~The World Meeting of Families ~
September 22 - 27 2015
In Philadelphia!
God and Father of us all,
in Jesus, Your Son and our Savior,
You have made us Your sons and daughters
in the family of the Church.
May Your grace and love help our families
in every part of the world be united to one another
in fidelity to the Gospel.
May the example of the Holy Family,
with the aid of Your Holy Spirit,
guide all families, especially those most troubled,
to be homes of communion and prayer
and to always seek Your truth and live in Your love.
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us!
Our Parish Prayer of Unity
Heavenly Father,
You call us to be Your faith-filled people,
United in the Sacred Heart
of Your Son.
Grant us the grace to always respond to
Your call with lives of
active faith, firm hope and Christian charity.
Aided by the example of Saint Augustine,
may we always seek to embrace and love
the teachings of Your Church.
Accompanied by Our Lady of Mount Carmel,
may we, in joyful times and in times of Sorrow,
always strive to be faithful followers of Your Son,
Jesus Christ,
for He lives and reigns with You,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
One God, forever and ever!
Amen!

Dear Friends,
On Saturday evening, January 3rd, our Parish hosted our first
Christmas Appreciation Dinner to thank our parishioners who go ‘above
and beyond the call’ through their support to our Parish in our many
ministries and services. For those who were able to join us, a great time was
had by all! Our celebration took place in The Empress Room of Saint
Helena Parish in Blue Bell – a beautiful setting for our party.
I am grateful to the members of our Christmas Appreciation Party Committee who organized and helped
make the evening a delightful and joyful celebration: Bernie Gutkowski, Joan Koeck Andy Moletzsky,
Pat Moletzsky, Denise Valerio and Joe Valerio.
For those who were not able to join us, I share with you some pictures from the evening. Hopefully, as this
new Parish tradition grows, many more parishioners who serve our Parish and parishioners in different ministries,
services and ways, will join us for the celebration. (Many thanks to Pat Moletzsky for sharing her pictures with our
Parish!)
Through the intercession of Saint Augustine and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, may we always be United in
the Sacred Heart of Jesus!

Our Parish Mass Book is Open
We are now accepting Mass intentions for Masses
celebrated from January 1st, 2015 thru June 30th,
2015. If you would like to have a Mass celebrated
in thanksgiving, for a special request, for the
intentions of another person (both living or
deceased) such as on a birthday, a wedding
anniversary, an illness or, as is most common, for
the repose of the soul of someone who has died,
please come into the parish rectory, or call the
rectory at 610-275-1750 with your request. A
$15.00 donation is requested for each Mass
intention. (One must never forget the infinite graces
that flow from the Sacrifice of the Mass which benefit ones soul. Pope Leo XIII in his encyclical
"Mirae caritatis" (1902) beautifully elaborated this
point and emphasized the connection between the
communion of saints with the Mass)

In order to help us prepare for the World Meeting of Families and
the visit of Pope Francis, a catechism on family life entitled, Love is
Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive, has been prepared. Each
month, our parish is reflecting on one chapter from this catechism. For
previous months’ reflections, visit: PhillyEvang.org/wmof. You can
order a copy of the catechism at WorldMeeting2015.org.
January 2015: Chapter 3: The Meaning of Human Sexuality
“Love is Our Mission” because God created us for a reason: to
love us, and for us to love one another (Chapter 1). God’s covenant
with Israel and the Church reveals what God’s love is like: tender and
passionate, but also steadfast and sacrificial (Chapter 2). In Chapter 3,
we learn that the bodily, earthly world has spiritual significance.
Tangible things - sacramentals, acts of charity, sacred art and culture,
our liturgical feasts and fasts - have the capacity to reveal the glory of
God. Marriage, as one of the sacraments, reveals this to us in a special way. The bodies of the spouses, in the complementarity of their
masculinity and femininity, have the unique role of revealing God’s nature as a communion of life-giving love. How can a man and a woman
imitate God’s love together? How can they live in a way that is intimate
and committed, joyful and merciful, forgiving and fertile? Through their
participation in the life of the Church, this kind of love becomes possible. God’s love is not an audition, or a
temporary experiment, or a self-seeking negotiation. In the same way, marriage is never a private, inward
romance, but always discovers its true nature in relation to God and his wider purposes. A sacramental
marriage is called to be a little parable of God’s love, always ordered to joy and service. All Catholic sexual
ethics flow from these ideas. In our next chapter, we will reflect in depth on marriage, followed by the next
chapter about celibacy. –Dr. Christopher C. Roberts and Meghan Cokeley

Families through HomeStay. Learn more about this exciting way to help Philadelphia “welcome the world”

Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Baptism of Our
Lord. This brings to an end the season of Christmas. The Church
recalls Our Lord's second manifestation or epiphany which occurred
on the occasion of His baptism in the Jordan. Jesus descended into the
River to sanctify its waters and to give them the power to beget sons
of God. The event takes on the importance of a second creation in
which the entire Trinity intervenes.
Many of the incidents which accompanied Christ's baptism are
symbolical of what happened at our Baptism. At Christ's baptism the
Holy Spirit descended upon Him; at our Baptism the Trinity took its
abode in our soul. At His baptism Christ was proclaimed the "Beloved
Son" of the Father; at our Baptism we become the adopted sons of
God. At Christ's baptism the heavens were opened; at our Baptism
heaven was opened to us. At His baptism Jesus prayed; after our
Baptism we must pray to avoid actual sin.

FEAST OR FESTIVAL?
As all of us know, two of our former parishes
held summer social celebrations: Our Lady of
Mount Carmel's Grand Feast was held on the
second weekend of July and Sacred Heart's
Polish Festival was held on the fourth
weekend of July. As our Parish continues to
bring together important elements and
memorable events from our former parishes
into the life of our new Parish, we have to
decide how best to continue having a summer
social celebration to help foster unity in our
new Parish. Father O'Sullivan is inviting all
parishioners who would like to help continue
our extraordinary summer celebration to a
meeting on Monday, January 12, 2015
7:00PM in Sacred Heart School Hall to
discuss how we can move forward as a new
parish community. All parishioners are
welcome to join us at this meeting!
