ISSUE #12 MARCH - JUNE 2015 ART CRAFT DESIGN HOMEWARE HELLO Welcome to our Spring Season at The Biscuit Factory. Our spring exhibition is the first of the year and as a team we really look forward to launching this show with fresh collections and new artists. As an overview of what to expect, headlining this season is painter Basia Roszak with her whimsical portraits that capture small moments in time with a real dreamlike quality, Lizzie Rowe returns with a large selection of previously unseen still lives, Moy Mackay unveils a new selection of textile works in conjunction with the release of her latest book and we introduce ‘Visitors Choice Award’ a mixed group exhibition comprised of artists from the Scottish Spring Fling Open Studios. Alongside these collections we are proud to introduce amongst others, new artists to the gallery including former student of Slade Art School Jill Barthorpe with her effervescent oil paintings, quirky and idiosyncratic prints by Kate Boxer and Member of Royal British Society of Sculptors, Jo Taylor with her intricate sculptural forms. As well as new potters Emily Myers, Menear Ceramics and Trevor Lillistone joining our ceramics area in the gallery. As a growing cultural hub we have lots to share with you and so new for this issue we’ve split our magazine into two. The first half will continue to showcase our exhibitions and by flipping the magazine over you can now read all about our restaurant artisan, our cafe The Factory Kitchen, our new events space The Biscuit Room and other goings on from the gallery. Meeting and watching people has always been one of her great joys and painting them her passion. “Basia considers painting as telling a story without words. By leaving a degree of abstraction in her paintings however, she creates a curious and dreamlike atmosphere where the narrative may not be entirely clear and is left in part to the viewer’s imagination.” - Sam Knowles, Curator The Last Performers Oil on Canvas, 100 x 127cm, £3,000 How I Wish You Were Here Oil on Canvas, 60 x 76cm, £1,000 The Girls Night Out Oil on Canvas, 100 x 127cm, £4,000 Any News Oil on Canvas, 50 x 40cm, £600 Balloons Oil on Canvas, 70 x 50cm, £800 Mother and Child Mixed Media, 40 x 30cm, £500 View Basia’s full collection online - www.thebiscuitfactory.com Exhibition Preview: March 6th 2015, 6-9pm Apple Tree Oil on Canvas, 90 x 60cm, £1,500 2D COLLECTION This represents a mere selection of work we have on display in the gallery. During the 2014 event, visitors to Spring Fling were asked to vote for their favourite artists from each category. The winning artists appear here in this special exhibition ‘Visitors Choice Award’ featuring the work of Phil McMenemy, Heather Blanchard, Peter Wareing, Jarvis Furniture Makers and Little Dot Creations. Moy Mackay’s vibrantly coloured landscapes cannot help but draw the viewer in to their extraordinary worlds. As Moy gets ready to publish her second book, Flowers in Felt and Stitch, we are delighted to exhibit a beautiful range of both her landscapes and her lesser seen still lives. Packed with colour and style, the gorgeous and inspiring new book from the Scottish artist delves deep into the world of felt painting. The book includes an introduction to Moy’s use of colour and texture, as well as a section detailing what inspires her and how she forms these initial ideas into a composition. There are 4 easyto-follow but inspiring step-by-step projects, along with extensive galleries of Moy’s vibrant work, some of which can be seen in the gallery. Unlike the broad range of her previous book, the focus here is flowers – in still life, in the landscape and as botanical portraits – and the book includes an in-depth techniques section on creating a range of different flower and leaf shapes. The pursuit of his dream to become a wildlife documentary maker and presenter has taken him all over the UK and as far as Cambodia and Nepal. I believe that this Squirrel photograph will make a great gift. GENERAL MANAGER Rachel bROWN I’m really looking forward to seeing Peter’s work back in the gallery as part of Spring Fling Visitors Choice Award. His work stands out for me as it moves between classic figurative design, looser abstraction and textural decoration. Peter Wareing, Peacock Vase 1 Ceramic, 34cm Tall, £275 LAUREN BAKER SALES CONSULTANT Maria’s bold ceramic cups are mesmerising - the tension between the rounded vessel and its contrasting stage is endlessly satisfying, whilst the beautiful soft finish of the ceramic gives the fluid form a defined line. The two items together offer the viewer a calming sense of balance, whilst hinting at an impending chaos. Simeon zack Maria Wojdat, Cup & Stand Group, Ceramic, Tallest 16cm, £115 each MARKETING MANAGER EMMA SHARD I have to admit that I am absolutely rubbish at keeping plants alive! However, these charming ‘Hairy Babes’ plant pots by ceramicist Namiko Murakoshi are just the thing to pursuade me to keep those springtime plants as happy as the pots. Namiko Murakoshi, Hairy Babe Plant Pot Ceramic, From £30 3D Curator SALES CONSULTANT Like most of us at this time of year, I’m looking forward to creatures like the charming Mr Prickles bringing the scurry of life back to woodland and hedgerow. He’ll be out and about in the gallery too, along with Richard’s amiable prints of the birds and the bees of the season, on the wing and stirring for a busy Spring! My Spring choice is Emma Semple’s ‘Mirrored’. I really love this image as it has a dream like quality and gives you a glimpse into a spring scene. I like that Emma’s images challenge traditional forms of landscape painting. This particular image makes me think of sunlight, blue skies and lighter nights. Jenny is a London based jewellery designer, exploring exciting new techniques in jewellery making , and these silicone pieces also have a UV glow! Jenny Llewellyn, Necklaces Silicone & Oxidised Silver, £30 Each These spring scenes have an isolated beauty and in my opinion are some of the most awe-inspiring glass work I have ever come across. The combination of colour and texture creates an original take on traditional glass, using intense detail. The pieces themselves come into their own with a touch of natural light; illuminating the pieces and causing all sorts of refraction, creating a distinctive effect unlike anything else in the gallery.
