This class will look at works that exemplify the
various components of a memoir. James McBride
vibrantly depicts his childhood in The Color of Water
as he simultaneously uncovers the secrets of his
mother's, while also addressing issues of race & antiSemitism. Lillian Hellman's Pentimento, demonstrates
character development in memoir; each chapter is a
character sketch of someone important in her life.
Depiction of an historical moment is exemplified by
Joan Didion's, The White Album, a memoir chronicling
the events and issues of the late 1960s. Maxine Hong
Kinston's, The Woman Warrior, artistically explores
cultural roots and gender roles. The highlighting of
setting and location is masterfully created by Ernest
Hemingway in A Moveable Feast, a portrait of
expatriate writers & artists in 1920s Paris.
