The second reading, taken from the First Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians, reminds us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. In the Gospel, John the Baptist directs two of his disciples to follow Jesus. January 18, 2015 SAVE THE DATE: “MARCH FOR LIFE” Thursday, January 22, 2015. In order to make the process easier for both you and the parish, we ask that you please utilize the following information when you fulfill your commitment. Pledge Payments Remittance statements are mailed the last week of every month. If you are sending payments on a different schedule than monthly, the remittance statement schedule is the same, but you’ll receive them when you selected — semi-annually, annually, etc. In order to assist Saint Kilian with the pledge payment process over the next five years, please wait for your reminder statement before sending any payments to To Build A Church, A Church Alive. Do not send payments directly to Saint Kilian. Pledges are centrally processed, and the Diocese sends the proceeds to Saint Kilian each quarter over the next five years via our parish’s Diocesan savings & loan account. If you need to make any changes to your pledge, or if there are any errors, please send the changes to: To Build A Church, A Church alive c/o Our Campaign for The Church Alive! PO Box 4 Pittsburgh, PA 15230 If you prefer to make your payments electronically (from a bank account or credit card) please visit the Faith Direct Website www.faithdirect.net where you can create an account or sign into your current account. Once on the main homepage of your account, click “Add an Organization,” then enter the code PA162 for the Diocese of Pittsburgh, not PA191 for Saint Kilian. Next, select Saint Kilian from the drop-down menu in order to have your payments apply to the To Build A Church, A Church Alive Campaign at Saint Kilian. The remaining steps will allow you to set up your payment schedule. Finally, you will need to link your payment to a major credit card or bank account of your choosing. Tax Letters Each year, tax letters will be sent from the Diocese for the preceding year of all pledge payments, note that these are separate from the information sent by Saint Kilian for your Offertory and Parish Share participation. Please direct any detailed tax questions to the Office of Stewardship: (412) 456-3085 or email ourchurchalive@diopitt.org. Most liturgists would recommend that the service music be changed at this point from the holiday settings so that the change of seasons might be more evident. But this section of Ordinary time is only 5 weeks long and then we begin Lent. So the music for our mass settings will remain the same until Ash Wednesday on Feb. 18th. Ordinary Time is called "ordinary" simply because the weeks are numbered. The Latin word ordinalis, which refers to numbers in a series, stems from the Latin word ordo, from which we get the English word order. Thus, Ordinary Time is in fact the ordered life of the Church. It's appropriate, therefore, that the Gospel for the Second Sunday of Ordinary Time (which is actually the first Sunday celebrated in Ordinary Time) always features either John the Baptist's acknowledgment of Christ as the Lamb of God or Christ's first miracle—the transformation of water into wine at the wedding at Cana. Thus for Catholics, Ordinary Time is the part of the year in which Christ, the Lamb of God, walks among us and transforms our lives. That's why there's nothing "ordinary" about Ordinary Time. Our various choirs can be heard at these liturgies coming up: Children’s Choir January 25th @ 10:30 a.m. Adult Choir January 18th January 25th February 1st February 8th @ @ @ @ 10:30 a.m. 12:15 p.m. 10:30 a.m. 10:30 a.m. If you would like more information regarding the Bell Choir, Children’s Choir or Adult Choir, please contact David Dreher 724-625-1665 x2113 or email ddreher@saintkilian.org. Sensitivity and care will be taken to provide confidentiality in prayer requests. Page Eight January 18, 2015 Physical Education In Physical Education the students in all grades have been participating in activities that require them working in pairs or small teams. The “Celtic Way” is being stressed when working with others to achieve a common goal. They are learning to value the capabilities of their teammates and partners above showcasing their own abilities. The students have done a great job adopting a team mentality. It is an amazing thing to witness the children showing compassion and respect to each other during these activities. The students in grades K thru 2 have begun to work together in team building games with rules. They are learning the qualities needed to be a good teammate. The have been using a variety of tag games to help them learn to work together. They are being receptive to their partners to get a positive result. This quarter has also brought back the parachute. The students did a wonderful job working together to make that parachute do amazing things. The 3-5 graders have been working in team sports with a lot of work with throwing and catching skills as they pertain to basketball and other sport activities. They are participating in activities where they must follow multiple directions and pay attention to what is going on in the activity so they know what skills to perform at which time. The students are enjoying the activities without having the pressure of winning or the thought of defeat. Teamwork and sportsmanship are a large part of the activities and lessons. The students demonstrate those character traits every class. The middle school has been not only utilizing teamwork and sportsmanship in a game type setting, they have also been using communication and cooperation to solve problems. One of the more memorable examples of this was when they were teamed up and asked to move mats across the gym without touching the floor. The students had to fall into certain roles to achieve success and they had to be open to suggestions from their teammates. The year is only half over and there is still so much more to come. I am proud of the progress the students have been making.
