FEBRUARY 22, 2015 First Sunday of Lent 2 2 || St. St. Maria Maria Goretti Goretti Catholic Catholic Church Church ·· Westfield, Westfield, IN IN November 25, 2012February Thirty-Third Sunday in Sunday Ordinary 22, 2015 First of Time Lent A NOTE FROM FATHER KEVIN Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Pax et Bonum! Happy First Sunday of Lent! It is good to continue our season of Lent together around the Altar of the Lord! May Jesus strengthen each and every one of us especially during this Lenten Season! We welcome all of our visitors and guests who join us for our Masses this weekend. It is great to have you with us! In a special way, we welcome Father Bill Garrott, O.P., who is here to give our annual Lenten Mission this week. Father Bill will be preaching at all of our Masses this weekend, please make him feel welcome and don’t be afraid to stop and introduce yourself to him! It is going to be a great week! Father Bill will be leading us each evening, Monday, February 23, through Wednesday, February 25, at 7 pm each day, in the Main Sanctuary. The sessions are only going to be an hour each, so that makes this Lenten Mission ideal for families. And we do invite you to bring the whole family to these sessions! You’re going to want to take advantage of this! Many times, we can’t get away to do a retreat or attend a conference on improving our Faith. In these next three days, we are bringing the retreat, the spiritual conference, to you each evening! This is a great opportunity! What else are you going to do in middle of winter? In the time that it takes to watch one episode of Law and Order, you can enrich your soul! Come and join us tomorrow night. So how are you doing with your Lenten resolutions? Do you know, that already there are those who are breaking their commitments to God for Lent? Stay strong! Your resolutions should have been good ones that are going to get you closer to God and to Heaven! Don’t give up. Don’t cheat. There was a reason why the Holy Spirit inspired you to make the resolutions that you did. Honor that Spirit, and remain true to your resolutions! Don’t forget the Stations of the Cross are being prayed communally every Friday evening during Lent in Church, at 7 pm. The Stations of the Cross are an amazing devotion! They have brought many people back to the Catholic Church. If you know some nonpracticing Catholics, or even some Catholics who have become a little lax in their Faith, and let’s be honest, we ALL know some folks in those two particular situations, why not invite them to come and join us for the Stations of the Cross one of these Friday evenings? You could be God’s instrument! March 13, the high school youth group, TRUTH, will putting on their very popular LIVE Stations of the Cross, at 7 pm. Mark your calendars now for that special event. Speaking of high school students, we continue to hear about the incredible things that God did last weekend at Destination Jesus, with our high school folks. We have great young people, and they are continuing to do great things for the Lord! Congratulations to all of you who attended last weekend’s event! May you continue to live out God’s love and peace in your life! I thank the literally hundreds of volunteers from St. Maria Goretti who helped to put on this weekend for our youth. Your efforts paid off quite well. I would like to especially thank Sheryl Clifford who once again coordinated volunteers for this huge event for us here at St. Maria Goretti, getting hundreds of us, in the right places, to help out and make a difference. And this year Sheryl also served as Logistics Director for the entire event! Sheryl you are amazing! Thank you for all you do! I am convinced that you can organize anything! Next weekend, we will be hosting the 30th Women’s Christ Renews His Parish weekend, with the 30th Men’s weekend following on March 7 and 8. It is quite a milestone! As of the time that I am writing this, there are still open spots on both of these weekends. If you haven’t made a Christ Renews His Parish weekend, this could be your time! The Christ Renews His Parish experience has changed countless lives right here at St. Maria Goretti and has helped to make this Parish the strong community that it is. We really want everybody to experience this weekend. If you haven’t yet, please consider making the weekend THIS spring. Let’s have a great Lenten Mission and an awesome Lent! May you and I do everything that we can, to get closer to Jesus this week in our lives! In Christ, Fr. Kevin Love reveals to the heart a view that is invisible to the eye. Welcome! For more than 19 years now, we have been building the Kingdom of God, not with a few people, but with everyone! Please accept my warmest welcome, and I pray you will come to know St. Maria Goretti as we all do—our Spiritual Home and Loving Community. We are glad you are here and look forward to meeting you! God Bless you. —Father Kevin Welcome: Alexandria Elkins and Gary & Larkyn Pope 3 | St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church · Westfield, IN MINISTRY CONTACTS & PHONE NUMBERS Adult Bible Study Altar Rosary Society (Women’s Club) Angel Employment Network (AEN) Baptism Preparation Basic Christian Community (BCC) Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP) - Men - Women Confirmation Confraternity of Christian Mothers Cursillo Donuts and Coffee Elijah Cup Eucharistic Adoration Gabriel Project HELP Shepherd’s Gate Holy Name Society (Men of Service) Italian Festival Knights of Columbus Landscape Volunteers Librarian/Historian Liturgy Committee Decorating Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Readers Training Readers Scheduling Ministers of Welcome Music Ministry Scheduling Liturgical Ministers Servers for Mass Market Day Marriage Preparation (Pre-Cana, sponsors) Meals Ministry Natural Family Planning - Creighton Model Sympto-Thermal Method Nursery Co-op during Mass Parish Religious Education (PRE) Protocol In-service (All adults working with minors) Respect Life Ministry Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) Rite of Christian Initiation of Children (RCIC) ROCK (Reaching Out to College Students) Cub Scouts (www.smgpack152.org) Boy Scouts Girl Scouts Silver Angels (55 & Older) Sisterhood of Marietta Sports Ministry Spring Fling St. Francis Ministry St. Philip Neri Oratorio Technology Support Group Temple Knights of the Holy Eucharist Wedding Coordinator Welcome Committee Young Adult Ministry Youth Ministry HOPE Coordinator TRUTH Coordinator David Bain 575-8945 Ruth Bloss 765-427-9535 Bill Lilegdon 814-5999 Gordon & Mary Ann Smith 843-1339 Melinda Brown 663-7654 Matt Fallin 587-2202 Karla Cockman 569-9447 Leslie Mimms 867-3213, ext. 1421 Molly Mirande 867-1848 Tom & Joan Scimeca 571-8510 Toby & Ashley Knott 607-8623 Ann Worcester 669-7095 Carol Alvarez 372-3713 Katie Svec 774-7832 Jennifer Murphy 867-3213, ext. 1225 Tara Quirke 372-6275 Chrissy Davis (Scheduling) 640-8742 Maryann Davis (Donations) 574-274-2144 Dan DeCraene 414-2901 Josh & Miranda Moriarity 614-353-7922 Jeff & Missy Hopp 867-4849 Dave Langenkamp 903-0532 Keltie Domina 569-1258 Joann Wack 773-8449 Jenny Sergio 269-267-5680 Carla Erickson 571-9662 Jolene McCann 566-1760 Kathy Lengerich 896-5898 Jeff Bowen 571-9035 Jim Wack 773-8449 Mark Worcester 753-0944 Leslie Franzen 867-3213, ext. 1209 Mary Cummins 501-0805 Jen Downing 896-9123 Melanie Perhacs 502-2168 Jennifer Taylor 262-443-4126 Kyle & Twyla Arnold 399-8038 Erika Haahr 402-2260 Kerry Lett 549-5280 BrieAnne Eichorn & Kathryn Niswonger 726-0777 Julie & Marc Weinkauf 669-7096 Jenny Muller 294-3107 Katie Barbour 867-3213, ext. 1139 Connie Anderson 867-3213, ext. 1203 Sara Phillips 371-2130 Dan Dessauer & Joan Scimeca 770-7190 Connie Anderson 867-3213, ext. 1203 Daria Gabany 371-3465 Jennifer Weber 201-0087 Ward LaPaglia 896-9887 Jamie Degler 896-1027 Dan Breen 896-1487 Jenny Sherman & Julie Weinkauf 331-6532 Pat Biddlecombe 867-3213, ext. 1226 Tina Uhland Doug & Valerie Ferry 418-7439 Mike & Jill Lyons 569-7728 Mike Treida 867-3213 ext. 1229 Corky Aiken 805-8149 Troy Pagán 867-3213, ext. 1218 Deacon Steve Miller 574-1705 Nancy Rumschlag 460-5565 Traci Bubalo 650-4663 Josh & Miranda Moriarity 260-235-0830 867-3213 Eric Gellenbeck 867-3213, ext. 1423 Rob Bloss 867-3213, ext. 1420 “Is there a place for me to serve here at St. Maria Goretti?” YES!! And how does it impact SMG? The Fruitful Harvest campaign helps fund the programs and outreach missions of the Lafayette Diocese. Here at SMG, we are running a “dovetail campaign.” This means that 100% of the monies collected in excess of our diocesan obligation comes back to SMG to benefit our Parish Family. Have we met our Diocesan obligation for the campaign? Yes So, now all additional monies pledged and collected will directly help here at SMG? Yes Fruitful Harvest is the primary way our Parish Family cares for debt reduction...or mortgage payments, if you will. We have a little less than $1.8 million debt remaining from the construction of our church facility. Weekly tithing funds are not dedicated to this purpose...only Fruitful Harvest funds. How many families have responded to the pledge campaign? 41% Can we still pledge? YES! Please visit SMG’s Website (smgonline.org) and look for the Fruitful Harvest Pledge Opportunity on the slideshow. February 24 March 9 March 10 March 11 March 16 March 18 March 26 Sacred Heart Holy Spirit Geist St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Our Lady of Grace Our Lady of Mt. Carmel St. Maria Goretti St. Alphonsus Liguori Cicero Fishers Carmel Noblesville Carmel Westfield Zionsville LATIN MASS PARTS FOR LENT For this Lenten season, as we have done several times in the past, St. Maria Goretti will be using the Latin chant Mass settings that are used all over the world at international Masses, including the Vatican. We have not used these Latin Mass settings for three years now, and for this Lenten season only, we will be using these for all our Masses. The Vatican has recommended that every Catholic know the Mass settings in Latin. And this Lent is an opportunity for all of us to brush up on our responses. Even in 2015, Latin is still the official language of the Catholic Church. We are NOT trying to go back to PreVatican II. We are NOT doing this permanently, but only for the season of Lent. By singing the original Latin, we are reminded that our English translation of these exact, same words is now more identical than ever before. The Latin is easy to pick up, even if you’ve never studied Latin before. I am asking that all of us give this a chance and do our best to learn the Latin responses. May the Latin remind all of us, including this priest, just how big and “universal” our Church really is! —Father Kevin HNS FAMOUS LENTEN FISH FRYS Two more Lenten Fish Frys, sponsored by SMG’s Holy Name Society, are coming up March 13 and March 20, 5:30-8 pm, in the Parish Hall.
