Most of us have also whacked our chests with our fists and called, aayoo, ayoo, ayoo, aaah! The spell of that character, raised by the apes but as moral as anyone raised by nuns, has stayed with us. We remember him for his superhuman strength and his ability to swing on vines through the jungle. He rights wrongs and is a friend to good animals. Or was that Kipling’s Jungle Boy? The fascination with humans raised by animals goes back to Roman times with the story of Romulus and Remus, raised by a wolf. Since Tarzan wound up with his family in the jungle as a result of a mutiny, in other words, due to man’s inhumanity to man, the story falls into a classic literary theme. The author of the original Tarzan story, Edgar Rice Burroughs, failed his exam to enter West Point, and it was later discovered that he had a heart problem. He married, he worked, eventually as a pencil sharpener salesman. He read pulp fiction and thought, “I can write stories just as rotten”. But he thought he could do a better job. Ray Bradbury, an outstanding American author maintained, “Burroughs is probably the most influential writer in the entire history of the world. By giving romance and adventure to a whole generation of boys, Burroughs Oh, the lure of the jungle! Give in. caused them to go out and decide to become special”. If Edgar had not had a heart problem, it’s unlikely that we’d have Tarzan, for girls as well. Eagle Butte school, Redcliff schools, Seven Persons School, and Irvine School are putting on the latest reincarnation of this timeless story. The schools are working together as a family, with elementary youngsters right up to graduates of Eagle Butte who have returned to help and take part in the fun. This community effort is reminiscent of the one-room school house plays great grandparents described. Scott Raible, director, mentions name after name of fantastic participants in this musical, and says that all of them, from the youngest to the oldest love the Phil Collins music. “Put your faith in what you most believe in” is a line that must tug at any beating heart. Shirley McClary, who teaches youngsters in Redcliff, has seen her pupils become students at Eagle Butte High School. Once again, a new crop of little persons join the seniors in this joint effort of the latest Tarzan musical. They play monkeys. While for some of them it is quite natural, most have to learn how to walk on their knuckles, to make monkey noises, and to make monkey faces. The older people help, and the choreographer, Amelia Phaff, makes sure that all actions and movements on the stage are just so. Amelia is turning out to be “fantastic in taking on an adult role,” says Shirley, who auditions the children from the feeder schools for this essentially high school production. As most of the children from feeder schools wind up in Eagle Butte, the participation in the musical is a boon. The transition from elementary to junior high is eased because the new students have been in the school in the musical, and they have worked with the older students. Alison Kapcala plays piano for these actors, but anyone who knows Alison knows that this is not all. She adapts and adjusts until the music is a perfect fit for the voices in the musical. Her history with helping children is long and greatly appreciated by all who have ever been fortunate enough to work with her. Anne Morrison is the musi- cal director who maintains that a venue for those with musical skill is of great importance in a school. She says that all of the Phil Collins music is suited to this school cast. The little ones get to play bongos, maracas, and shakers. Among the older ones there is a flautist, Rachel Hurley, a cellist, Riel Ellward, a guitarist, Shyloh-Dawn Bonogofski, and you will have to see the musical to see the remaining names. Tarzan, whom Anne Morrison calls “totally talented”, is Michael Christensen. He played the scarecrow last year, and this year he’s grown into the most robust and stalwart role ever – Tarzan. Shondie Jensen is Jane, and Amy Herrman is Kala. The task of creating all costumes is that of Laurel Klimaszewski. There are so many more wonderful, musical people contributing to this green show. It’s going to be a spectacular presentation. Conserving energy is one way to do just that. And in addition to saving money, conserving energy also helps save the planet. Though preserving energy around the house might sound difficult, it's actually quite easy, and you don't have to sacrifice comfort to conserve. The following are a few ways to conserve energy around the house and help your bottom line and the planet at the same time. • Cool it with the hot water. But many homeowners might not know just how simple it can be to reduce the costs of heating the water. You can trim between 3 to 5 percent off your utility bill for every 10 degrees you dial down the thermostat on your water heater. A water heater set in the range of 55°C won't require as much energy to heat and hold water as one set around 65°C or above, and a setting of 55°C is enough to prevent bacteria from growing within the tank and still provide water that's hot enough for a shower or bath. A water heater set around 55°C might also extend the life of the tank. That's because chemical reactions speed up in tanks that are hotter, accelerating the buildup of rust within the tank. Perhaps the simplest way to conserve energy around the house is to turn off the lights in empty rooms. It's easy for all residents of a home to turn on a light when entering a room, only to leave that room but keep the lights on. But electricity used for lighting can constitute as much as 10 percent of a monthly utility bill. Get in the habit of turning lights off whenever you leave a room. Though the savings here might not be substantial, turning off the lights will help conserve energy. In addition to turning off the lights, be sure to use compact fluorescent light bulbs, or CFLs, instead of traditional incandescent bulbs. CFLs consume less energy, don't give off nearly as much heat as incandescent bulbs and can last as long as 10,000 hours, which is roughly 10 times as long as the best incandescent bulb. • Make use of nature. Homeowners can also employ their landscape to help conserve energy around the house. A strategically planted tree, for example, can shade a room that is exposed to the sun throughout the day. That shade can make it cooler inside the home, allowing residents to stay cool inside without having to rely too heavily on their air conditioning unit. During the winter months, open the curtains during the day to allow sunshine in, naturally adding a few degrees to the home so you won't have to crank the temperature on the thermostat. Homeowners hoping to conserve energy around the house can do so in a number of ways without having to sacrifice comfort or luxury. Call Phil today at 403-529-7584 SAVE ON ENERGY COSTS! Being job smart means you know what it takes to do the job. You respect your employer, co-workers and customers and do your part to make your workplace a positive one. When you’re job smart you tend to feel more secure in your work. You won’t necessarily always have the same job, but you have the skills to keep a job and succeed at it. Holding on to a job and doing it well • boosts your confidence and gives you a sense of accomplishment • gives you a steady pay cheque • increases your chances for pay raises and promotions • lets you develop your skills and learn new ones • earns you a good reference from your employer when you change jobs To grow your job smart skills, bring your positive attitude to work and look for ways to exceed your employer’s expectations whenever you can. You’ll stand out for the right reasons and demonstrate your value to your employer. Here are some surefire ways to get started: Staying positive Develop a reputation for being an easy person to work with: • Be friendly, supportive and co-operative. Treat everyone as you would like to be treated. • Grow your communication skills. Give people your undivided attention when they’re speaking, avoid interrupting and make sure you understand what has been said before you respond. • Avoid gossip and discussions that you would not want repeated, especially criticizing your employer or coworkers. If you are asked for feedback, make it constructive and share it in a private setting. • Be flexible and open-minded. Realize that there are many ways to view a situation and people are entitled to their own opinions. • Stay relaxed, patient and polite. People respond more positively to respect than to sarcasm and anger. Thinking team Being a co-operative team member sets you up for success: • Support your team by completing your work as productively and effectively as you can. • Ask for help if you need it. Your team’s success depends on your performance. • Learn how to do some of your co-workers’ tasks. When the need arises, you can offer to fill in for them. • Get involved if you see an opportunity to help complete a project. Helping your co-workers and supervisor succeed at their jobs can be a good way to succeed at yours. Taking responsibility Taking responsibility for what you do and how you do it shows your employer that you’re reliable and trustworthy: • Dress appropriately for the job. Consider the type of work you’re doing, how your coworkers dress and the company image. • Look and act confident. Speak clearly and loudly enough to be heard. Look at people when they speak to you. • Use your time appropriately. Be on time for work. Avoid taking extra-long coffee breaks, looking after private business while you’re on the job, or spending too much time socializing. • Be productive. Keep your work area neat and clean. Plan ahead and do the most important tasks first. When you’ve finished one task, move on to the next without waiting to be told. Finish high priority work even if you must sometimes skip a break or stay past quitting time. • Let your employer know if you’re going to be late or absent, and use sick leave only when you’re sick. Setting standards Meeting or exceeding work standards, quotas and deadlines goes a long way toward earning you a reputation as a valued employee: • Do good quality work and an appropriate amount of it. Be a person who always gets things done, and done well. • Make sure you understand instructions and follow them precisely when you’re working on a new task. Ask your supervisor to check if you’re doing the task correctly. • Check your work before handing it over. Don't hesitate to do a job over if you think it might not be up to standard. • Be open to new ideas about how you can improve your work. Learn all you can from your co-workers and supervisor. Keep learning, both on and off the job. Bringing your “job smarts” with you to work will help you make the opportunities for you to most of every day on the succeed. ~alis.alberta.ca job, increase your job satisfaction and open up Help Wanted ASSISTANT PROPERTY MANAGER The Assistant Property Manager, under the direction of the Property Manager, is responsible for coordinating all aspects of apartment community operations and to act as main point of contact in the absence of the Property Manager.
