SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
U
When I started in
campus ministry, I
was fortunate to meet
a wonderful priest
who had worked with
college students for
many years. I watched him carefully on Sundays and
at student gatherings, picking up valuable information
about how to talk to students, conduct myself
professionally, and bring out the best in others
and in myself.
Over the years we worked together, I observed many
campus ministers—young and old, lay and ordained—
seeking him out for advice and counsel. I referred
more than a few. I also enjoyed our conversations and
nearly always left our meetings with more wisdom
than when I started.
I wonder what Andrew and the other disciples
thought when John called Jesus “the Lamb of God.”
Whatever it was, they must have seen in Jesus someone
who could answer their questions or give them
something they were lacking. Maybe they saw a person
their teacher admired and decided to seek his wisdom
for themselves.
Whatever it was, something compelled them to follow
Jesus, and Jesus’ own invitation to “come and see”
whetted their curiosity and desire even more.
Today we might call that the impulse of the Spirit,
who draws us to Christ even when we’re not sure why.
The challenge for us is to have the courage to follow
Jesus, ask where he’s staying, and walk with him even
if we can’t see where it will lead us.
Our desire to stay with the Lord is, in itself, our
comfort and our joy.

First Reading
Jonah 3:1-5, 10(68B)
Jonah told the Ninevites that God would destroy
Nineveh because of their wickedness. They repented.
God relented and did not destroy the city.
Second Reading
1 Corinthians 7:29-31
Paul warned the Corinthians of the shortness of time
because the world is passing away. They should,
therefore, conduct themselves accordingly.
Gospel
Mark 1:14-20
Jesus appeared in Galilee preaching the good news and
instructing the people: “This is the time of fulfillment.
The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in
the gospel.”
THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS AT HAND
Leave your job and family.
Follow Jesus, not alone, but with
others. Repent. Accept and live
the message that the kingdom of
God is at hand.
These are
summary statements of the call to
discipleship found in Mark. We, like the first disciples,
come after Jesus, believing that in him God’s kingdom
is present. This is the kingdom we proclaim to the
world by virtue of our Baptism and our repentance.

JANUARY IS POVERTY AWARENESS MONTH
STEWARDSHIP SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS
THE SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
“Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to
them, ‘What are you looking for?’” – John 1:38
What are you looking for? Are you wasting your time
looking for the material comforts of the world? Or, is
your heart longing for something deeper that can only
be found by spending time with God? Take time, each
day, in silence and ask the Lord what it is that He
wants you to do.
Word of Life…
“Even if the forces of darkness appear to
prevail, those who believe in God know
that evil and death do
not have the final say.”

Who lives in Poverty USA?
All those who make less than the Federal government’s
official poverty threshold. . . which for a family of four is
$23,850.00. People working at minimum wage, even
holding down several jobs. Seniors living on fixed incomes.
Wage earners suddenly out of work. Millions of families
everywhere from our cities to rural communities.
Poverty does not strike all demographics equally. For
example, in 2012, 13.6% of men lived in Poverty USA, but
16.3% of women. Along the same lines, the poverty rate for
married couples in 2012 was only 6.3%–but the poverty
rate for single-parent families with no wife present was up
to 16.4%, and for single-parent families with no husband
present over 30%. And though poverty is often perceived as
a problem of urban environments and inner cities, the
poverty rate in metropolitan areas (14.5%) is actually lower
than the poverty rate in rural areas (17.7%). In 2012, the
poverty rate for people living with a disability was 28.4%.
That’s 4.3 million people living—in poverty.

YEAR OF CONSECRATED LIFE: REJOICE!
Pope Francis proclaimed 2015 a Year of Consecrated Life,
starting on the First Sunday of Advent, the weekend of
November 29, 2014, and ending on February 2, 2016, the
World Day of Consecrated life.
The year also marks the 50th anniversary of Perfectae
Caritatis, a decree on religious life, and Lumen Gentium, the
Second Vatican Council’s constitution on the Church. Its
purpose, as stated by the Vatican is to “make a grateful
remembrance of the recent past” while embracing “the
future with hope."

IT’S NOT A PARADE
A “parade” is a celebration of
something good - a holiday or special
event. A “procession,” is a group of
people who walk together to honor
Christ, the Eucharist, Mary or one of
the saints. A “March” is a group of
people brought together to try to bring about change, or to
gather support for the protection of human rights. This year
on January 22nd, the anniversary of the Roe vs Wade
decision of the Supreme Court - hundreds of thousands of
people will gather in Washington, D.C. and will march in a
prayerful way to show respect for human life from the first
moment of conception until natural death.
We invite people of every faith and political party to join the
march. We hope by this march, to call attention to the
millions of unborn children who were aborted since the
Supreme Court’s illogical and infamous decision. We
mourn for the children who might have grown up to be
leaders in the government, science or education, had not
their lives been snuffed out before their birth. Perhaps the
sight of thousands of people - mothers and fathers, children
and college students - coming from many states at great
costs to themselves, on a cold winter day, will manifest to
the world our determination to continue marching until a
genuine respect for all human life becomes, once more, the
law of the land.
If you cannot go to Washington D.C. on January 22nd, at
least consider attending one of the many events taking place
in our area. There special Masses and Eucharist Adoration
planned not only in our parish, but through the Archdiocese
and at our neighbor and partner Our Lady of Mount Carmel
parish in Lyndhurst. The truth will be heard and eventually
good will triumph over evil!

HYGIENE AND COMMUNION FROM THE CUP
We heed the Lord’s command when we
receive from the Cup of Eternal
Salvation…take and drink!
Common sense should prevail, however.
Anyone who has an active respiratory
infection, i.e. cold or flu, or anyone with
any sore on their lips should refrain from using the
common communion cup. In addition, if you have the
above mentioned conditions, perhaps a friendly nod or
smile could take the place of a handshake during the
