A MAN
AND
HIS MAP
By Barbara Watson
I’m going to go out on a limb
here, and I’ll find my way without a
map. That’s quite scary, really. I
might fall off the edge of the tree.
Which leads me to the point. Men
like maps. OK, some men like maps.
We could go into percentages here,
but that would be a stab in the dark.
Men, more than women, are likely
to be drawn to the study of maps.
There may be feedback here, but I’ll
stick to my guns. Perhaps my clichés
are indicative that my argument is
casual. Still I have seen men study
an atlas as today’s youth study
Facebook. There’s information in
these maps that they value. You can
keep a man entertained for hours
with a map. That’s been my experience, with a sedentary man, anyway. Here’s an example.
Keith Roth found a 1916 world
map, partly decayed, tacked onto
the wall of a barn somewhere near
Stettler. He rescued it and had it
preserved under glass and then
framed. He knew there was a story
there. The map appeared to be a
square and had a little calendar
attached to it for the year 1916. The
page showing was September,
although it, too, was partly torn and
the letters “ept” were missing. The
map was one of a series given by
Manufacturers Life to their customers, every year since its first year
in business, 1887. It’s a Mercator
projection – the most common flat
map.
My first classroom had such a
map. On the bottom were advertisements for Cadbury chocolate
bars. Maps have been used as

UPRIGHTS FROM
One puzzle is that Quebec is marked with a larger square than Ottawa
advertising since they could be
printed cheaply and because the
advertisers knew that these drawings of our world were of great
interest to many people, especially
men.
The man they say discovered
our continent, Christopher Columbus, thought he was heading for
and had discovered the fabulous
East, India, perhaps. He obviously
did not know how to read maps,
too arrogant. There is an argument
that he did have maps. The question is how could there be a map if
the place had not yet been discovered? You can read Gavin Menzies’
book 1421 to see some of his
thoughts on the subject, or The
Island of Seven Cities by Paul Chiasson. These men have spent a lot of
time on the subject of maps. They
claim that the Chinese, who had
actually discovered North America
before Columbus, created some of
the earliest maps used by European
explorers. Of course once an idea is
fixed in someone’s brain, it is next to
impossible to uproot it. The two
men above have been mocked for
their novel ideas, but their books
are worth reading. Of course the
Americans would have to change
the name of Columbus Day to the
Zheng He Day. You can check these
ideas, including the discrediting of
the books above, if you spend some
time on the Internet.
What is not in dispute is that
Europeans – most educated Europeans – knew that the world was
not flat. There were globes, which
must have been rare indeed, to
show how the world was shaped.
It’s probably not too difficult to
think that there were many people
around at the time for whom the
world would always remain flat and
for whom the sun revolved around
a stationary earth. The earth was

If there’s one day in the year
when even the most reticent
among us have to express a bit of
tenderness, it is definitely
Valentine’s Day. If you’re not sure
how to woo her the way she’d like,
just let the five senses be the
guide.
THIRD STEP-HEARING
Set the tone for the evening
by putting on some soft, romantic
tunes. Let your loved one know
how much you lover her. After all,
who could get tired of hearing
that?
FIRST STEP-EYESIGHT
To start the day off on the
right foot, there’s nothing like a
love letter or little message. It
doesn’t matter if it is given in
person, left in clear view on the
kitchen table, or sent by e-mail.
What it says is all that counts.
FORTH STEP-TASTE
Now comes the moment to
enjoy some special treats, starting
with a bottle of champagne.
accompany this divine nectar
with creamy chocolates or even
delicious red velvet cupcakes,
purchased at your favorite bakery
or made with love at home.
SECOND STEP- SMELL
Even if you think it’s a cliche,
don’t hesitate to offer a bouquet
to your loved one. Be sure to
choose flowers that will bewitch
her with their fragrance.
FIFTH STEP-TOUCH
To finish the evening on the
perfect note, think silky lingerie,
massage and essential oils or a
romantic bath for two. Sensual
pleasures, guaranteed!

Blue Cheese Dipping Sauce
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup buttermilk
1/4 cup Greek plain yogurt
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon worcestershire sauce
1/2 cup crumbled blue cheese
Salt and pepper, to taste
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 425ºF. Line a
baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. In a bowl, mix together the
cream cheese, cheddar cheese and
buffalo sauce. Stir in the shredded
chicken and green onions.
3. Unroll the pizza dough onto a
counter. Using a sharp knife or pizza
cutter, cut the dough into 8 strips.
Now take a rolling pin and, working
with one strip at a time, roll each strip
out into a rectangle (about 11x3 inches).
4. Spread about 1 1/2 tablespoons of the buffalo chicken filling
along the length of each strip. Starting with
the opposite side,
roll
the
dough up

Pinch the

and then very gently roll the dough
with your hands to form an even
cylinder that fully encloses the filling.
5.Take the two ends of each filled
cylinder and form into a circle that is
overlapped by a couple of inches of
dough on either side. Overlap the
two ends and lay over the opposite
side to form a pretzel shape, then
press to seal. Place the pretzel on the
prepared baking sheet. Repeat with
the remaining dough and filling.
6. Brush the tops of the pretzels
with the beaten egg and season liberally with sea salt. Bake for 15 to 18
minutes or until pretzels are golden
brown.
7. Meanwhile, make the dip. In a
bowl, mix together the mayo, buttermilk, Greek yogurt, lemon juice and
Worcestershire. Stir in the blue
cheese and season with salt and pepper.
8. Place dip into a dish to serve
with the hot baked pretzels. Enjoy!

How to make holiday travel less taxing
(MS) Though holiday travel
is rarely hassle-free, many travelers would no doubt admit that
enduring long lines at the airport
or heavily trafficked highways are
prices worth paying for the
chance to spend time with their
families come the holiday season.
But while there's no way for travelers to guarantee their flights
leave on time or the roads stay
clear of fellow drivers, there are
ways to make the holiday travel
less taxing.
• Prepare to wait. Check-in
lines and lines at security checkpoints tend to be especially long
during the holiday season. Travelers should prepare to wait at such
lines and leave their homes early
enough so they can still make
their flights without having to
rush through airports at the last
minute. If you normally leave
your home two hours before your
scheduled check-in, then leave an
hour earlier to account for traffic
en route to the airport and the
long lines once you get there. If
you make it through the security
checkpoint with plenty of time to
spare before your flight departs,
you can always unwind at an airport coffee shop or restaurant, but
arriving too late to the airport will
only add stress to an already
stressful situation.
Drivers also should prepare
to wait when traveling during the
holiday season. Roads will have
more drivers, so travelers should
build in traffic jams when estimating how long it might take for
them to arrive at their destinations. Sitting in traffic might still
be stressful, but it won't be as
stressful if you're still likely to
arrive to your destination on
time.
• Ship your gifts. Holiday
travelers often try to cram gifts
into their suitcases or the trunks
of their vehicles, reducing the
space they have to bring personal
items or stretch out in their cars
on road trips. Instead of squeezing as many gifts into your suitcase or vehicle as possible, ship
the gifts and travel light. Traveling
light can save you from having to
pay potentially costly baggage
fees at the airport, while drivers
will notice passengers tend to be a
lot more comfortable and relaxed
when they don't have to share
space with bags filled with gifts.
• Pack some distractions.
Whether you're waiting to board
at the gate or driving on a seemingly endless highway, pack some
distractions so you or your fellow
travelers aren't left with nothing
to do during delays. People traveling via airplane may want to
bring along a book or a tablet on
which they can play games or
watch television. Drivers may not
be able to take their eyes off the
roads, but they can pack books
and tablets or video game consoles for their passengers. Children may find delays or long trips
especially uncomfortable, so
adults should make sure kids
have things to keep them occupied during such excursions.

How to live as a
one-income family
(MS) Many couples wonder about the secret to surviving on one income when it seems like they're just making
ends meet with two incomes. Dual-income households,
which are now more common than single-income households, have become the norm.
With the rising cost of living, it may seem necessary
for families to generate two incomes. However, many
families still find a way to thrive on just one income.
Doing so often requires a careful examination of family
finances and a commitment to making changes to ensure
one income is enough for a family to thrive.
• Examine your spending habits. Having a clear picture of what is being spent each month will give you a
better picture of which things are necessities and which
are luxuries. Knowing how your money is being spent will
help you reestablish your priorities and map out a plan to
live on one income.
• Stay disciplined and organized. Some people
grow accustomed to taking out the credit card anytime
they want to make a purchase, oblivious to what they're
actually spending until the bill arrives.

Determine exactly what is
needed to cover bills each
month. Once you understand what's needed for
the home, figure out how
much you have left over.
Knowing what you have to
spend makes it much easier
to avoid overspending.
• Keep an emergency
stash. Many financial
experts recommend having enough in a savings
account to cover six
months' worth of living
expenses. This affords the
household breadwinner
enough time to find a new
source of income in case of
layoff and enough security
to pay bills in case of injury.
• Prepare ahead of
time, if possible. If you are
currently living with two
incomes, try living with one
income for several months
to a year and bank the
other salary entirely. This
helps to establish a sizeable
nest egg as a safety net
once you begin living on
just a single income.
• Speak with a tax
professional. In many
cases, moving to one
income will put you in a
lower tax bracket. An
accountant can give you a
clearer view of potential
savings.
• Trim the extras. If
you look at expenses, you
may find a number of trivial
things that can be cut from
your budget. You may be
able to save by bundling
certain products, such as
insurance policies.
After making a few
adjustments, many families
find that they can successfully live on just one
income.
