Dear people of Sacred Heart & St. Cecilia’s, It is undeniable that much is going on in our world, our nation, our diocese, our parishes, and in our own lives. Our lives and world are ever-changing—and not always in ways that lead us to God. We have to think about God so we don’t just wallow in the world. Today’s Solemn Feast of Christ the King helps us think about God, as we take note of another year ending in “God’s time.” Next Sunday will be the 1st Sunday of Advent—the time to ready ourselves for the celebration of Christmas—the birthday of Jesus Our Lord. Christ the King is pictured in the Gospel today, as deciding the fate of ALL at the last judgment. “Then the king will say to those on His right, ‘Come you who are blessed by my Father’” [Matthew 25:34]. Under His title of Son of Man, Jesus comes in glory for that final judgment. Jesus is also seen as a shepherd who “separates the sheep from the goats” [25:32]. God had promised a Shepherd King through His prophet Ezekiel. “I will appoint one shepherd over them to pastor them, my servant David; he shall pasture them and be their shepherd” [Ezekiel 34:23]. “All the nations will be assembled before Him” [Matthew 25:32]—which means all people of all times. This magnificent scene in St. Mathew’s Gospel pictures the final judgment with everyone assembled, as the Lord returns in His glory. Judgment is based on the presence or absence of acts of mercy toward the poor and needy. Jesus undeniably associates himself with those in need. “Whatever you did for one of the least brothers of mine, you did for Me.” [Matthew 25:40]. Earlier in the Gospel of St. Matthew, Jesus insisted on complete love of God as “the greatest and first commandment” [Matthew 22:38]. But He added immediately, “The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself” [22:39]. The First Letter of St. John puts the two commandments in perspective. “If anyone says, ‘I love God,’ but hates his brother, he is a liar; for whoever does not love a brother who he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen” [1 John 4:20]. It is not surprising, therefore, that all will be judged by their response to the needy—a true indication of one’s very faith in God. God, help US [your people] have a right-attitude toward YOU. Inspire us to recognize You as our King, and respond with love to the needy. Fr. Peter Augustine, OSB 23 23 23 24 25 27 Diocesan Poverty Relief collection, all Masses CCD, Sacr.
