FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
U
When my children were
small, I had the power all
mothers have to soothe
little cuts, scrapes, and
bruises with a single kiss.
Mother kisses, and the hurt
is lessened or disappears
altogether.
It worked wonders until
the day my daughter
burned her hand when she
touched a steam pot. With full confidence, she lifted
her fingers to be kissed—and then realized they still
hurt. Over and over she lifted them to my lips, and
over and over I kissed them until I finally admitted we
needed to try something else. Cold water and a wash
cloth eventually soothed the pain, and the limits of my
magic touch were suddenly apparent.
Jesus’ power is of a different magnitude. It’s evident
when he reads and preaches with authority (from the
Greek word exousia, which means “out of himself”—
as opposed to studying or having a title thrust on him).
It’s even more manifest when he simply rebukes a
demon and the demon leaves his human host—not
because he wants to, but because he knows true
authority when he sees and hears it. It’s no wonder
the people are astonished. They’ve never seen this kind
of immediate response. This is no mother’s kiss to heal
the little hurts of life, no magician pretending to have
power he doesn’t. This is the Son of God come to cast
out evil itself and open the Scriptures so the people can
hear God’s Word in a new and powerful way.
Today, let us turn to him to heal our wounds and
make us whole.

First Reading
Job 7:1-4, 6-7 (74B)
Job lamented his “months of misery and troubled
nights.” Coludhuman life on earth be no more than
drudgery? Shall he never see happiness again?
Second Reading
1 Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-23
By preaching the good news, Paul said, he willingly
made himself a slave to all in order to win them over.
He did everything for the sake of the good news.
Gospel
Mark 1:29-39
Jesus healed ill people and exorcised possessed people.
So many sought him that he had to seek out deserted
places for prayer and rest.
JESUS MUST CONTINUE TO PREACH AND HEAL
At the conclusion of the Gospel
we heard of the rapid
expansion of Jesus’s reputation
based on his healing of the man
with an unclean spirit. Next
week’s Gospel is another
passage about healing which
begins with the individual
healing of Simon’s mother-inlaw and then narrates the
healing of many in the entire
town. After doing this work,
Jesus prays alone in a deserted place, yet Simon and
others follow him, telling him that everyone is looking
for him. Jesus knows he must continue to preach and
heal, and so he goes forth from his short-lived place of
solitude.

FEAST OF SAINT BLASE ~ FEBRUARY 3RD
Blase is said to have been a bishop in
Armenia. We are told that he suffered
an extremely brutal martyrdom.
There is a very popular legend that
from his cave, lit by candles, he removed a fish bone
from the throat of a boy who was choking. This story
made him the patron for those who suffer from
afflictions of the throat.

Word of Life…
“It is not only a personal but a social
concern which we must all foster: a
concern to make unconditional
respect for human life the foundation of a renewed
society.”

no. 77) © 1995 Libreria Editrice Vaticana. Used with permission.
In honor of the Feast of Saint Blaise throats will be
blessed at all Masses this weekend.

THE FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
“Brothers and sisters: I should like you to be free of
anxieties.” – 1 Corinthians 7:32
How much anxiety do we bring upon ourselves by
constantly worrying about not having enough or
attaining more things? God won’t necessarily give you
everything you want, but He will provide everything
you need. Try this – use the word “pray” instead of the
word “worry” in the future.
We will be purchasing new altar
cloths and altar linens for use at Mass.
For a donation of $50.00, your name,
or that of a deceased loved one, will be
listed on a framed Memorial Scroll
which will be placed in Church. If you would like to
make a donation, contact Maureen Hennessy at the
Rectory, 201-997-0700, ext. 25.
