CLAY ARTISTRY
WARNING! DO IT NOW!
BEFORE YOU GET THE NASTY
By Barbara Watson
Plasticine, modeling clay, and
play dough, yield to the hands and
fingers and their delight in sculpting.
From ancient times clay from the
earth has been used to make not
only vessels with practical applications but also representations of animals and people.
There are people who are mesmerized by the potential of this pliable material and produce art that is
then fired, and glazed. In our city the
use of clay to make anything from
dinner plates to toilets and sewer
pipes was a business employing
many workers. The business no
longer exists, but the museum documenting that amazing enterprise is a
witness to the utilitarian application
of clay. Today there are artists on the
site. They use the clay to produce
works of art that play with shapes,
forms, and glazes. It’s all there for
those interested to enjoy.
You don’t have to be an artist or
someone needing a set of dishes to
model with clay. You might be a
four-year-old boy whose six-year-old
friend teaches him to use clay to
build a convertible car with tires and
a spare wheel. That was the introduction to sculpting that Chuck Oldham had. In a YouTube lesson he
demonstrates that first creation
which led him to a life long love of
sculpting with this gift from the
earth.
Medicine Hat’s sculptors and
potters are always engaged using
clay to create. There are some who
putter at this pursuit. They met at
the Hat Art Club recently to enjoy
kneading and forming something

Hands on joy with the helpful Annette checking the art
specific. The project was quite
almost daunting. A female model
dressed in a robe sat in front of the
group. Some sculptors could see her
from the right side, some from the
left, some from the back and some
from the front. For a novice this task
presented a tremendous challenge.
How could a person take this rectangular lump of clay and wind up with
a representation of a beautiful
woman?
This is where a knowledgeable
instructor makes the impossible possible. Annette is used to working
with beginners. She broke the task
down into several manageable
stages. After that it was up to the eye
of each sculptor to see what was
actually there. And as each sculptor
saw all the other sides of the figure
for 15 minutes or so at a time, forms
resembling this person took shape.
Annette paused at each person’s
work of art and suggested a way to
make this or that detail realistic. We
learned how to make the collar of
the robe as well as the cuffs of the
robe, which then gave the illusion of
a complete robe.
The allure that this particular
medium has for artists is that it can
be shaped with the tools at hand.
The two hands that deliver the
artist’s concept to the receptive
material are considered the best
tools. It is accepted that “hands on”
experience brings with it a great
measure of success. Working with
clay is the ultimate in working this
way.
After being in the class with the
model and working the clay to represent the human form it was only
natural to research prominent clay
artists. I found one who enjoyed clay
as a child but grew up to work in the
corporate world. He’d left clay art
behind, something his parents probably applauded.
Few parents
encourage their children to pursue a

5 questions you should ask your pharmacist
(BPT) - A visit to the
pharmacy can be about
more than just picking up
prescriptions or supplies for
the medicine cabinet. It can
actually be an important,
and convenient, time to ask
your pharmacist key questions that could impact
your health.
People are encouraged
to use their pharmacist as a
resource for information
about everything from prescription medication to
lifestyle changes. There are
five key questions you
should frequently ask your
pharmacist.
What can I expect from
this medication?
Whether you're picking
up an over-the-counter
remedy or a prescription,
you should feel free to ask
your pharmacist what to
expect from the medication.

that you should be aware of
before you take them. It
may be something as mild
as a little stomach discomfort or drowsiness, but
knowing what to expect
will help you handle any
potential side effects. Also,
knowing what to expect
could keep you from blaming any new, unrelated
symptoms on your medication.
You should also ask
how long it will take for
your medication to make
you feel better. Most antibiotics should have you feeling better in three to five
days, but an anti-depressant may need to be in your
system for three weeks
before you begin to feel its
effects. If a prescription
medicine doesn't seem to
be working in the proper
time frame, you should let
your doctor know. Remember that sudden discontinuation of some medications,
without proper professional advice, can be costly to
your health.
How long should I take
an over the counter medication before I call my doctor?

a number of ailments, but
sometimes you need to see
a doctor either for a prescription or a correct diagnosis of your symptoms.
Your pharmacist can help
guide you when you're not
sure if it is time to see a doctor.
A pharmacist can give
you advice on how quickly
you should see symptom
relief with an over-thecounter medication. Many
times, people will treat
themselves too long with
over-the-counter medicine
or will switch from one
product to another looking
for relief, and many times
don't go to a physician
when they need to.
How do I manage my
condition?
When someone leaves
the doctor's office after a
diagnosis, they may be
scared or shell-shocked.
There may be questions
about medication or daily
management that they didn't think to ask. That's where
a pharmacist can help.
A pharmacist can
counsel you about weight
loss, healthy eating and
ways to promote cardiovascular activity. With proper
disease management, some
patients
can
actually
reduce or eliminate their
need for prescription medication altogether.
Do these medicines
mix?
It is important to ask a
pharmacist about whether
any new medication will
mix well with other things
you are already taking.
Dietary supplements,
herbal supplements and
over-the-counter
medicines can interact or interfere with prescription medications. When you are
having a prescription filled,
your pharmacist should ask
you about all other medications that you're taking. If
you're on prescription medication, check with the
pharmacist before beginning any new over-thecounter supplements or
medication to make sure it
is safe.
What should I do about
my persistent, minor symptoms?
You should never hesitate to ask a pharmacist
about a persistent, minor
symptom that might be
bothering you.
If you're having a nonspecific or persistent symptom that you think is minor,
you should still ask your
pharmacist about it. A pharmacist can recommend an
over-the-counter medicine
that may relieve symptoms,
but can also advise you to
see a doctor about your
symptom rather than ignoring it.
A pharmacist can be a
great source of health information. All you have to do is
ask.

The Natural Healing Clinic has been helping people
in Medicine Hat for 20 years. We have been through
many changes over the years, trying to find the best way
to help people be healthier.
Dr. Albert Schweitzer said “Within every patient there
resides a doctor and we as physicians are at our best
when we put our patients in touch with the doctor inside
themselves”. That is what we have been focusing on for
the last 10 years, teaching people about natural healing
methods so they can be more aware of their own needs
and address them before they get really sick. For those
that are really sick, when they come to see us, we teach
them the best way for their particular body to heal itself.
Natural Healing isn’t as easy as popping a pill or
taking a multi-vitamin. We all know that taking the easy
route just doesn’t address the real problem that lurks
underneath. For the thousands we have helped here,
they are now more self sufficient and understand their
special weaknesses and needs.
For those who would like to look at past
articles we have written or handouts that
we use in the clinic, we are now on
facebook: facebook.com/naturalhealingclinic
AND many will also appear on our blog:
www.teachyourselftoheal@wordpress.com
We look forward to helping many more people over
the next 20 years.

Every year in March, dietitians across the country remind us of the importance of
healthy eating and the positive impact nutrition has on our health and well-being.
Eating well will help you feel your best every day and can help prevent heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and some types of cancer.
Aging affects nutrition. As you get older, you need to eat less food (fewer calories)
but you need the same amount, or even more, of certain vitamins and minerals. To get
the food and nutrients you need, plan your meals.
Plan for three meals and one to three small snacks each day. Skipping any meal,
especially breakfast, will make it difficult to get all the nutrients you need each day.
Choose foods from the four food groups at each meal
Canada's Food Guide Recommends…
Seven servings from the vegetable and fruit group each day. Some examples of a
serving are: 1/2 cup fresh, frozen or canned fruit or vegetables, 1 fruit, 1/2 cup 100% juice
or 1 cup of raw leafy vegetables.
Six servings for women and seven servings for men each day from the grain products group. Examples of a serving from this group are: one slice of bread, 1/2 bagel, 1/2
pita or tortilla, 1/2 cup (125 mL) cooked rice, cooked cereal, or cooked pasta.
Increasing intake of milk and alternatives to three servings each day to help meet
increased needs for vitamin D. Examples of a serving from this food group are: one cup
(250 mL) milk, 1/2 cup (125 mL) canned evaporated milk, one cup fortified soy beverage,
3/4 cup (175 g) yogurt, 1 1/2 ounces (50 grams) of cheese.
Two servings for woman and three servings for men each day from the meat and
alternatives group. Examples of a serving are: 2 1/2 ounces (1/2 cup) cooked poultry, fish,
shellfish and lean meat, 2 eggs, 2 tablespoons of peanut or nut butters, 3/4 cup (175 mL)
cooked legumes or tofu or 1/4 cup (60 mL) nuts or seeds.
Eating alone can be difficult for people of any age. Cooking alone may seem like
more work, but there are ways to put the fun back into eating. Start with keeping your
fridge and cupboards full of nutritious foods that you enjoy.
Try to share meals. Studies show that when you eat with others, you eat healthier.
You could try organizing a ‘meal sharing group’ and get together with a few friends or
family who also have empty nests and share the cooking tasks. When you do this, you
can still buy the larger portions, but you get to have some fun and share the cooking
and the delicious outcome with the group. Treat yourself well by making plans to eat

7 mind-blowing ways smart hearing aids can change your life
4. They anticipate and adapt automatically
Smart hearing aids constantly scan the environment to determine the optimal listening mode
for your current situation. For example, at a noisy
family gathering, the hearing aids can automatically focus on Aunt Sally talking in front of you. They
even know when you're driving a car from the
sound of the engine. The microphones automatically adjust to the side or back seat so you can hear
passengers clearly without turning your head.
(BPT) - Smart devices are everywhere today.
From phones and watches to appliances and even
toothbrushes, smart devices are easy and intuitive
to use, anticipate your needs and desires, are interactive, and seamlessly connect with your other
high-tech devices.
Even hearing aids are getting a high-tech
upgrade, with brands now making smart hearing
aids. But how do you know if a smart hearing aid is
for you? Check out the top seven features of smart
hearing aids and see how they can redefine quality
of life for you and your loved ones:
1. They mimic the way your brain hears
Did you know you hear with your brain, not your
ears? When fit as a pair, smart hearing aids share and
exchange information in real time, imitating how
the brain naturally hears. This type of technology is
called binaural (two-ear) hearing.
2. They outperform normal hearing
Ever had trouble hearing in a busy restaurant?
Smart hearing aids automatically tune in to speech
you want to hear while suppressing unwanted background noise. This has been proven to provide better hearing in these situations than people with perfectly normal hearing.
3. They outsmart wind
If you've ever been on the phone when the wind
is blowing, you know what it's like to have wind
wreak havoc on your conversation. With traditional
hearing aids, the same thing happens when wind
hits the tiny microphones. Smart hearing aids outsmart wind by taking the audio signal from the
hearing aid with less wind and instantly transferring
it to the side with more wind.
5. They continuously learn
Manual volume or treble adjustments are
sometimes needed when you first wear hearing
aids but nobody wants to be constantly fiddling
with these controls. Smart hearing aids remember
and learn from every volume adjustment you
make, so in just a few weeks they will have learned
your personal listening preferences.

6. They put you in control
Automatic adjustments are very convenient, but
in some situations it's good to know you can still
take manual control when wanted. Smart hearing
aids make these manual adjustments easy and discreet by integrating with your smartphone. Free
smartphone apps allow you to discreetly control the
volume, program and treble of your hearing aids.
Another app lets you choose the direction you want
to listen just by tapping your phone.
7. They connect to other devices
Smart hearing aids use Bluetooth technology to
transform your hearing aids into wireless stereo earbuds. They give you the freedom to interact with all
of your devices, so you can stream a phone call, listen to iTunes or Pandora radio, or stream Netflix
from your TV or tablet.
Remember, all hearing aids should help you
hear better but the most intelligent hearing aids
take advantage of the latest technology to address
all of your listening needs. Talk with your hearing
care professional to find out if smart hearing aids are
the right solution for you.
All tours are professionally hosted & include all gratuities.

The artist I found returned

He says, “For me working with

He’d left behind a corporate

5 health improvements
you can make today that will
pay off for a lifetime
(BPT) - Improving your health
and wellness can seem like a daunting task, especially if you know you
have some bad
health habits to
break. But, several improvements you can
make today can
result
in
tremendous
health benefits.
It
starts
with you. You
have more control over your
health than you
think you do.
Here are
five steps you
can take today
that can have a
positive impact on your overall
health and wellness.
Stop smoking
Everyone knows smoking is bad
for you. In fact, people who smoke
have by far the greatest risk of lung
cancer, and increased risk of a cardiac
event. But, many people don't realize
that changes in the lungs caused by
smoking can actually improve over
time once a smoker quits.
Even if you've smoked for many
years, you can reduce your lung cancer risks just by quitting. This isn't just
about your own health. Smoking
puts the ones you love at risk,
because even second-hand smoke
can cause cancer. So, quitting is a
win-win for you and those you love.
People who want to quit smoking do better when they set a target
date to quit. Try working with your
primary health care provider who
can actually individualize a stopsmoking plan for you. Getting support from others is a crucial part of
the battle.
Increase your water intake
Sixty percent of your body
weight is water. Your body depends
on water to carry nutrients to cells
and to flush toxins out of vital
organs, so getting the right amount
of fluids each day is crucial.
Men should drink 3 liters, or 13
cups, per day. For women, the recommendation is 2.2 liters, or 9 cups, per
day. If that recommendation seems
tough to follow, try dividing it up
throughout the day.
Make sure you have water with
every meal and also drink water at
least once between each meal. That
divides up your fluid intake and can
make the amount seem less daunting.
And, you don't have to stick to
water. Milk, coffee, and other drinks
that contain a lot of water and not a
lot of calories count towards your
daily fluid intake.
Exercise
Exercise reduces your risk for
chronic disease, improves balance
and coordination and helps with
weight loss. Exercise is a key part of
living a healthy life.
150 minutes a week of moderate
exercise, or 90 minutes of vigorous
exercise a week, for adults is recommended.
Protein weight loss.
Lose 2-4 lbs a week
I lost 30 lbs and
I will be your coach!
NEW TO
REFLECTIONS!
Laser Hair
Removal and
Photofacials
That sounds like a lot, but, if you
break it into 15-or-20-minute daily
workouts it's much easier to fit into
your schedule.
You don't have
to spend hours
at a time in the
gym to reap the
benefits.
Adopt the
Mediterranean
diet
The
Mediterranean
diet is a diet rich
in fruits, vegetables, olive oil,
nuts and fish.
The results of
numerous studies show longterm
health
benefits to adopting the diet.
This is a diet filled with antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. This
diet has been shown to reduce the
risk of heart disease and cancer
when adhered to long-term. Weight
loss and improvement in cholesterol
can be seen after just a few months.
Have your cholesterol checked
You might be surprised to learn
that you should begin having your
cholesterol monitored by a doctor at
age 20.
There is no reason to avoid having your cholesterol checked. If your
cholesterol levels aren't where they
should be, you can change them.
Levels that are too high can be
controlled by diet, quitting smoking,
exercise, and even prescription medication.
There are so many things we can
do to improve not only the length of
our life, but the quality of those
years. Don't wait. Commit today to
making a few small changes, and see
how they improve your health over
time.

full baths need 30 to 35 square feet for a stand-up shower or bathtub.

• Add illumination to rooms. A dark home is a

"staycation" has grown in popularity. Decks and patios
can make backyards more appealing. The scope of your
investment will depend on the size of the deck and
design. Doing the work yourself can cut the cost of decks
in half, but only if you have the specific tools or experience to tackle such a project.
• Improve curb appeal. Adding attractive landscaping and freshening up the entryway to a home can add
considerable value to your home, as buyers judge homes
by their exteriors. Completely renovated interiors may
never be seen if buyers pass up your home because of a
less attractive exterior. Classy, subtle changes, like wellplaced shrubbery and a green lawn, can work wonders.

The Properties
Your guide to RENOVATING or RELOCATING!
Redefine a space with an interior decorator's help
(MS)Those who have already invested quite a bit of
money into their homes but want to add some finishing
touches would be wise to hire interior decorators or
designers. Homeowners often have no idea where to
begin when attempting to establish flow from room to
room in their homes. Decorators can help homeowners
tailor the interiors of their homes to the homes produce
the desired vibe.
Hiring a designer can help a person avoid making
potentially costly design errors. An aesthetically appealing house also can increase the home's value, setting a
property above others in terms of appeal. Even though
the designer will charge
a fee, the investment
may be well worth the
expense when the room
is done right the first
time.
Interior decorators
have
numerous
resources at their disposal. Fine tuned to the
world of design, they
understand which trends
will come and go and
also which design ideas
have staying power. In
addition, decorators will
be in touch with vendors
in the industry, connecting homeowners with
the best of the best in
terms of providing furniture, housewares, photography, and additional
special touches that help
make a house a home.
In addition to expertise and resources, interior decorators have eyes
that will be trained on
things homeowners may
not have noticed or even
realized can be done. A
designer may envision
removing a room to create more space or knocking a wall down to let
more natural light into a
room.

Things that mar an automotive paint job
A car owner who decides he or she wants the car to
remain in the best shape possible will have to take an
active role in maintenence and damage prevention. One
of the key things to remember is to never allow any substance to remain on the paint for too long.
• UV light: Just as UV light can affect skin, hair and
other parts of the body, it also can affect the paint on a
car. UV rays oxidize the paint and cause a white, powdery
film to form on the car. Washing the car frequently
enough and applying the best quality wax will help
keep UV rays from penetrating through the paint.
• Over sprays: Life does not stop to allow cars to
drive through, particularly when it comes to construction zones. It's possible for a car to be doused in paint
spray, tar, concrete, and other chemicals that are routinely used in construction. Do not allow these substances to harden on the car. Rinse promptly with automotive soap. Try to avoid construction zones whenever
possible.
• Natural substances: Tree sap, bird droppings and
splattered insects contain compounds that can erode
the paint on a car. Avoid parking under large trees
where sap and bird droppings may be prevalent. In
terms of bug splatter, try to wash it off as soon as possible to alleviate damage.
• Eggs: Oftentimes, rambunctious children think it
is funny to egg a car. However, the enzymes and sulfur
content in eggs can cause paint and clear coat to dissolve, leaving white spots in the wake of the egg.
Because egg can be sticky and very hard to remove
once dried, it is helpful to wash it off as soon as possible.
It takes only a few hours for the damage to be permanent.

A passion with safety in mind
When driving a
motorcycle,
you
should never be overconfident... better to
be cautious and anticipate what could happen. Anticipating the
road and any obstacles means looking
ahead as the bike will
always head towards
where you are looking. So, on a winding
road, when negotiating a bend, you
shouldn’t look at the
bend you’re in but
rather at the next one.
Indeed, looking ahead
is the key safety element when on two
wheels; this is what
influences your driving. You should
always stay on the
part of the road
where you have maximum visibility and
avoid straying into
the opposite lane.

Simple steps that help people with diabetes
keep their feet healthy
(BPT) - A diabetes diagnosis can
be daunting, but a simple attitude
adjustment can make a world of difference in how well you fare while living with the disease. By proactively
taking steps to monitor key health
indicators, experts agree that it's possible to prevent some of the most
severe risks of diabetes,
including lower limb
amputation.
People ages 20 and
older who are living with
diabetes account for
about 60 percent of nontraumatic
lower-limb
amputations.
The occurrence of
diabetes-related
foot
and lower-leg amputation has decreased by 65
percent since 1996.
Working together, podiatrists and their patients
with diabetes can reduce the number
of amputations even more.
People with diabetes may be less
aware of cuts or wounds on their feets
due to the nerve damage related to
their disease. Regular and vigilant foot
care can help catch problems before
they develop into a health crisis.
Here is advice to help people with
diabetes protect their foot health:
• Inspect your feet daily, checking
the entire foot and all 10 toes for cuts,
bruises, sores or changes to the toenails, such as thickening or discoloration. Treat wounds immediately
and see your podiatrist if a problem
persists or infection is apparent.
• Exercise by walking, which can
help you maintain a healthy weight
and improve circulation. Be sure to
wear appropriate athletic shoes
appropriate for the type of exercise
you're doing.
• When you buy new shoes, have
them properly measured and fitted.
Foot size and shape can change over
time, and ill-fitting shoes are a leading
cause of foot pain and lesions. Certain
types of shoes, socks and custom
orthotics are available for people with
diabetes, and they may be covered by
insurance.
• Keep your feet covered and
never go barefoot even at home. The
risk of cuts and infection is too great.
• See a podiatrist to remove calluses, corns or warts - don't tackle them
yourself and don't ask a unlicensed
non-professional to do it. Over-thecounter products can burn your skin
and injure your foot. Podiatrists are
specially trained to address all aspects
of foot health for people with diabetes.
• Get checkups twice a year. An
exam by your podiatrist is the best
way to ensure your feet stay healthy.
For people with diabetes, taking
charge of your own foot health can
help you avoid foot-related complications like amputation. Work with
today's podiatrist to help you safeguard your foot health.

The pleasure of driving on two wheels has to be combined with flawless safety practices.
Certain skills have to be
mastered in order to drive a
motorcycle. The pleasure of
driving on two wheels must
be combined with flawless
safety practices. After all, the
smallest of errors can be fatal.
Before getting on their
bikes, motorcyclists must first
of all pay careful attention to
their clothing. Why? Because
their clothing is the only form
of protection they have. Everyone has scraped a knee on
asphalt when riding a bike or a
scooter as a child, so just imagine the result of a fall or a crash
at 100 km/hour! an hour!
Wearing a jacket made of
leather or an anti-abrasive
material is not a luxury, it’s a
necessity, whatever the weather. Gloves and boots are other
indispensable items in a
motorcyclist’s wardrobe. As far
as helmets are concerned, full
face models offer the best protection.
Short trips are advisable
for the first few outings in
order to get the feel of the
motorcycle.The techniques for
maintaining balance at slow
speeds, negotiating bends and
corners, braking at intersections, and avoiding obstacles
must be mastered perfectly —
all while keeping to the speed
limits, of course. Sharing the
road with other users is another important element that will
only succeed if everyone
behaves in a safe and courteous manner.
Being aware of the risks
attached to driving a motorcycle and being capable of managing them is to demonstrate
an exemplary, proactive attitude, one which will never
detract from your pleasure
and sense of freedom.

Tax Tips For Families With Children
Child Amount: Families will benefit from a $2,255 child amount for each
child under the age of 18 for the last time in 2014. This will result in a
federal tax saving of $338 per child. And if one parent cannot use the
entire amount to lower their tax payable, the unused amount can be
transferred to a spouse or common-law partner.
Credit for being active: The Children’s Fitness Amount is a nonrefundable credit is worth up to $1,000 for children under the age of 16
enrolled in an eligible program of physical activity. Not every program
meets the eligibility guidelines so you need to ensure you know the
requirements. Make sure you keep your receipts. Disabled
children will also qualify for the credit if they are under 18.
Artistic credit: The Children’s Arts Credit is another non-refundable
credit worth up to $500 for children under the age of 16 enrolled in an
eligible program. This could include language classes, Girl Guides or
Scouts, art classes or ballet lessons. Again, keep your receipts to make the
claim.
Universal Child Care Benefit: This is available to any family with
children regardless of their household income. It used to be available
only for children under the age of six. However, effective January 2015, a
new $60 per month component will be paid for children over five and
under 18. The component for children under six will also be increased
from $100 to $160 per month. Parents will receive a retroactive payment
in July 2015 for the enhanced amounts for the first six months of the year
UCCB is taxable in the hands of the lower-income spouse.
Family Tax Cut: For families where one spouse earns more than the
other and have at least one child, they may transfer up to $50,000 in
taxable income to help reduce their family tax liability. The maximum
claim is $2,000.
Save for future education: Designed to help save for a child’s postsecondary education, parents can make up to $50,000 RESP lifetime
contribution. Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG) per year is $500.
Canada Learning Bond: To help lower income families, the Government
provides $500 in a CLB at birth for children whose families are entitled to
the National Child Benefit Supplement. As long as the family is still
entitled to the supplement they will receive an additional $100 CLB each
year until the age of 15.
Trained and trusted, we ensure you get the most out of your taxes.

(MS) Search engine
optimization, or SEO, is a key
component of online marketing. Although it's widely
regarded as vital to a business' marketing efforts, the
concept of SEO can be confusing.
SEO involves tailoring a
website so
that it pops
up on search
engine
results more
readily and
at a higher
place in the long list of
pages that turn up. There
are databases that list the
most common search terms
people use when browsing
the Internet.Web pages that
are built around the words
and phrases commonly
used, not just in the meta
keywords tag of the site, but
within the important parts
of the pages themselves,
can achieve a better ranking. Additionally, websites
that are linked to by other
sites generate higher rankings in terms of importance
and where
search
engines
place them
in
search
lists.
If SEO
remains a mystery, businesses can employ marketing
firms and businesses that
specialize in SEO to make
recommendations
on
redesigning a website to
generate more consumer
traffic.
