instruments, and learn traditional
community dances.

Hear the peaceful sounds of the mbira (an African thumb piano) with Kevin
Nathaniel Hylton, founder of the Spririt Ensemble, a group that pioneered the
use of mbiras on the New York world music scene.
Penguin Young Readers Series: Laura Marx Fitzgerald
This program is organized by Cumbe: Center for African and Diasporan Dance. The Cultural
Connections Performance series is supported by the Tiger Baron Foundation.
Come meet Laura Marx Fitzgerald, author of Under the Egg, as she reads from
her book and shares the stories that inspired it.
Cultural Connections:
Max ZT and the
Hammered Dulcimer
Lauded as the Jimi Hendrix of
the Hammered Dulcimer by NPR,
Max ZT is an innovator of the
instrument. Rooted in classical
Irish folk music, he is also inspired
by the traditions of Senegal
and India. The Cultural Connections
Performance series is supported by the
Tiger Baron Foundation.

Please join Nandi Miley Collymore, the author and illustrator of Tina Ballerina
and Friends Rhyming Book and listen to the rhyming journey of Tina and her
friends as they play and have fun in the sun. Then create a popsicle stick
puppet of your favorite character from the book.

Standing with her torch held high, Lady Liberty has been lighting the way
for millions of people coming to New York. Celebrate America’s birthday by

D.I.Y. Summer Crafting: Fans!
People all over the world use fans to keep cool in warm weather! Observe
beautifully designed fans from the Museum’s collection, then create a
