CHARLES BORROMEO PARISH FAMILY December 28, 2014 God’s Family and Our Family Matthew and Luke conclude their account of Jesus’ birth in dramatically different ways, yet each emphasizes a common theme. In Matthew’s Gospel, Herod sends soldiers to find and kill Jesus. Joseph, Mary and Jesus flee to Egypt and only return after Herod’s death. There are many parallels here to the story of Moses. Luke, on the other hand, has the Holy Family going up to Jerusalem, there to be greeted by Simeon and Anna. This story is similar to that of Hannah presenting her son, Samuel at the shrine of Shiloh where the priest Eli accepted him. (1 Sm 1:2428). As Simeon takes Jesus into his arms he prophesizes that Jesus will be a sign of contradiction and that a sword will pierce his mother’s heart. Both Matthew and Luke, in different ways, indicate the opposition and suffering that is to come. Our family life has a great deal of influence on the way we live our own life. On this feast of the Holy Family it’s worth reflecting for a few moments on the family we grew up in and the family we live in today. Social scientists tell us that a person’s birth order, the stability of parent’s relationship and the relationship of parents to children has a significant impact on how a child grows to adulthood. Divorce, the use of drugs, including alcohol, the presence of parents at their children’s events and the attentiveness of parents to children, from reading to them to spending time with them, has a distinctive impact on one’s growth. There is no doubt that growing up in a loving stable family has many advantages. On the other hand, we know that those who come from dysfunctional families, e.g., the adult children of alcoholic parents, have to work extra hard to develop their sense of trust. The Way We Never Were is the title of a book. The author maintains that families consisting of two parents, children and grandparents living in peace and harmony have always been in the minority. And at any given period of history there have been more blended families, adopted children, single parents, etc. than two parent families with biological children. When we look carefully at the Holy Family we see that they did not meet the criteria of what is sometimes considered to be the ideal family. Mary conceived Jesus out of wedlock; Joseph was Jesus’ stepfather; during his career, Mary and his extended family thought that Jesus had lost his mind and they tried to take him away; and Jesus died as a common criminal. Jesus taught that being a descendent of Abraham and Sara did not automatically make people God’s children, rather it is the effort to live according to God’s Way of Life that counts. The make up of our childhood family and the make up of our current family is important. We are both scarred and healed by the quality of our relationships. If we have been hurt or wounded by our family life, then we need to attend to those hurts and wounds. One of the ways we can help and heal one another is to remember that we are members of God’s family. Discussion and family prayer are two ways to help each member of our families remember that they belong to God’s family. I encourage parents to pray together and with their children. Certainly morning and evening prayers and grace before meals should be part of every household. I encourage families to consider these additional ways of praying together. Parents can read the great stories of the Bible to their children from Children’s Bibles. Read over the upcoming Sunday’s Readings and spend some time sharing your reflections on these readings. Pray the Rosary together. Parents can bless their children and one another. Celebrate the different Liturgical Seasons in an appropriate way, e.g. by talking about the upcoming feast, wonderful gift of Mary in our lives (Jan 1), the signficance of the Epiphany (Jan 4) and the importance of our own Baptism as we celebrate the Lord’s Baptism (Jan 11). 2 EVENTS FOR THE WEEK ST. Mr. Dan Hill, Principal Dear St. Charles Borromeo Parishioners, The students and staff are off for Christmas Break, hopefully spending time with their families and loved ones, and celebrating all that is good about Christmas. One of my favorite music teachers, and nuns, of all time was Sister Janet. She never put her Christmas tree up until Christmas Eve every year, and would leave it up until the Feast of the Epiphany. She always seemed to have the best of the Christmas spirit, and never do I remember her talking about shopping or traffic or money. She truly celebrated the season of Christmas as a way to be grateful for the blessings she was given. I hope your families find the same kind of happiness this year. Thank you for your support, and Happy New Year! Sincerely, Mr. Hill Planning Your Giving: With the stock market at record levels, this may be the time to fulfill your parish and/or school support or your Annual Catholic Appeal pledge with appreciated securities instead of cash. There are significant tax savings for doing this. For instance, if you have owned the security for more than one year, you can deduct the current fair market value of the security instead of your basis. So, if you bought a security for $10 a share and it is now worth $100 per share, you get to deduct the $100. And, you pay no tax on the $90 capital gain. To see how you can benefit from this, contact Kim Heggerness, the Director of Development, at 564-3185 ext. 3030 or kheggerness@stcharlesb.org. Your gift can support the parish or school. Also, talk to her about the tax advantages of making a gift from an IRA. Upper Room Prayer Group Here is the list of our scheduled meetings during the holidays: Tuesday, December 30. No meeting the week of Christmas. We resume our regular Thursday meetings on January 8. All meetings are in the convent chapel and begin at 7 pm. The St. Charles Borromeo School’s Annual Fund is an essential part of funding for our school. It was created to help bridge the gap between our tuition, and the actual cost of educating a child. The benefits of the Annual Fund are twofold: we are able to reduce tuition for families who may have difficulty paying for a quality Catholic education and offset annual tuition increases for EVERY family. Remember...Your donation is 100% tax deductible. With your help, we can continue our tradition of being one of the highest performing and affordable Catholic Schools in the area. Please contact the school Development Office to make a donation: 253-564-5185 ext. 3040. 5 SOCIAL JUSTICE ST.
