We are glad you came to join with us in our worship today. We hope that you have felt God’s love in a new, refreshing way… From Fr. Tony: “When one finds a worthy wife, her value is far beyond pearls. Her husband, entrusting his heart to her, has an unfailing prize. She brings him good, and not evil, all the days of her life” (Proverbs 31:10-12). Although this passage from the Book of Proverbs seems to be referring to a husband and wife, I cannot help but think about our Church. At the conference that I am at here in Illinois (that is where I am writing this column), we, priests, are reminded that we have been married to the Church. We are Christ. We are alter Christus (another Christ’s). Therefore, like Christ, our bride is Holy Mother Church. She is our bride, and because she is our bride, that means we value her like husbands value their wives. However, you are not off the hook. By your baptism, Christ is in you. You are also like Christ. Therefore, you are also called to value the Church as well. Indeed, the Church is worthy and far beyond pearls is her value. All of us are called to value her beyond pearls. She brings good to us through the grace of God, and not evil, all her days. Therefore, as husbands take care of their wives, we should also take care of that which we value, our bride. One way we can do this is through the Diocesan Ministries Appeal. Not only does this fund help our particular churches but it also helps our local church, the Diocese of New Ulm. Our parish goal for Our Lady of Victory’s is $2,739.87; St. Anne’s is $8,581.47; St. Mary’s is $3,153.43; St. Mathias is $3,980.56. In addition to all the ministries the appeal supports at the diocesan level, all gifts over our goal will go to support the furnace situation in the social hall at Our Lady of Victory, the support of our school at St. Anne, the liturgical environment at St. Mary, and the general expenses at St. Mathias. Keep in mind that our needs might change as time goes on, but these were the projects that the various Administrative Councils decided on. This year’s theme, “Rivers of Living Water will flow from within Him,” is from John 7:38. The DMA offers us an opportunity to do our part to support the ministries that help to build the Church right here in the Diocese of New Ulm. Next Sunday is Commitment Sunday for the 2014 Diocesan Ministries Appeal. Watching the video today, we are reminded of the good work the DMA is doing in ministries too big for parishes to do alone, but ministries that are important to us. Remember, in supporting the DMA, we contribute to those important ministries in the diocese, but we also support the projects I have identified above for our parishes. As we reflect on what our pledge should be, prayerfully keep in mind God’s generosity to you. Recognizing that generosity, the DMA offers a great opportunity to return to God some of that generosity we have received. Please pray and consider to support the DMA and how much we value our mother, the Church (whose value is beyond pearls). YEAR FOR CONSECRATED LIFE The Year for Consecrated Life begins on the first Sunday of Advent, Nov. 30. Because this is Thanksgiving weekend, our diocesan celebration to open the Year for Consecrated Life will be the following Sunday, Dec. 7. A Day for Consecrated Life will be held in New Ulm. All are welcome; youth and families are particularly encouraged to attend that celebration. Flyers advertising this event will go out in the parish mailing next week. A PDF is also available on the diocesan Web site, on the Office of Worship page. Also, in many parishes where sisters serve and will be present at their own parish on that day, intercessions for Mass will be provided to pray for and recognize those sisters as we begin this Year for Consecrated Life. Those materials will be provided as the date approaches. Christ through Mary, Fr.
