FROM our PASTOR
ST. CHARLES BORROMEO PARISH FAMILY
March 15, 2015
LIVING THE MASS: How One Hour a Week Can Change Your Life
The word Mass comes from the Latin phrase, “Ite, Missa est”, meaning, “Go you are sent.” Now live as his disciple, with
his mind, heart and hands.
The Our Father gives us a frame work for understanding what this means.
The first three petitions of the Our Father help us understand the Mind of Christ. It is to have
 God’s name be praised (hallowed),
 God’s kingdom or God’s way of Life, the way of Agape Love, come, and
 God’s will be done.
The next two petitions help us understand the Heart of Christ.
 Give us our daily bread.
The One whom Jesus calls “Father” is far more wonderful and loving than any earthly Father. Because God is so good, Jesus’
heart is full of gratitude and he invites us, as his friends, to live with an abiding sense of gratitude.
 Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
Fr. Rolheiser says that the litmus test of the mature disciple is to be able to “forgive one’s enemies”.
Forgiveness of one’s enemies is one of the highest forms of love.
The heart of Christ is one of gratitude and love.
The last two petitions help us understand the Hands of Christ.
 Leads us not into temptation.
Just as we ask God to preserve us from temptation, so we too are to help others turn away from all that is wrong and do good.
 Deliver us from evil.
Perhaps the more accurate translation is “Deliver us from the test”. When we provide a home for the homeless, food for the
hungry, a way out for those caught in sex trafficking, we are preserving them from the test.
The Our Father is like a treasure buried in a field or a pearl of great price. If we are willing to ponder it we will find all we need to
live life to the full, for it is the summary of the Gospel, the Good News of God’s love that come from Jesus Christ.
Praying the Our Father is one way we come to understand and begin to live with the Mind, Heart and Hands of Jesus. By reflecting on
the petitions of the Our Father we come to a more mature understanding of what it means to be a disciple.

Speed Faithing!
You’ve heard of Speed Dating, right? Well
this is not that! But it’s a similar concept.
This month, March 22, at 6:30 p.m. in
Feist Hall, will be a very special event that
should be a lot of fun for everyone of all
ages. The best way to actually have and
enjoy the lifelong benefit of a vibrant faith
is to have people you care about with
whom you can share your faith. But,
perhaps you don’t know how to ask the
teen in the pew next to you why they
believe in God — or the grandparent how
they see God in other people — or the
person who lost a loved one why they
think bad things happen to good people if
there is a God. Now’s your chance in a
fun, lively and intergenerational event.
Quick groupings, rotating around with
question cards at each table mean there
will not be a dull
moment. Refreshments
provided. Please mark
your calendar and find
out more on our flyer
in this bulletin!
Serra Club of Tacoma-Pierce County will
meet at St. Patrick’s on Wednesday, March
18. Mass at 6:00 p.m. followed by dinner.

Teen Nights
March 15 the Teens Program leaders are
gathering for a retreat, Mass and celebration dinner. There will be no Teen Night.
We gather at the regular time on March
22. March 29, there will be no regular
Teen Night as we will instead have a
reunion for this year’s newly Confirmed
who attended the Confirmation retreat.
Confirmation Retreat reunion
What it is? An opportunity to:
• Reconnect with your small group,
• See all the retreatants again,
• Share how the past few months have
gone,
• Give insights into how God has worked
in your lives since the retreat,
• Get a gift from your small group leaders.
When it is?
Sunday, March 29, 2015 from 6:45 p.m.
to 8:15 p.m. (in place of the regularly
scheduled Teen Night)
Join us for Mass beforehand if you’d like
(wouldn’t it be awesome if we could get all
the retreatants to sit together on the left
side at the 5:30 p.m. Mass?)
Lent
Let’s be joyous this Lent! We are
preparing room for God to be an even
bigger part of our lives and what a blessing
that is! Feel free to follow the Lenten
reflections on our YouTube channel or
Facebook page and join us at Teen Night
to carry out our goal of drawing closer to
Christ. Hey, you may even want to make it
part of your Lenten observance.

We journey with CRS Rice Bowl to Lebanon to be present to a people who themselves

Mr. Dan Hill, Principal
Dear St. Charles Parishioners,
Thank you to those of you who came over
to Feist Hall for dinner and the carnival
last Saturday! The event was very
successful and as I mentioned in the
school bulletin this week, everywhere I
looked....everyone was smiling. Bingo
Night is Saturday the 14th, and that is
another fun event that is family friendly
and full of smiles (I get to crack a few jokes
as the Bingo caller, and Father Mike will
be the special guest caller again).
The school bulletin boards are full of neat
Lenten activities, art, writing, and other
symbols of our Catholic faith. Some days,
without telling anyone, I just walk down
the elementary hall and read everything
that is on the bulletin boards. Inevitably,
by the time I reach the end of the hallway,
I realize how lucky I am to get to see these
kids grow up, right before my eyes. Their
work is always amazing, and their teachers
ability to get the creativity out of them is
even more impressive. We have such a
wonderful school, and I truly thank you
for your support.
Have a great weekend and week ahead!
Sincerely, Mr. Hill

Please join hundreds going to Catholic Advocacy Day, Thursday, March 26, 2015 in

The St. Charles Borromeo School’s Annual Fund is an essential part of funding for
our school. It was created to help bridge the gap between our tuition, and the actual
cost of educating a child. The benefits of the Annual Fund are twofold: we are able to
reduce tuition for families who may have difficulty paying for a quality Catholic
education and offset annual tuition increases for EVERY family. Remember...Your
donation is 100% tax deductible. With your help, we can continue our tradition of
being one of the highest performing and affordable Catholic Schools in the area. Please
contact the school Development Office to make a donation: 253-564-5185 ext. 3040.

What is the Retrouvaille program? Retrouvaille is a community of disciples committed to helping hurting couples heal
their marriages. The Retrouvaille program offers couples the opportunity to rediscover each other and examine their lives
in a new and positive way. No matter what is causing the hurt, couples can find healing. Retrouvaille is Catholic in origin
and supported by the Seattle Archdiocese.
Who is it for? It is for couples with strained marriages, including those in the initial stages of distress, as well as those in a
state of hopelessness and considering divorce. While many attendees are Catholic, married couples of all faiths are
welcome.
Make Your Marriage a Priority this Lenten Season: It’s not too late to focus on something positive this Lent -- making your
marriage everything God intended it to be. Retrouvaille (pronounced retro-vī) can help you rediscover your spouse and
move forward in a more positive and loving way. For confidential information about, or to register for our upcoming
program beginning April 24-26, 2015 call 206-706-2608 or visit our website at www.HelpOurMarriage.com.

Still not sure what Speed Faithing is?
It’s easy! You get to sit around a table, filled with food and friends. You get assigned a partner. You’re spaced out so that you
can’t hear what other groups are saying. You get cards that have basic
questions like those on this page. You and your partner have a set amount
of time to share.
What is your favorite
family tradition?
Describe your ideal
church experience.
What does being
Catholic mean to you?
What school do/did
you attend? How did
you share your faith
there?

The cool thing about Speed Faithing is you get to meet
fellow parishioners of all ages and share a brief but
meaningful conversation. Our hope is that you get to
make new friends and find a deeper appreciation for
the people with whom you worship God!
