WINTER 2013 Winding Trails Newsletter Fostering a Love for the Outdoors • Developing Leadership and Life Skills • Creating a Sense of Community DIRECTOR’S CHAIR Dear Friends, Earlier this year I had the pleasure of meeting Rev. Joan Phelps. She was born in the cabin that used to stand on Chimney Island. She lived there with her two older brothers and her father who was a groundsman for Avon Old Farms School. She attended Winding Trails Summer Day Camp the first year it opened in 1947. She can remember campers being dropped off on Farmington Ave and walking down Walton Way past her cabin on the way to camp. Rev. Phelps attended camp every year moving her way up to CIT and eventually to Assistant Waterfront Director back in 1961. Walton Pond was her second home. She told me stories of swimming with black snakes and getting the treat to swim to the island in the pond. She remembers the counselors and all the fun things they use to do. She also remembers eating game meals out on the island in Walton Pond with Vern Priest. He was the forester from Avon Old Farms who would hunt and fish all the property around the school. It was wonderful to hear the joy in her voice as she talked about how her experiences “here in the woods” shaped her life. It was also interesting to hear her describe the struggles the Board of Directors had keeping Walton Pond free of algae and vegetation. I had always thought our problems with Walton Pond were somewhat recent, but it had been an issue for over 50 years. I was just thrilled to have the opportunity to show Rev. Phelps the newly renovated Walton Pond. Needless to say she was very excited and pleased to see the pristine new pond. It is stories like this one that remind me how lucky we are to have a facility like Winding Trails in our community. It was the vision and foresight of some wonderful people 65 years ago that made this possible. With their wisdom and the help of many Boards and staff since then, literally thousands of children and families have memories, such as Rev. Phelps does, that are not only heartwarming and interesting but also life changing. As 2012 comes to a close, I hope you take the time to reflect on the past year and I hope those reflections are positive and they involve fond memories of time spent at Winding Trails. As the weather turns colder our thoughts move to the winter season. Mother Nature played a trick on us last year dumping a nasty snowfall in October and never giving us much more after that. For the fourth time in 40 years we never opened for cross country skiing. We also did not skate and that has never happened either. We are optimistic that we will get a winter this year. With 230 sets of brand new Fisher skis in our rental shop and new lights on Walton Pond, our skiing and skating programs are ready to go. As you look through this newsletter you will see a variety of programs available to you and your family. Many of the programs are not weather dependent. Winding Trails is open all year, your sort of enjoyment may change based on the season, but the opportunities are there. As we move into the holiday season, on behalf of the entire Board and staff, I would like to wish each of you and your families a safe and joyous holiday. If you have any suggestions or questions, please do not hesitate to call. Sincerely, Scott Brown, CPRP Executive Director 2 WINTER NEWSLETTER GENERAL INFORMATION Winding Trails 2012 Board of Directors Dan Escajeda, President Scott Zenke, Vice President Betsy Sargent, Secretary Jill Best, Treasurer Kerry Callahan Enrico Chiarillo MEMBERSHIP REMINDER Chris Chisholm Sal Corio Shaun Delaney Geri Hogan Michael Sacks Julie Tacinelli Winding Trails 2012 Committee Member Volunteers Paul Amato Mike Cenci Brian Cunningham Mike Daly Laura Faga Paul Ficks Rick Flagg Steve Jeurs John LaForest-Roys Craig Matava Paul Meehan Jim Platosh Jamie Sullivan Louise Teodosio Colleen Walsh By now you should have received your renewal form for 2013 membership. Did anyone experience that forecast here in Connecticut? Many spent last winter commenting on the spring-like weather that we experienced between a few short cold snaps. With a cloudy sky on the morning of February 2nd, Chuckles, the Manchester Lutz Museum groundhog, cancelled the rest of winter for 2012 and predicted an early spring. Well, it sure appeared that it was true given the photographs above showing no snow along the shoreline and the thin ice cover on Dunning Lake and Walton Pond that same day. What a contrast between our experiences that occurred during the prior winter of 2010/11! Looking back through the ski seasons at the Winding Trails Cross Country Ski Center, which was established in 1972, one does notice that it does not always snow enough in Connecticut for us to open. We need a minimum of 6 to 8 inches of snow, which usually falls between December and early March, in order to groom the trails so people can enjoy the experience. The average days that the Center has opened works out to 27.7 days each season. The most days open for skiing surprisingly did not include the winter of 2010/11… records show the best was 1993/94 followed by 2002/03 with 73 and 72 days respectively. There were four years, 1991/92, 1997/98, 1998/99, and 2011/12 that the Center did not open because the minimum was not met. Not sure why we experienced that weather? The word was out that unlike the winter of 2011, the jet stream, that upper-atmosphere air flow across the country, stayed far to the north which allowed the warmer air from the south to invade the northern states. We adjusted quite well to those weather changes but what happens with the wildlife and plants during a season like that? Many might think that it would be easier on them. The deer do adjust much like we do and take advantage of easy travel and access to their food sources without the deep snow. Yet, is it an advantage for all? The constant cold with a snow cover that acts like a blanket over the ground is what the wildlife and trees of Connecticut are best adapted to. For trees, the snow protects the roots with the constant 4 cold air keeping the sap underground. This year’s temperature changes from the 20’s at night warming to the mild 40’s, 50’s, and even 60’s during the day trick the trees into thinking that spring had arrived. The sap travels up into the trees during the day triggering the buds, both flower and leaf, to open prematurely. A hard freeze kills these opening buds. Trees are resilient and can produce new leaf buds but the seed production, from the flowers, is lost. Also, the true spring will be missing the nectar supplies needed by emerging insects. What impact will that cause for pollination later in the spring and during the summer season? And what of those living within the brooks and streams? With normal cold temperatures, the ice cover provides a lowturbulence habitat which allows fish to rest during a period of lower metabolism and any food scarcity. The open water and the extra water flow from the rain can cause them to be more active and can push certain species of fish into a stressed state and even to death. Also, without a good snow pack, there will not be the usual combined snow melt and spring rain flooding, which is needed to move the accumulated sediment and provide gravel areas that the fish need to spawn. Looking forward, what does the forecast for the Northeast in 2013 look like? The AccuWeather forecast on October 17th, 2012 predicted that temperatures may start out slightly above to near normal, but as the season progresses and some snow accumulates, it will turn colder than normal in February. “I-95 this year in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic will have more snow than they did last year. However, as far as above-normal snowfall goes, from New York City on south and west has a better shot with more mixed rain and snow systems in New England,” AccuWeather Lead Long-Range Forecaster Paul Pastelok said. A couple of larger storms could unleash above-normal snowfall in the major cities, as the winter setup should allow big storms to form off the East Coast. This setup we saw in October with Storm Sandy and Winter Storm Athena. The best chance for the big snowstorms will arrive during the middle to latter part of the season, including January and February. The Farmers’ Almanac forecast for the Northeast is cold and snowy with “red-flagging” of the February 12th to 15th and March 20th to 23rd for major coastal storms along the Atlantic seaboard. These storms will bring strong winds and heavy precipitation. So, after all this information, what’s your guess? WINTER NEWSLETTER NEWS AND Views FROST AND RIME ICE During the winter, frozen water can take on many forms that affect how we travel – slippery ice covered roads and frost heaves; what home tasks we perform – sanding a walkway and chipping away frozen snow on a driveway; or the winter activities that we participate in – a fast game of ice hockey and catching some fish through the ice. There are other forms of winter frozen water that can take us to a place of wonder. When I hear the word ‘frost’, I remember listening to a childhood story about Jack Frost, as a tiny elf, painting delicate crystal patterns on the storm windows of my room. I would wake up to gaze at them as I tried to figure out how it was done. As I got older, I discovered that Nature was the true artist. The delicate patterns occur from a process called sublimation. This occurs when a layer of air that is filled with water vapor, which is a gas, changes directly into a solid without forming a liquid. It happens when the glass of a window has a surface temperature below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the freezing temperature of water. Rime ice is a dramatic image to view up close. It happens from supercooled water droplets in the air which freeze instantly upon contact with a cold surface. The quantity of water droplets in the air, the air temperature, and the type of wind determines which kind of rime ice will form. Hard rime, as observed in the photograph of the Mount Washington Observatory in New Hampshire, forms Top to bottom: Hard rime at the when low clouds Mt. Washington Observatory cover mountain © Joe Dodge, soft rime tops or high ridges © AccWeather.com and frost in winter combined on glass © Tim Stone. with a strong wind and temperatures between 17 and 29 degrees Fahrenheit. It has the least water droplets in the air, which mix with ice crystals, so it forms a thick white comb-like appearance that is difficult to remove from objects because it is very dense. Soft rime is often seen near brooks, streams, and rivers in Connecticut. It is a coating of ice that forms on the grass, rocks, and trees close to a waterway. It is not formed by the water that splashes up over rocks onto the banks or by glaze ice which occurs from a freezing rain or drizzle. It is milky white in color with a feathery or spiky appearance on objects which is caused when the moist water droplets in the air combine with a light wind. It is easily shaken off of objects. Photos © Mary Holland STORIES IN THE SNOW While wandering through the trails on property during winter, one encounters stories written in the snow. These stories give us a brief glimpse of an event that happened just an hour before or a few days prior. The event might be a single creature passing by or an interaction between many. Maybe, you’ll see a similar one in your travels and be able to recognize it. Sometimes tiny footprints with a thin line between leave a trail from a small hole coming out of the snow to a nearby fallen log. Looking closely, the track is just a tenth of an inch in length with larger footprints of five toes in front of smaller prints having only four. A small line is between the pair of prints. Who is that small and would be on the top of the snow? There’s a good chance it’s a white-footed or deer mouse. When they feel safe, they often travel atop the snow when collecting food or moving from place to place. It’s hard to tell which kind it might be by just looking at the tracks. The habitat around you will help in trying to decide. If you’re in a coniferous forest, there’s a good chance it’s the deer mouse. The white-footed mouse likes the deciduous forests. When you have a mixed forest, it’s a guess unless you actually see the mouse. Because mice hop like a rabbit, the hind feet land in front as you can see in the photograph. Their tail dragging on the snow makes the thin line. When the line is absent, they’ve held their tails high in the air. Occasionally, we run across a busy location around a central point. That is true with the second photograph. Notice the tracks coming from all directions to the tree stump. Upon looking at the tracks, one notices four oval pads with some claw marks above them and a single mounded pad behind. Some of you might recognize the track as a small version of dog tracks that are common in most neighborhoods. Many red fox, a member of the dog family, have visited this stump and marked it much like your dog would. Believe it or not, this is like writing you a reminder note or posting a message to Facebook. The reminder note would let you know that you had already searched this area for food or stashed a caught prey nearby. The posting to Facebook might let other fox know your gender, age, if you’re available, plus much more. Bet you didn’t realize how much can be sent with a smell. So, if this has caught your interest, come to the Winter Carnival on February 9th and participate in the family walk about animal tracks and scat. I’m sure there will be lots of stories for us to find and follow. After a year of planning, Nature’s Porch has begun to take shape. The permits and paperwork have been submitted. The site work has been completed. The foundation has been poured and the subfloor is in place. The post and beams are being set and the roof should be on by the time you receive this newsletter. We are very excited about a new building dedicated to environmental exploration and education. We look forward to people gathering as one big family for conversation and friendship, celebrating a love of the outdoors with a sense of wonder and appreciation. Nature’s Porch will be a new three-season nature building with a giant front porch, chairs and benches overlooking the southern end of Walton Pond. Nature’s Porch will have a main room that boasts a stone fireplace, post and beam construction, picture windows with window seats and oak floors milled from fallen Winding Trails trees salvaged from the October 2011 storm. The walls will be tongue and groove milled white pine, again salvaged from Winding Trails during the same storm. Nature’s Porch will have a nature library, microscopes and wall displays with storage and restrooms in the back. We would like to thank those who have generously donated to Nature’s Porch. We are still short of our goal and would welcome all of you who have not donated to join in on this wonderful project. We have a generous matching gift opportunity of 2 for 1 that triples your support. You can use the mailed donation form sent in Spetember or go to www.windingtrails. org and make your donation on-line. Every gift counts, thank you for your support. 6 The families who attended the free Trails Fund program “Zoo on the Go”, presented by The Zoo at Forest Park from Springfield, MA on November 2nd, enjoyed a variety of animals with great information about each one. The animals included a baby alligator, an albino corn snake, a chinchilla, a three-banded armadillo, a very large black and white tegu, a sulcata tortoise, and a cockatoo that talked and danced for attention during the entire presentation. The armadillo, chinchilla, and the tail of the tegu were available for touching at the end of the presentation. The next free Trails Fund Family program will be Meet the North American Porcupine on February 6th at 7:00 p.m. Details are found in the Free Programs section of this Newsletter. Our thanks go to everyone who contributed to the Trails Fund, which makes these free programs possible. WINTER NEWSLETTER NEWS AND VIEWS CAMP CORNER As we approach a new year it is always great to reflect on where you came from and then look at where you are going. As I look back at 2012 at Winding Trails Summer Day Camp, I cannot help but think of the wonderful camp experience our campers and staff enjoyed this summer. While many people may look at camp as another means to child care I like to look at camp as a gift. It is a gift that your child will truly appreciate and as a parent you will see the outcomes over the course of many years to come. Experts agree that participation in programs, like camp, go a long way toward developing essential skills needed to succeed in life. Where you may see a group of campers laughing and building a fort in the woods, the youth development professional sees problem-solving and teamwork skills being enhanced. Through activities and games, campers are growing by leaps and bounds. A camp experience truly is a classroom without walls, providing fun designed around intentional programming. At camp we focus on the whole child by providing physical, social, and developmental growth. Camp is also an equal opportunity life changer and provides hands-on experiences that allow all children to feel successful and have a sense of accomplishment. Finally, perhaps one of the greatest gains that children get from a camp experience is the opportunity to just relax, have fun, and be kids. Through positive camp experiences, children will make lasting memories and life-long friends. At camp, children are surrounded by friends and are part of a community that will take care of each other and always be a part of their lives. They will also feel safe enough to try new things and are proud of who they really are. By giving the special child in your life the gift of camp, you are giving them the ultimate gift — independence, self-confidence, and friendship. Enrollment for summer of 2013 is taking place now. Don’t miss out on this popular program! We look forward to seeing your child at camp in 2013. online registration available for all programs at www.windingtrails.org 7 FREE PROGRAMS ICE FISHING CROSS COUNTRY SKIING Each winter dozens of members enjoy the solitude of the season by ice fishing on Dunning Lake. No prior experience is necessary because there will be a training session before the start of each activity to teach you the reason behind the collection, how to collect the data, and what information needs to be reported. The level of involvement is up to the family or individual and once trained, the field work and collection times are set up to fit your schedule. Vernal Pool Breeding Survey This spring program will include going out to the many vernal pools on the property to collect data on the number of frogs and salamanders that use the pools.
