From Our Rabbi - Rabbi David Siff
Shalom Haverim,
In the beginning of March, we will celebrate the holiday of Purim. One of the pivotal moments in the
book of Esther involves Esther considering whether to become involved in fighting Haman’s decree.
Mordechai’s response is “who knows if for just this reason you were made the queen.” Can we see the
opportunities God puts right in front of us, the opportunities to help each other, to bring some love and
healing into the world? Can we speak out, like Esther, in ways that challenge violence and hatred in
the world?
This year, we are trying something very exciting for our Purim celebration. We will be holding
an intergenerational megillah reading, involving the children in acting out the megillah as it is read (in
a combination of Hebrew & English). This will be followed by a festive Persian banquet; we will hold a more traditional, Hebrew
reading in the morning.
Mitzvot of Purim
There are four basic mitzvot that we are encouraged to do on purim:
1. Hearing the megillah—reading the megillah of Esther, in the evening and morning, in Hebrew or English. There’s lots of ways you can do it, but the best will be joining us here at NHS!
2. Seudah-a festive meal celebrating the occasion. It is customary to have a few l’chayyims.
3. Mishloach manot: giving gifts of food to our friends and neighbors.
4. Matanot Le-evyonim: we want to make sure that even those with bad fortune enjoy the day, so it is a mitzvah to give tzedakah directly to poor people on Purim.
In addition, it is really a day for festivity, so if you can, spend the day spreading holiday cheer.
Change in kitchen policy:
After my high holiday talk about the use of slaves
in chocolate production, a congregant approached
me and suggested we rethink what we serve here
at Northern Hills Synagogue. It is of course hard to
try to make one’s consumption entirely ethical, but I
believe that kashrut pushes us to do the best we can. In that vein, we will now using only slavefree chocolate, cage-free eggs, and recyclable or biodegradable plates and utensils. For those
of you who are interested in doing this yourselves, Costco chocolate (dairy) is slave-free, and
certain Trader Joes chocolate chips are pareve & slave-free.
Wishing you all the best, and stay
warm!

Hills Synagogue-Congregation B’Nai
Avraham is one of twelve organizations in Cincinnati participating
in the Create Your Jewish Legacy
(CYJL) partnership. Joe Lazear
chairs our CYJL committee. The
Board of our congregation approved participation in this program
and a status report was provided at
the December meeting. A considerable number of Board members
have submitted a non-binding Letter of Intent to provide a legacy gift.
You don’t have to be wealthy to
participate – a legacy commitment
of any size will help build our synagogue’s endowment and provide
vital resources for our future when
you are no longer here to support
us and other charitable organizations. This is the time to ensure
our collective Jewish future by
building a strong, secure and
permanent endowment for our
Synagogue. By completing a
nonbinding Letter of Intent to
leave an after-lifetime gift, you
can help us reach our goal and
secure a $10,000 grant for

members will be contacted

Message from Moreh Maksim
Let’s Talk About Faith
Ihasn thebeenlastinvolved
10 months my dad
with Partners
in Torah. Every Wednesday night
he studies with a young Russian
speaker. As part of their discussion
they go over weekly parshah, Pirkei
Avot, and Jewish ethics. One day
after he finished speaking to his hevrutah (Torah partner) he
gave me a call.
After several pleasantries, he asked a questioned that completely stopped me my tracks. The question was: “When you
left for college in Baltimore, did you wish for your mom and I to
have a conversation with you about faith?”
I was floored! I did not know how to respond to him. We never
studied Torah together, never prayed together outside of synagogue, and we never dwelled deeply with the matters of faith.
In fact, my parents never talked to me about
God.
As I was thinking on how to respond to his
question my dad changed the conversation to
discuss a Torah passage he just learned with
his hevrutah. When we hung up the phone,
I continued thinking about the question he
posed. I could not come-up with an answer.
Then something happened. I married my beautiful wife and then the answers came flooding
in. I thought about when I would become an abba (father in
Heb.) what conversations about faith would I have with my own
children someday.
I certainly would have wished for my parents to speak to me
about:
• Why does God care if I pray to Him three times daily?
• How can I show my love to God when I can’t see, touch, or hear Him?
• When my teachers and rabbis spoke about “Tikkun olam” what did it really mean? Did it mean for my life specifically, or only for the world at large? Was I selfish to think about “me”?
• If I question the narrative of the Torah, where does that leave me with the rest of my faith?
The problem is that conversations like these do not happen
naturally, probably because most of us never had deep faith
based discussions with our own parents. If we want our children to be proud of their faith, to affiliate with Jewish organization and to synagogue life, I challenge you to have deep faith
based discussions with your children.
Awkwardness will be the major challenge to overcome
when asking questions or discussing matters of faith. It can
be overcome when you realize that feeling awkward does not
mean you are not the right person for the job, on the contrary,
it is completely normal when you are doing something new or
something challenging. Once the awkwardness wears off you
will be able to parent with a single-minded vision.
page 10
How will you overcome your own
awkwardness?
Don’t be afraid to parent with a single-minded vision.
What I mean by this is to make sure that all conversations
pertaining to faith have a refrain. Make it known to your
children that there is nothing more important in life than to
grow in spiritual maturity. Pray out loud with your children at
home or a synagogue, when seeing something beautiful in
nature highlight that God has made it, and make sure that
all faith based discussion fall back to that refrain.
What refrain will you chose for your
family?
Know what you wish to
share with your children about Judaism. Most of you will struggle
to find meaningful faith based
conversation with your children.
Develop your own questions.
Concentrate on what you wished
you knew about Judaism before
you left home, what questions
you have always wanted to ask,
and what are you struggling with right now in regard to your
faith.
What faith based questions will you
ask?
As you form your questions don’t wait for comfortable
answers. Otherwise, a conversation will never come to fruition. The key to faith based dialogue with your children is to
allow them to simply start thinking about deeper questions
they otherwise would not have thought of. If both you and
the child can’t find the answer ask Rabbi Siff or myself for
an answer. The most important thing is to have a dialogue.
Finally, don’t get discouraged. Your children will react accordingly based on their age: they may be indifferent, annoyed, silent, or unwilling to talk. Keep on trying. Think back
to the time when you were a child and your parents were
trying to instill in you some values. I bet, if you were like
me, you response was “whatever!” or even an eye roll. Yet
as adults we realized that they planted within us seeds that
grew to maturity with age. Focus on what seeds you will be
planting and at the end they will grow into proud ETZ HAIM
deeply rooted in their Jewishness.
When will your start your own
conversation?
Happy Conversing, Moreh Maksim

Jewish Summer Camping
Jewish summer camping is one of the most important aspects of American Jewish life, and our
congregation and community offer several kinds of
assistance to families who want to take advantage
of this resource.
2. The community program makes grants for up to two years to any individual child. The Singerman Fund makes grants also to repeat campers beyond two years, subject to the availability of funds in
relation to the number of applicants.

Both the synagogue’s Singerman Fund and the

camps which are under the auspices of some
Jewish organization or institution. They differ in
some details:
1. The Singerman Fund makes grants only
for camps whose programs are consistent with the standards of Conversative
Judaism, while the community fund has a longer list of approved camps.

There are many fine Jewish summer camps from
which you can choose. We want to
give special mention to Camp Ramah,
the camping arm of the Conservative
movement. There are seven Ramah
Camps around the country, and Cincinnati kids
attend the camp in Wisconsin. Ramah offers a
first-rate camping experience and also a unique
experience in Jewish living. Information is available at the synagogue or at http://www.ramahwisconsin.com/

“The Island President lifts the issue of global warming out of the theoretical and into the personal. President
Mohamed Nasheed is trying to prevent 385,000 people from drowning. His nation of 1,200 low-lying islands,
the Maldives, is sinking into the Indian Ocean as sea levels rise due to global warming. Climate change experts
say that some of the islands will be submerged within 20 years, threatening the lives of the largely impoverished
inhabitants as well as inundating the lavish resorts that dot the islands. Nasheed’s unprecedented contingency
plan is to move his entire population to a new homeland. As he conducts serious discussions about this with Sri
Lanka and Australia, Nasheed is doing all he can to prevent this looming disaster by trying to convince world
leaders to halt global warming.”~ http://itvs.org/films/island-president

The NHS Gift Shop is affiliated with our Sisterhood. The Gift Shop is operated and maintained 100% by
volunteers fromSisterhood. The purpose of the Gift Shop is two-fold:
1.
2.
To provide our congregants and the community with a
selection of Judaica and generic merchandise of the highest quality at reasonable
prices in the convenient setting of our building.
To support NHS by contributing funds annually, through
Sisterhood, to the Synagogue’s Operating Budget.
In order for the Gift Shop to maintain its commitment to the synagogue we need the support of ALL OUR
MEMBERS. Perhaps many of our congregants have not yet visited us to see our OUTSTANDING offering
of variety. We invite everyone to visit the Gift Shop, check out all the ritual items, gifts for all occasions,
cards, candles and more. Then, come back and shop with us!! Complimentary gift wrapping is always
available upon request. If you cannot come in during our regular hours, just call the office to request an
appointment.
