FROM our PASTOR
ST. CHARLES BORROMEO PARISH FAMILY
February 22, 2015
The Mass is all about change or transformation.
We celebrate the change of the bread and wine so that Christ is truly present. We use “Body and
Blood, Soul and Divinity” to express our belief that Christ is present fully Divine and fully Human.
And we use the philosophical word Transubstantiation to say that there is a change in the very substance of the
bread and wine but not in their appearance. This takes place during the celebration of the Mass or more properly
the Eucharist which means to Give Thanks.
The third Eucharistic Prayer states most clearly the change that is to take place in us: “Grant that we who are
nourished by the Body and Blood of your Son and filled with his Holy Spirit may become one body, one Spirit
in Christ.” To live with the mind, heart and hands of Christ requires transformation on our part.
According to Matthew and Mark, Jesus began his public ministry by saying, “Repent for the Kingdom of God is
at hand”. (Matt 4:17 & Mk 1:15) These words mean, “Change the way you think, speak and act (repent) for
there is a new way of living, God’s way (the Kingdom of God).
We change our life when, as St. Paul said in his letter to the Philippians, we have among us the same mind that
is ours in Christ Jesus,
“who though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped.
Rather he emptied himself taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness, and found human
in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross.
Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bend of those in heaven and on earth and under the
earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Phil 2:511)
The process of transformation occurs as one (1) accepts one’s humanity with its various limitations, (2) shares
one’s gifts of time, talent and treasure with others in love and (3) ultimately, peacefully entrusts one’s life to God
as Jesus did.
As we read The Living the Mass this Lent we’ll focus on how our participation gradually changes us
so that we live with the mind, heart and hands of the Risen Christ.

Teen Nights
A huge thank you to all of you who
turned out to last week’s Teen Night! It
was a blessing to see so many of you there
and to know that we are building a bigger
and tighter community here at St.
Charles. We had loads of games, balloons
and ice-cream floats. Not to mention some
skits and real-talk. Of course, there is Teen
Night tonight — February 22 — and then
we will gather again on March 1. Feel free
to invite someone new!
If you have never come and are interested,
join us! There’s no better time than the
present!
Check out the RE Online at: Saintcharlesb.weebly.com.
Recently, Grand Knight Rich Rewolinski
presented a check for $1,600.00 to
Pastoral Assistant Kim Seevers to be used
for the St. Charles Food Bank. After the
Oktoberfest, the Food Bank received a
check for $3,400.00, so for this fraternal
year the Food Bank received a total of
$5,000.00. The K of C Supreme Council
gives a rebate of $100.00 for every
$1,000.00 donated to a food bank. This
means the Food Bank will receive another
$500.00 later this year. Thank you
Knights!

Lent
Let’s be joyous this Lent! We are
preparing room for God to be an even
bigger part of our lives and what a blessing
that is! Feel free to follow the Lenten
reflections on our YouTube channel or
Facebook page and join us at Teen Night
to carry out our goal of drawing closer to
Christ. Hey, you may even want to make it
part of your Lenten observance.
Prayer
Almighty and everlasting God, you have
given the human race Jesus Christ our
savior as a model of humility. He fulfilled
your will by becoming man and giving his
life on the cross. Help us to bear witness
to you by following his example of
suffering and make us worthy to share in
his resurrection. We ask this through our
lord Jesus Christ, your son.
Amen.

Putting Our Faith Into Action:
The Washington State Catholic Conference (WSCC) is the public policy voice of the
Catholic Bishops of Washington State and reports:
CATHOLIC ADVOCACY DAY MARCH 26, 2015 9:00a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
As part of St. Charles Parish, we see every day how public policies affect the needs of
people in our own community. Our knowledge of these concrete needs can be of
great assistance to legislators. Our Catholic voices joined together as a DIALOGUE
FOR JUSTICE parish creates a powerful force to influence our elected officials to
make policies and decisions that reflect our Catholic values. You are invited to join
your fellow parishioners and hundreds of Catholic advocates from across the state for
Catholic Advocacy Day, Thursday, March 26.
Please register by March 5th by calling 206-223-1138 or at www.jpjc.org. Your early
registration helps ensure you get a meeting with your legislators and a spot on a CAD
bus from St. Michael’s Parish to the state capitol campus. Catholic Advocacy Day is
sponsored by: The Archdiocese of Seattle, Intercommunity Peace & Justice Center,
Washington State Catholic Conference, Catholic Community Services, Catholic
Housing Services, Pierce County Deanery and St. Vincent de Paul Society.
The St. Charles Borromeo School’s Annual Fund is an essential part of funding for
our school. It was created to help bridge the gap between our tuition, and the actual
cost of educating a child. The benefits of the Annual Fund are twofold: we are able to
reduce tuition for families who may have difficulty paying for a quality Catholic
education and offset annual tuition increases for EVERY family. Remember...Your
donation is 100% tax deductible. With your help, we can continue our tradition of
being one of the highest performing and affordable Catholic Schools in the area. Please
contact the school Development Office to make a donation: 253-564-5185 ext. 3040.

Mr. Dan Hill, Principal
Dear St. Charles Parishioners,
The church was packed for the
9:00 Ash Wednesday service which
our students and staff attended. I
love all of the Masses that we
attend at St. Charles, but this
particular service seemed extra
special to me. When I placed the
ashes on the foreheads of the
faithful, there was a reverence and
true spirit amongst the kids and
adults, and we could feel the
presence of Jesus. There were so
many people there that we all just
sat together and made room for
each other and it was nice. Being
able to go to Mass is one of the
most important and special things
that we have. I hope you will keep
all of us at the school in your
prayers this Lenten season.
Sincerely, Mr. Hill
Please keep the following
in your daily prayers
for healing:
Holly Weller, Mary Jayne Colbo
and Joseph Rusinko
In addition please pray for our
family members deployed overseas:
First Lieutenant Alex J. Pfannenstiel
Specialist Niall Brady

RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY
40 Days for Life: The Lenten 40 Days for
Life campaign kicks off this week. During
this campaign we will again be witnessing
in front of Cedar River Abortion Clinic at
1401 Martin Luther King Jr. Way. You
can sign-up for a vigil time by contacting
Robbie Steen at 253-564-7759.
40 Days Mass for Life: The annual 40
Days for Life Mass will be celebrated on
Tuesday, February 24 @ 7 p.m. at
Visitation Catholic Church, 3314 S. 58th
St., Tacoma. Mass will be preceded by
adoration from 4-6:45 p.m. with the
praying of the Rosary @ 6:20 p.m.
followed by Benediction at 6:45 p.m.
Spiritual Adoption: We are now
completing the first month of our
Spiritual Adoption ministry. Here is an
update on your spiritually adopted
infant’s development:
Your infant, now just ¼ of an inch long, has
been quite active. Already your baby is 10,000
times bigger than at conception and has
developed the foundations of her brain, spinal
cord and nervous system. Her or his heart
began to beat 18-21 days after conception and
is pumping blood through her or his own
circulatory system. Your baby’s blood type can
be different from her mother’s.
Remember to pray the daily prayer for
your spiritually adopted baby and her or
his parents and the circumstances that are
driving them to consider abortion:
Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I
beg you to spare the life of the unborn baby
that I have spiritually adopted who is in
danger of abortion.
