James McBride vibrantly depicts his childhood in The Color of Water as he simultaneously uncovers the secrets of his mother's, while also addressing issues of race & antiSemitism. Lillian Hellman's Pentimento, demonstrates character development in memoir; each chapter is a character sketch of someone important in her life.
