A NOTE FROM JOSEPHINE LEE As I reflect on the 2012-13 program year, I fondly remember the moments when thousands of our young singers, the lifeblood of Chicago Children’s Choir, inspired all of us with their discipline, their drive for excellence, and their curiosity about the world. They give us strength to dream about expanding the Choir’s vision to global proportions, with the goal to achieve social harmony through musical excellence. Even as we further increased our programs at home in Chicago, we took this global focus to heart. Through authentic instruction in music from around the world, collaborations with Chicago’s prestigious cultural institutions, and performance opportunities at home and abroad, we strove year-long to bring the world to our children so as to bridge geographical and cultural divides. To address this global vision of social harmony through musical excellence in 2012-13, the Choir produced Sita Ram at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance, undertook an international tour to India, and inaugurated a World Music Festival. Sita Ram was commissioned by the Choir and based on a modern interpretation of the ancient Hindu epic Ramayana. The three-show run in December 2012 featured the Choir’s top ensemble, Voice of Chicago, in collaboration with David Kersnar of Lookingglass Theatre Company, Natya Dance Theatre, Azeeza Khan of Atelier AZZA, and Inappropriate Theatre Company. In January 2013, Voice of Chicago presented Sita Ram in excerpted form to audiences in Jaipur, Delhi, Bangalore, Agra, and Chennai during the Choir’s international tour to India. Later, in February 2013, during the inaugural World Music Festival, five hundred intermediate and advanced singers from the Neighborhood Choir Program, DiMension, and Voice of Chicago presented repertoire from around the world to five hundred audience members. With Sita Ram and the India tour, Choir singers went out into the world serving as ambassadors promoting peace through song. These same singers also brought the world to their peers in communities throughout Chicago. Advanced singers from the Neighborhood Choir Programs and from Voice of Chicago served as role models for younger singers in the Choir’s sixty in-school programs at events such as the Target Community Concert Series and the choir-wide annual Paint the Town Red at Millennium Park. These concerts were instrumental in establishing collaborations and friendships across choir levels as singers rehearse together and share their experiences. As the Choir expands its social vision to a global scale, we remain committed to nurturing our longstanding partnerships with Chicago’s finest cultural institutions and to providing opportunities for singers to tour the United States. In October 2012, our singers performed in Chicago Symphony Orchestra's production of Orff’s Carmina Burana, under Maestro Riccardo Muti, at Carnegie Hall, and in the Lyric Opera’s production of Puccini’s La Bohème in February 2013. During the Choir’s annual Bridging America Tours, singers from the Neighborhood Choir Program showcased our multicultural repertoire during a local Chicago tour, as well as in Kalamazoo, Nashville, Minneapolis, and San Francisco. As you make your way through this annual report, I hope that you will let the voices of our children inspire you. On behalf of these hopeful young singers, we thank you for making all this possible with your support, and we invite you to continue reimagining the world with us.
