January 11, 2015 The Baptism of the Lord The Steward The Light Shines All you who are thirsty, come to the water! -- Isaiah 55:1 By Nancy Feely, Head of Elementary School D December 8th, The Immaculate C Conception, was a day to remember aat St. Benedict Parish and Preparatory S School. The day began with a power o outage due to a down power line in the n neighborhood. As students filed into school while staff members lit the hallways with cell-phone flashlights, Fr. Jason and I talked about the status of the Immaculate Conception Mass that was set for 8:30am. With the candles from the Advent wreath (two candles at that point during Advent) we gathered in church for a candle-lit Mass. Just as Mr. Kiolbassa was to start us in song, a Capella, a sigh of relief and cheer came over us as the power was restored! The radiant happenings of that morning followed through the day. The eighth graders were set to help host the senior citizens in the neighborhood at the alderman luncheon scheduled to take place that afternoon in the school gym. In addition, a very special visit to our sharing parish and school, Our Lady of the Snows, was scheduled for that morning as well. Sometimes, when the day starts out in the dark, there are many breaks of light to shine through in different ways throughout the day. December 8th was that luminous day. A group of St. Benedict Preparatory School students, representing all students of St. Benedict Parish & Preparatory School had the light shine through them at their visit to Our Lady of the Snows. The group of SBPS students, represented Kindergarten through grade seven, rode on the small SBPS bus to the southwest side of the city. They were greeted by the principal and pastor, and the pastor’s dog (in the school office!) Each grade prepared a wreath made of cut-outs of students’ hands on green paper, arranged in a circle. Representatives from each grade introduced themselves to the same grade level of students at Our Lady of the Snows school, and exchanged hand-made greetings from each class. The group also delivered hand-made Christmas cards made by Religious Education students at St. Benedict for the Religious Education students at Our Lady of the Snows. After exchanging greetings in each grade and classroom, the students were given a tour of the church. In reflection with the group of students in attendance from SBPS, they were fulfilled and excited about the unique opportunity to build upon the sharing parish and school relationship with Our Lady of the Snows. Thoughts from the SBPS representatives about the visit to Our Lady of the Snows were…. “It was kind of cool. They had different desks (than our school,) but we have the same projectors.” – a 2nd grader “They have lockers, and a dog!”– a 5th grader “They have uniforms too.”– a 4th grader “ was nice to see their church, it “It w pretty. The church has different was s sections, like one section with Our Lady of Guadalupe, and another section for Polish (culture.)”– a 5th grader “It felt like we were doing something good for the school.” – a 5th grader “They have the same number of kids in a class, like 17 or 18, but we have more classes in a grade.”– a 4th grader “It felt good to represent my grade”– a 4th grader “It was great to see their smiles!”– a 4th grader We look forward to future meetings with our friends at our sharing parish and school, Our Lady of the Snows. The gleaming faces of the students after this experience was proof to me that the Lord made the light glisten through, even on such a day where it seemed that we wouldn’t see the light. Dear Family of Faith, As you have read, some St. Andrews parishioners, their Pastor, Fr. Sergio, some St. Benedict parishioners and myself are embarking on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in mid January. We will spend just over a week praying at the sacred sites of the three powerful Abrahamic religions, primarily our Catholic holy sites, but also our Jewish and Muslim brother and sister's holy sites. First, I ask for your prayers for our pilgrimage group of about 45. While I know that the areas we are going are safe, any travel carries some element of risk, so I ask for your prayers for a safe and prayerful pilgrimage and return trip. Second, I would like to carry your prayers with me. In the space provided below, please feel free to send me your prayer requests that I will deposit into the ancient Western Wall of the Jewish temple, as the tradition holds. I ask that you limit your prayer request to this space as I will be carrying them with me and then depositing them into the crevices of the Western Wall. Please drop off your prayer requests to me at the rectory or in the collection basket, no later than Jan 16th. It will be my honor to deliver these prayer requests when we get to the ancient city Jerusalem and visit the Holy Seplechre, the site of Jesus' crucifixion, burial and resurrection, and the Western wall. Please know that all of you will be with my in my prayers as we embark upon this pilgrimage. January 11, 2015 parish.stbenedict.com page 3 Events & Parish Life Hello fellow St. Benedict Parishioner, It is that time once again, book your sitters NOW and get ready for a fun night out with fellow parents and our lovely St. Benedict Prep administration and staff! St. Benedict Prep’s 14th Annual Ball & Auction, the biggest fundraiser of the year is coming to a new venue, Germania Place on Saturday, February 28, 2015. We are planning some very exciting live auction items and lots of fun silent auction items. But, we need your help! We are hoping to raise over $300,000 in much needed funds for our school! Don’t think you have anything to offer? Here are a few simple ideas: • Think about the neighborhood places you frequent, the ones where the owners know you, and the restaurants you love. Most of these businesses would love to help their best customers and would appreciate the exposure to other St. Benedict Prep parents. • Consider donating a weekend at your vacation home or timeshare or some of your airline miles, hotel points, car rental points. • Do you have season tickets to sporting events, theater, or concert venues? Please consider donating tickets to a game or show. • Are you a member at a golf club? Donate a tee time or ask your favorite pro to donate some lessons. • Do you have any famous friends or neighbors? Any relationships with a noteworthy athlete or chef or artist? Ask them to do a "behind the scenes” tour, provide an ultimate dining experience, or gain access to VIP tickets. All unique and original ideas are welcome and no donation is too small (or too big)! To donate, just fill out the attached form and return it to the Development Office at St. Benedict Prep by January 28, 2015. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Committee Members, Meggan Flom (megdonoghue@msn.com) or Anna Gallagher (annaboryc@yahoo.com). Thank you so much for all your support! We are looking forward to seeing you at My Fair Chicago, the 14th Annual Ball & Auction on February 28th at Germania Place! January -- Human Trafficking Awareness Month THE WOMEN'S CENTER 5116 North Cicero Avenue, Chicago, IL 60630 (773)794-1313 Illinois Women Religious Against Human Trafficking January 11 is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day. It is estimated that more than 20 million men, women and children around the world are victims of human trafficking. The United States is a source, transit and destination country for some of these men, women and children — both U.S. citizens and foreign nationals — who are subjected to the injustices of human trafficking, including forced labor, debt bondage, involuntary servitude, and sex trafficking. Prayer to End Human Trafficking Loving and compassionate God, we pray for the release of the millions of innocent children, teenagers, women and men who have been drawn into prostitution, sweatshops and domestic servitude by human trafficking. Increase our awareness of this terrible injustice. May the compassionate people who seek to help these victims be blessed in their efforts to free them from captivity and to provide safe shelters for them. We confidently ask all this in Jesus’ name. Amen. Action: Minimize opportunities for exploitation by supporting fair trade and anti-poverty programs. 2nd Collection - January 18th Build Our Future There will be a 2nd collection after communion for Latin America. Pleases be generous. January 11, 2015 How can I help? 1 Drop off non-perishables for the Common Food Pantry to the St. Benedict Shrine in Church every 3rd Sunday. Next collection: January 17 & 18. Donations of plastic bags are also needed! Drop off clothing to the St. Vincent de Paul 2 collection box, located in the courtyard. Drop off your paper to recycle in our ABITIBI 3 bins in the courtyard. There will be a 2nd collection after communion for our Parish Build Our Future Campaign. Proceeds from this collection will be used for Parish and School needs. 2nd Collection - January 25th Latin America January 22nd marks the 42nd anniversary of the legalization of abortion which has resulted in the death of nearly 58 million innocent, unborn babies in this country, one every 30 seconds. We can only estimate how many women have undergone tremendous suffering because of their abortions. The Women’s Center is a pregnancy resource center which has saved approximately 38,000 babies and their mothers from the pain of abortion in our 30 years of service. We offer them a choice other than abortion and provide counseling, material assistance and prayer support. 4 Make a gift from our parish to St. Vincent de Paul to help those in need. Donations can be left in the drop box safe, located near the Holy Family Shrine in Church. The sandwich program is in need of sandwiches, 5 snacks and drinks. Questions? This special council, met with Pope Francis to consider the joys and challenges of families in light of the Catholic faith. Anne-Marie Finger, a eucharistic minister at St. Ben’s, and the chair of the Archdiocese Women’s Committee (AWC), will lead the discussion on Tuesday, January 13th. She is inviting all women of St. Ben’s to review and discuss the issues that are of concern to us: the state of Catholic marriages, the challenges faced by divorced Catholics, how best to support broken and fragile families, the annulment process, sensitivity to homosexual individuals and a renewed focus on values that promote inclusiveness and respect for all families. The Archbishop will present our responses to his fellow bishops in October. Commemorative Hymnal Name Plates Our new hymnals have arrived! Please consider helping the parish offset the cost of the new books by purchasing a commemorative name plate.
