strength in its short WLPHDQGQRZ¿QGVLWQHHGVPRUH volunteer teachers from the wider community so that classes can be offered as an option for all students from Kindy through to Year 6. Isaac Truskett-Jones, a Year 3 student, is enthusiastic about participating in ethics. “Ethics is fun”, he said. “We learn about doing the right thing. We make new friends”. His older brother, Jake, who is in Year 6 equally enjoys the experience, saying “It’s really social. We all get a say. The scenarios to talk about are challenging and fun”. Their mother, Karen, feels it is a fantastic opportunity for the boys to develop an insight into today’s ethical dilemmas. “They develop skills of empathy and understanding of how other people feel,” she said. The principal of Wideview, Kim McTernan, said that he was extremely happy with the level of support for the current ethics classes and wanted to ensure all students wishing to participate were accommodated with an increase in the number of volunteer teachers. He said that he liked the idea that the children are taught to look at ethical issues from all sides and are then encouraged to make 8 up their own minds on the issue, based on logic and sound reasons. “The main focus of the school is teaching students to be life-long learners and the processes utilised in the ethics classes lends itself to this philosophy and help equip the children with the ability to make informed and sensible decisions,” he added. Mr. McTernan said that the addition of a Kindergarten curriculum for ethics has paved the way for students enrolling in 2015 to participate in ethics classes from Kindergarten to Year 6. Judith Ellis said that ethics is not about telling children what to think, but teaching them how to think. The curriculum engages the students in discussion and encourages them to build their own opinions about topics such as boasting, fairness, and sharing, while listening to the opinions of other students. She added that all volunteer teachers received training and follow a curriculum designed for people with no experience with teaching or discussing philosophy with primary school-aged students. Volunteer ethics teachers must be able to commit to 30-40 minutes of class time each Wednesday, as well as a similar amount of preparation time at home. Anyone interested in volunteering to be an ethics teacher should visit the Primary Ethics website at http://www.primaryethics.com.au or contact Wideview Public School Primary Ethics Coordinator, Judith Ellis, judyellis@westnet.com.au Tel: 9456 3991. Thursday 13 November 2014 9 HEALTH AND BEAUTY PRICELESS PEARLS By Ralph Estherby He could remember his name, his age, the day of the week, and what he had been doing a few minutes before but he could not remember the accident or what happened immediately after… I was visiting this young man in hospital who had suffered a pretty severe knock to the head after a fall of about five metres – at first there were concerns that he had spinal injuries but thankfully things were not as bad as they first seemed and he would be OK in time – just a bit fuzzy in the memory stakes for a couple of weeks. It reminded me of a time when I couldn’t remember – I was the one who had fallen of my bike and knocked myself out – I recall that for weeks afterwards I struggled to remember some words and my reactions were slowed and I just felt like I was walking through a fog. This week we have celebrated Remembrance Day – the commemoration of the moment that the guns fell silent at the end of the First World War. All over the country and around the world we slowed down for a few moments and remembered what had been sacrificed and achieved for us by those who have gone before. The only thing that ensures that this memorial occurs and is taken seriously is our willingness and determination to remember. When I left the hospital I went back to my car – or I attempted to go back to my car – the problem was that I was in a Hospital that I had never visited before and although I knew that I had parked on level 5 I had no idea how to get back through the ‘rabbit warren’ of corridors to where I was parked. Eventually after two failed attempts I circled around the building and climbed the staircase to find my car. So many things surround us that we should remember: our PIN numbers; our passwords; where we parked our cars… but various ‘knocks to the head’ hinder us: our busyness; the complexity of life and; how long ago did we review the item that is important… It would be a terrible thing if no-one remembered next Remembrance Day, it seems inconceivable but we don’t always recall the good others have done for us. “Bless the LORD, and do not forget not all His benefits: … He satisfies your mouth with good things, and makes you new” Psalms 103:2–5 Let’s make sure that we never forget all He has done! DO YOU HAVE A COMMENT OR A QUESTION? ralph.estherby@gmail.com ‘Breakthrough Church’, meets at 9.30am Sundays at the Performing Arts Centre (Old Bowling Club) - Edgeworth David Ave Hornsby 9477 7222 10 MEN LESS STRESSED: New Survey Says HOW SAFE IS YOUR CHILD’S VEHICLE RESTRAINT? Make sure your child travels safely in the car by attending Hornsby Shire Council’s Child Restraint Safety Checking Day on Monday 24 November. To be held at the Thornleigh Brickpit Sports Stadium, parents and carers can have their child restraints, harnesses and booster seats checked for safety and correct fit by an authorised restraint fitter. Attendance at this free event is by appointment only by booking with Council’s Road Safety Officer on 9847 6856 or 9847 6616. Australian women experiencing higher levels of stress and lower levels of wellbeing than men. A new survey shows Australian men are doing better than women when it comes to stress and wellbeing with men reporting higher levels of wellbeing and lower levels of stress than their female counterparts. Released for National Psychology Week (9-15 November) the Stress and Wellbeing in Australia survey 2014, conducted by the Australian Psychological Society (APS), found that, for the first time, men have significantly higher levels of wellbeing than women. The annual survey provides a yearly snapshot of the overall wellbeing of Australians, suggesting 2014 was a tougher year for women, with the fairer sex reporting significantly higher levels of stress. Family and personal finance issues were identified as the leading sources of stress for both sexes, but these factors are having a greater effect on women. More than half (53%) of Australian women cite personal financial issues as a major source of stress, compared to just 44 per cent of men. Professor Lyn Littlefield, Executive Director of the APS, said identifying sources of stress is the first step to effectively managing stress. “Stress can have an extremely detrimental effect on a person’s mental and physical health. It’s important to first identify the cause of stress to work towards avoiding the source, or adopting stress management behaviours,” Professor Littlefield said. More than 70 per cent (72%) of Australians reported their current stress levels had an impact on their physical health. Worryingly, more than 60 per cent (64%) reported current stress levels had an impact on their mental health. Women also reported a greater impact of stress on their health. Identifying warning signs and triggers, establishing workable routines, keeping healthy, changing negative ‘self-talk’, practising relaxation and getting appropriate support are suggested by the APS as effective measures to manage stress. “Talking about mental health is difficult for a lot of Australians. National Psychology Week provides an opportunity to start a conversation, or encourage Australians who might be struggling to ask for help,” Professor Littlefield said. The APS provides a free referral service for the general public, GPs and other health professionals who are seeking the advice and assistance of a psychologist at www.findapsychologist.org.au. /HYHO 3DFLILF+LJKZD\ +RUQVE\ RSS+QVE\UDLOZD\VWDWLRQ Mel’s Hair & Beauty Local Family Owned & Operated Funeral Directors Specialising in all areas of HAIR AND BEAUTY EARS, NOSE & NAVEL PIERCING 9456 2188 Shop 10, Berowra Village, Turner Road For a reliable, supportive, accommodating g & personalised service contact 9482 9069. ȟȦȩȥȪșȰ Assessments Behaviour Anxiety & more Preschool to High School ages THE BUSH TELEGRAPH WEEKLY RPaT/PQb^[dcTRPaTUd]TaP[bR^\Pd ²G_b[Y^WgYdXi_eRUSQecUi_e[^_gi_eb\_fUT_^URUcd³ fffPQb^[dcTRPaTUd]TaP[bR^\Pd !#WabSPh&SPhbPfTTZ Arne Neirinckx \_SQ\bUcYTU^dV_b$ ibc SOCIAL SNIPPETS In Memory of Gordon Knight 9 June 1940 - 4 September 2014 The family of Gordon Knight would like to thank the many people who attended his funeral and expressed their condolences when he passed away in September. The event was hosted by Peter Wolfe and Lynda Dryden at the Bali House on Bradleys Beach on Dangar Island. Over 60 guests heard from Gail Browning, NSW Volunteer CoOrdinator about the role that TOP plays in protecting the rain forest to provide habitat for orangutans and other threatened species, and in rehabilitating orangutans displaced through the spread of palm oil plantations. Gail informed guests about the importance of avoiding products containing palm oil. “The expansion of palm oil plantations is the main cause of deforestation in Borneo and Sumatra, and often leads to adult orangutans being killed and their babies orphaned,” said Gail. Long Live … The King of Coffee! Triple H 100.1 FM Listeners crowned Black Mocha Cafe in Turramurra as King of Coffee for the Hornsby/Ku-Ring-Gai area, announced at a function on Monday 3rd November. TOP funds orphanages and protects areas of remaining rainforest. A ‘guest orangutan’ came along to reinforce the message and was pleased to find that all the canapés and cocktails prepared by Lynda and her team were palm oil free. Peter and Lynda encourage Islanders to safeguard an area of rainforest the size of Dangar Island for $35 a year. Many have taken up the challenge already and donations are still coming in. Supporters have passed the $4000 mark already. Locals Urged to Take up the Challenge “Other communities in Hornsby Shire take up the challenge for their local area and would be pleased to advise them on setting up events,” said Peter. There is a chance to meet up with Leif Cocks, President of The Orangutan Project Australia when he Station Manager Philippa Bird said, “Triple H 100.1 FM listeners from the area were invited to nominate their favourite coffee shop to enter the King of Coffee competition.” “We had more than 50 nominations, and 30 coffee shops entered. By the closing date, we’d received over 2000 votes and the winner, by a margin of 100 votes, was The Black Mocha Cafe on Pacific Highway in Turramurra, said Philippa. The award function was a great success, with “The Hubbub” being broadcast live from the Black Mocha, to the delight of guests, who feasted on delicious canapes and sweet treats freshly made by Claudette Osterberg. Co-owner, John Osterberg was on hand to supervise the preparation of his signature winning coffees. Philippa said, “Thanks to the popularity with listeners and coffee shop owners alike, we will be running a similar competition annually.” Photo: Triple H 100.1 FM Station Manager Philippa Bird with winners of the King of Coffee competition Black Mocha Café at Turramurra. visits Sydney. There are several causes of heel pain the most common being PLANTAR FASCIITIS Plantar Fasciitis is simply inflammation of the big strong band on the bottom of the foot (the plantar fascia). Symptoms usually begin as a "stone bruise" type of pain increasing to chronic pain especially first thing in the morning or after rest. Sometimes there may be a sense that something tears or "gives" in the arch of the foot during sport. This kind of pain is easily treated by realigning and supporting the foot and leg which reduces the trauma allowing the injured foot to recover. FOOT AND LEG PAIN prevents patients of all ages from enjoying daily exercise such as walking thus creating a vicious cycle. Pain - no exercise - weight increase - more pain. Results in High blood pressure, Diabetes, Joint abuse, surgical replacements etc An easy mobility program is specifically devised for individual patients to break the cycle and return to a healthy lifestyle.
