Donna Rae
We are very fortunate that our Rocky Mountains gets an
abundance of pristine snow, which melts into our South
Saskatchewan River. Unfortunately, by the time it arrives at
Medicine Hat, it is anything but appetizing. We do have a
good Water Plant here that cleans and chemicalizes our
water to make it safe. We also have water bottling facilities
here that sell reverse osmosis and distilled water that is
perfectly drinkable and safe.
Although we are getting safe drinking water, it could be
a lot healthier. Healthy water has a structure. Our bodies are
made up of mostly water, and if that water has a healthy
structure, we are healthy; if the water is denatured or
destructured, our health suffers. The work of Emoto who
took water from around the world and flash froze its
properties, revealed the difference in structure between
healthy water and unhealthy water.
I looked around for a place that we could get healthy
structured water that had not been chemicalized or
processed. The closest I found was the artesian well at
Reesor Ranch who filters the water and uses UV Ultraviolet
rays to kill off the harmful bacteria. So I phoned them in the
Cypress Hills (306) 662-3498 and asked if they would deliver
to Medicine Hat. At the moment they do have a depot in
Walsh (about 1/2 hr away), but don’t really have enough
people wanting their beautiful water in Medicine Hat yet.
If you want to have good healthy water that has not been
stripped and chemicalized, give them a call. You can pick up
the water in Walsh, but if enough people want it here, I’m
sure they would find a way to get it to us. Have I drank this
water? Yes, it is delicious.

There are times when people
wonder whether they are doing
something meaningful with their
lives. Our local grandmothers are
less concerned about that. They
know that giving help to those
urgently needing help is a high
calling. There is little that gives
them more satisfaction. Compassion for our fellow humans in
their suffering is essential to our
humanity.

TAX TIPS CAN HELP YOU SAVE!
Tax Tips For Canadians Over 65
www.shoppergroup.com
Income split and save: Seniors are allowed to split up to half
of their eligible pension income with a spouse or commonlaw partner. Income splitting allows some seniors to enjoy a
significant tax reduction. In the situation where the lowerincome spouse has very little income, the tax savings are
substantial.
Get your benefits: Any senior receiving Guaranteed Income
Supplement (GIS) through Old Age Security should file on
time to ensure their benefits continue uninterrupted.

Transfer amounts: If your spouse is unable to completely
offset his or her age amount, pension income and disability
amount against tax payable, he or she may transfer the
unused portion to your return.
Caregiver amount: If you live with your children and you are
over 65, they may be able to claim a caregiver amount for you
if your income is less than $20,002. If you are dependent on
them due to an infirmity, they may claim you even if. You are
under 65. In this case the income threshold will be $22,060.
The caregiver amount is increased by the $2,058 family
caregiver amount when the dependant is infirm.
Foreign pension income: Pensions from foreign countries
may be subject to special tax treatment under the terms of a
tax treaty. Always check with a tax professional to find out if
the pension you receive from a foreign source is taxable in
Canada.

New Tax breaks for Canadian families.
You could claim up to $2,000!*
**Availability and amounts will vary according to each family’s specific circumstances.

Split your CPP and save: You may be able to split part of
your CPP retirement benefits with your spouse depending on
how long you lived together when you were contributing to
the plan. This is an advantage if one senior is in a higher tax
bracket than the other. However, to do so, you must apply to
Human Resources & Social Development Canada using Form
ISP-1002. It cannot be done at the time of tax preparation.
Medical expenses can add up: If you purchase medical
insurance for a trip or wintering in another country, it is
considered a medical expense. Medical expenses are
calculated based on income so the lower income spouse
should claim them. And if you have to travel to obtain
medical treatment that was not available where you live, you
may be able to claim the cost of transportation, meals and
accommodation.

Avoid Workplace Traps
Don't let illness or injury
slow your travel plans
(BPT) - Whether heading to grandma's house
for the holidays or to a
tropical destination to get
away from the cold, winter
travel comes with the
added challenge of staying healthy.
Crowded airports and
train stations and tight
guest quarters make us all
more exposed to germs and this year's cold and flu
season is projected to be
among the worst yet.
Vacation illnesses or
injuries are not only inconvenient and expensive,
but often completely preventable. Follow these tips
to keep yourself and your
family healthy during this
year's winter adventures:
1. Pack a travel first
aid kit. You can purchase a
kit at a local pharmacy or
easily make your own.
Include essentials like
bandages, alcohol swabs,
hand sanitizer and overthe-counter treatments
for colds, allergies, aches
and pains, and indigestion.
2. Keep health information handy. Travel with
your health insurance card
and a good supply of any
prescription medication
your family will need
(bring a few extra for good
measure). As backup, snap
a photo of your prescription labels in case you
need a refill on the road.
Keep these important
items on your person
instead of packing them in
your checked baggage.
3. Sleep when you
can. A tired body is a susceptible body. Resist the
urge to binge on airplane
movies during that cross
country flight. Instead, rely
on your eye mask, ear
plugs and cozy socks to
help you log a few extra
hours of rest, relaxation,
and cold-fighting.
4.
Don't
spread
germs. Before going in for
a round of hugs, kisses and
handshakes straight from
your journey, wash your
hands or put that travelsize hand sanitizer you
packed to good use. Help-
ing to prepare family dinner? Use a spoon just once
for taste-testing; no double-dipping this year!
5. Find the best local
care. Don't try to wish
away a runny nose or
aches and pains. If you do
need to see a doctor, don't
get stuck wasting time or
cash in overcrowded and
expensive
emergency
rooms or urgent care clinics. Use a handy online
website to find local doctors who take your insurance, read reviews from
real patients, and book a
quick appointment. The
typical patient booking
with a reputable online
site sees a doctor within
24 hours.
With these simple
tips, you and your family
will be well-prepared to
avoid illness on the road.
And if you do get sick,
you'll have the tools you
need to recover and get
back to your vacation as
soon as possible.

• If the answer is yes,
make a plan and take positive action, e.g. improve
your skills, volunteer for a
project or increase your
workload. In other words,
make sure your supervisor
notices you for all the right
reasons.
• If the answer is no,
accept the situation and
take action to release any
negativity you feel. For
example, write down your
short- and long-term goals
and
begin
working
towards them.
Avoid
worrying
about things beyond
your control
Office politics, confusing workplace policies and
complex bureaucracies
can sometimes be a fact of
working life. If you’re worrying about big picture
issues that don’t directly
affect you, you may be
finding it difficult to focus.
Action:
Determine if the workplace issue you’re worried
about is central to the work
you’re doing. If it is and it’s
not possible for you to
change the situation,
accept it and do the best
you can under the circumstances or start looking for
a different job.
In just about every
workplace, there’s the
potential to step into
uncomfortable situations.
Being aware of these workplace traps makes it easier
to avoid them. If you have
stepped into a workplace
trap, taking positive action
will help you change either
the situation or your
response to it, and increase
both your satisfaction and
effectiveness.

Avoid inappropriate
online activities
Your employer probably provides you with
online access, including an
email account. In an
increasing number of
workplaces, you may also
be allowed to access social
networking websites. Many
employers can and do keep
track of their employees
Internet use.
Action:
Make sure that the
searches, posts and social
networking you do during
work hours and on workplace computers are related to your job. Check with
your supervisor if it’s okay
to access your personal
email or social networking
account during your
breaks. Never visit a website that you wouldn’t want
your supervisor to know
about. Never email or post
any content that you
wouldn’t want to see, with
your name on it, on an
office bulletin board.
Avoid comparisons
Comparing yourself to
your co-workers creates
anxiety and unhappiness.
Dwelling on how much
better they’re being treated, how much more they’re
making or how much more
attention they’re getting
does not help you. In fact, it
wastes your time, destroys
your morale, increases your
frustration and keeps you
from taking positive action.
Action:
When you’re tempted
to compare your situation
with a co-worker’s, ask
yourself if there’s anything
you can do to change
things:

In most work situations your positive, professional
attitudes
and
actions play a large part in
your success. If you’re feeling down about your job
and stalled on your career
path, it could be because
you’ve stepped into a
workplace trap—a situation where your actions
and attitudes may be making you, your co-workers
and
your
supervisor
uncomfortable.
When you learn to recognize workplace traps,
you can escape from the
ones you’ve stepped into
and step around others.
This article looks at five of
the most common workplace traps and offers suggestions to avoid them.
Avoid complaining
There will always be
problems in the workplace
and complaining won’t
solve them. Complaining is
never a good option
because it just makes a bad
situation worse. It lowers
morale, wastes energy and
gives you a reputation for
negativity that can hurt
your career. In fact, in a
recent survey, the top
workplace pet peeve is
people who complain too
much.
Action:
Do what you can to
change the situation. If
that’s not possible, accept
it and move on. If the situation is unacceptable and
you’ve done everything in
your power to change it
without success, then look
for a different job or ask for
a transfer.
Avoid gossiping
Gossip reduces productivity—if you’re gossiping, you’re not working. It
creates mistrust and suspicion, leads to comparisons
among co-workers and
generally makes for an
unpleasant workplace.

When a co-worker
