Lent
A NOTE FROM FATHER KEVIN
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Pax et Bonum!
Happy First Sunday of Lent! It is good to continue our season of Lent together around
the Altar of the Lord! May Jesus strengthen each and every one of us especially during this
Lenten Season! We welcome all of our visitors and guests who join us for our Masses this
weekend. It is great to have you with us! In a special way, we welcome Father Bill Garrott, O.P.,
who is here to give our annual Lenten Mission this week. Father Bill will be preaching at all of
our Masses this weekend, please make him feel welcome and don’t be afraid to stop and introduce yourself to him!
It is going to be a great week! Father Bill will be leading us each evening, Monday, February 23, through
Wednesday, February 25, at 7 pm each day, in the Main Sanctuary. The sessions are only going to be an hour each, so
that makes this Lenten Mission ideal for families. And we do invite you to bring the whole family to these sessions!
You’re going to want to take advantage of this! Many times, we can’t get away to do a retreat or attend a conference
on improving our Faith. In these next three days, we are bringing the retreat, the spiritual conference, to you each
evening! This is a great opportunity! What else are you going to do in middle of winter? In the time that it takes to
watch one episode of Law and Order, you can enrich your soul! Come and join us tomorrow night.
So how are you doing with your Lenten resolutions? Do you know, that already there are those who are
breaking their commitments to God for Lent? Stay strong! Your resolutions should have been good ones that are going
to get you closer to God and to Heaven! Don’t give up. Don’t cheat. There was a reason why the Holy Spirit inspired you
to make the resolutions that you did. Honor that Spirit, and remain true to your resolutions! Don’t forget the Stations of
the Cross are being prayed communally every Friday evening during Lent in Church, at 7 pm. The Stations of the Cross
are an amazing devotion! They have brought many people back to the Catholic Church. If you know some nonpracticing Catholics, or even some Catholics who have become a little lax in their Faith, and let’s be honest, we ALL
know some folks in those two particular situations, why not invite them to come and join us for the Stations of the
Cross one of these Friday evenings? You could be God’s instrument! March 13, the high school youth group, TRUTH,
will putting on their very popular LIVE Stations of the Cross, at 7 pm. Mark your calendars now for that special event.
Speaking of high school students, we continue to hear about the incredible things that God did last weekend at
Destination Jesus, with our high school folks. We have great young people, and they are continuing to do great things
for the Lord! Congratulations to all of you who attended last weekend’s event! May you continue to live out God’s love
and peace in your life! I thank the literally hundreds of volunteers from St. Maria Goretti who helped to put on this
weekend for our youth. Your efforts paid off quite well. I would like to especially thank Sheryl Clifford who once again
coordinated volunteers for this huge event for us here at St. Maria Goretti, getting hundreds of us, in the right places,
to help out and make a difference. And this year Sheryl also served as Logistics Director for the entire event! Sheryl
you are amazing! Thank you for all you do! I am convinced that you can organize anything!
Next weekend, we will be hosting the 30th Women’s Christ Renews His Parish weekend, with the 30th Men’s
weekend following on March 7 and 8. It is quite a milestone! As of the time that I am writing this, there are still open
spots on both of these weekends. If you haven’t made a Christ Renews His Parish weekend, this could be your time!
The Christ Renews His Parish experience has changed countless lives right here at St. Maria Goretti and has helped to
make this Parish the strong community that it is. We really want everybody to experience this weekend. If you haven’t
yet, please consider making the weekend THIS spring.
Let’s have a great Lenten Mission and an awesome Lent! May you and I do everything that we can, to get
closer to Jesus this week in our lives!
In Christ,
Fr. Kevin
Love reveals to the heart a view that is invisible to the eye.
Welcome! For more than 19 years now, we have been building the Kingdom of God, not with a few people, but with
everyone! Please accept my warmest welcome, and I pray you will come to know St. Maria Goretti as we all do—our
Spiritual Home and Loving Community. We are glad you are here and look forward to meeting you!
God Bless you. —Father Kevin

STEWARDSHIP
DISCIPLESHIP
The waters of Baptism make us part of the new covenant
in Christ. But the bishops’ pastoral letter
on stewardship reminds us that “there is a fundamental
obligation arising from the sacrament of baptism...
that people place their gifts, their resources—their
selves—-at God’s service in and through the Church.”

What is Fruitful Harvest? And how does it impact SMG?
The Fruitful Harvest campaign helps fund the programs
and outreach missions of the Lafayette Diocese. Here at
SMG, we are running a “dovetail campaign.” This means that
100% of the monies collected in excess of our diocesan
obligation comes back to SMG to benefit our Parish Family.
Have we met our Diocesan obligation for the campaign? Yes
So, now all additional monies pledged and collected will
directly help here at SMG? Yes
Fruitful Harvest is the primary way our Parish Family
cares for debt reduction...or mortgage payments, if you
will. We have a little less than $1.8 million debt remaining from the construction of our church facility. Weekly
tithing funds are not dedicated to this purpose...only
Fruitful Harvest funds.
How many families have responded to the pledge campaign? 41%
Can we still pledge? YES! Please visit SMG’s Website
(smgonline.org) and look for the Fruitful Harvest Pledge
Opportunity on the slideshow.
SAVE THE DATE: SPRING FLING, APRIL 24
Hello Families of St. Maria Goretti,
We would like to introduce ourselves as your
co-chairs of Spring Fling 2015, “An Evening in Wine
Country.” Our planning and preparation is well underway for a fun-filled evening of dinner, auctions,
raffles, music, and surprises. Spring Fling is also St.
Maria Goretti’s only fundraising event of the year.
We are looking for all types of donations, not only
tangible goods, but also unique and exclusive experiences. Original and personal ideas are welcome.
To the many business owners in our Parish Family,
consider one of our many levels of sponsorship
(or is your employer willing to sponsor our event?).
Remember: Donations are tax deductible!
Please contact us, springfling@smgonline.org, with
any questions!
Your co-chairs,
Doug & Valerie Ferry, 414-3372

REFLECTION FOR THE FIRST SUNDAY
IN LENT
In the Gospel we hear, “The Spirit drove
Jesus out into the desert, and he remained
in the desert for forty days, tempted by
Satan.” As we know Jesus resisted the
temptations. How do you encounter temptations? How do you resist them? Ask for
the grace to do so this week.
IN ADDITION—The Respect Life Ministry is asking each
family attending the Mission to bring a box of tissues
for The Little Sisters of the Poor in order to help support the residents of St. Augustine’s Home.
RCIA
RCIA will meet Monday, February 23, at 7 pm, in church
to attend the Parish Mission with Father Bill Garrott, O.P.
2ND GRADE EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
Adoration for all 2nd grade students and their parents
will be Thursday, March 5, 7 pm, in the main church. If
you have any questions, contact Katie Barbour.
PARISH RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEEDS A TEACHER
PRE is looking for a 7th/8th grade teacher for Monday
afternoons, 4-5:15 pm. If interested, contact Katie Barbour.
SILVER ANGELS’ FEBRUARY MEETING
The next Silver Angels meeting is Friday, February 27, immediately after the 8 am Mass in the Parish Narthex. Our guest
speaker is our very own Sue Treida.
IS IT TOO LATE TO SAVE YOUR MARRIAGE?
Retrouvaille ('re-trō-vī) has helped tens of thousands of

apart by a crisis such as infidelity, financial problems,
abuse, addictions, etc. This program can help you. There
are still a few openings for next weekend, February 27–
March 1! Call 489-6811 or e-mail register@RetroIndy.

LATIN MASS PARTS FOR LENT
For this Lenten season, as we have done several times
in the past, St. Maria Goretti will be using the Latin chant
Mass settings that are used all over the world at international Masses, including the Vatican. We have not used
these Latin Mass settings for three years now, and for
this Lenten season only, we will be using these for all our
Masses. The Vatican has recommended that every Catholic know the Mass settings in Latin. And this Lent is an
opportunity for all of us to brush up on our responses.
Even in 2015, Latin is still the official language of the
Catholic Church. We are NOT trying to go back to PreVatican II. We are NOT doing this permanently, but only
for the season of Lent. By singing the original Latin, we
are reminded that our English translation of these exact,
same words is now more identical than ever before. The
Latin is easy to pick up, even if you’ve never studied Latin before. I am asking that all of us give this a chance
and do our best to learn the Latin responses. May the
Latin remind all of us, including this priest, just how big
and “universal” our Church really is!
—Father Kevin
