Third Sunday of Lent § March 8, 2015 27101 W. Chicago St., Redford, MI 48239 (313) 937-1500 • office@strobertbellarmine.com • www.strobertbellarmine.com Parish Mission 2015 March 22nd to 25th Sunday-Wednesday 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. Sessions will be led by Fr. John Phelps & Sr. Rosalie Esquerra Our Mission St. Robert Bellarmine is a welcoming Catholic community, which strives to bring people to God and God to people through the ministries of worship, stewardship, education and Christian service. Welcome St. Robert Bellarmine Parish Family welcomes all those new to our parish. If you have been attending Mass here and would like to be registered in the parish, please stop by or call the parish office. We look forward to meeting you and telling you about your new parish. Mass Schedule Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday: 8:30 a.m. Friday at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at 4:00 p.m. Sunday at 6:30, 8:30 & 10:30 a.m. Reconciliation Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Weekly Readings Ex 20:1-3, 7-8, 12-17 1 Cor 1:22-25 Jn 2:13-25 Monday: 2 Kgs 5:1-15b Lk 4:24-30 Tuesday: Dn 3:25, 34-43 Mt 18:21-35 Wednesday: Dt 4:1, 5-9 Mt 5:17-19 Thursday: Jer 7:23-28 Lk 11:14-23 Friday: Hos 14:2-10 Mk 12:28-34 Saturday: Hos 6:1-6 Lk 18:9-14 Sunday: 1 Sm 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a Eph 5:8-14 Jn 9:1-41 or 9:1, 6-9, 13-38 Sunday: And to those who sold doves he said, “Take these out of here, and stop making my Father’s house a marketplace.” His disciples recalled the words of Scripture, “Zeal for your house will consume me.” - Jn 2:16-17 “While He was in Jerusalem for the feast of Passover, many began to believe in His name when they saw the signs He was doing.” How we would love to see those signs! How easy it would be for us to believe if we too could witness Jesus healing the sick, feeding the multitudes, calming the storm. It's tempting to imagine that faith was a simple thing back in those days. We might be inclined to think that we don't have the same benefits as those first believers, and so faith is harder in our day and age. But is it, really? “Jesus, how do we know You?” In truth, we have an advantage that none of those people had: two thousand years of Church history! Two millennia of faithful, prayerful Christians believing in Jesus and spreading the Gospel; the collective witness of the saints--many of whom have also worked “signs” in Jesus' name; the effects of the Church on culture and the world through its schools, its hospitals, its spiritual movements, and religious institutions; the unbroken line of apostolic succession that traces back to the time of Christ. Just the fact alone that the Church is still alive and well in spite of all of its sinful members ought to be miracle enough for us. But even with all of this testimony, it's important to remember that seeing signs and believing in Jesus are not the same thing. Even those who witnessed Jesus' miracles had to take the next step by choosing to accept Him as their Lord. Ultimately, all of these convincing details are not the point. The point is to encounter Jesus on a personal level. The signs may open the door to bring us closer to Him, but it's up to us to walk through that door. May we walk so as to come “to believe the Scripture.” The Lenten season is one of repentance, self-denial, almsgiving, and prayer. Many in our modern world do not see any wisdom in denying themselves anything. Lent is a time to put aside that which we feel and think as humans and put on the attitude of Christ. The cross of Christ is neither easy nor fleeting, and it will ask us to deny our very selves for Him. To the human mind it makes no sense. However, by putting on Christ and seeing with His eyes, we see reality with clarity. Our sacrifice can lead to riches that only a “foolish” man would covet. But it is exactly there that we are satisfied and fulfilled. When has the message of the cross not made any sense to me? When has it? March 7-8, 2015 Page 3 St. Robert Bellarmine and St. John Bosco Parishes Parish Mission Fr. Phelps and Sr. Rosalie Esquerra wish to thank everyone who filled out an opinionaire at the Liturgy last December, 2014. We are studying your responses to discover, as best we can, where your parish is along your journey of faith. We ask you to pray for us that we may be able to do our best for all of you. We asked you to share with us a little bit of your own lives. Today we wish to share with you some of our faith-journey as a way to explain what we will be doing. Each evening will be inviting you to walk with us as fellow Catholic Christians in our quest to know Jesus and to follow Him as He calls us. “Jesus, how do we know You?” We hope to open the Bible ... the Word of Life...for everyone to discover Jesus' way of telling us Who He is. We will ask everyone to bring a Bible, if you have one. There will be Bibles for those who lack one. The second session will explore the "ordinary way" that a Christian walks who answers Jesus' call, "Come, follow Me". The Bible will be our guide. We will use the Bible in such a way that anyone who is not familiar with it will be able to follow along. The next evening “Reconcile and Forgive" becomes the way of acting as a disciple of Jesus. We will invite everyone to experience forgiveness and discover how to give to others the value of forgiving. In the last evening we will look into something of what goes into doing what Jesus wants, namely, to "Become My People". We hope all of you are able to find your way to come to all the evenings. If it is not possible, know you can make as many evenings as possible. Let's pray for each other. Let's pray we gain an insight into what it means to know Jesus and to choose to follow Him. Fr. John Phelps, C.S.S.R, and Sr. Rosalie Esquerra, O.P. Celebrate the Season of Lent Does Lent begin and end each year and you find yourself asking how did I strengthen my relationship with God? We joined with other junior high youth from area parishes to learn about the issue of hunger in the world, participate in a prayer service, and then work on packaging 19,000 meals. It was amazing to see how quickly it all came together! It was beautiful to witness our teens putting their faith into action, and having a fun time of it! We do not have a Catholic Youth Trek event for March, and judging by the calendar, perhaps that is a good thing! News about our April event will be out soon! High School Youth Ministry Our high school teens persevered through power outages last Sunday for a busy youth ministry meeting. We talked about the various sacrifices and activities that we are using to observe the season of Lent. We also stopped in the midst of this busy season to spend some time reading and reflecting on some scripture passages. Permission slips were distributed for our ever popular WAYMC Lock-In. If you missed the meeting, please stop by to pick up your form. They are due by our next meeting on March 15th! Before we go to the lock-in we will have the opportunity to serve at the fish fry. The plan is to serve dinner, go home to clean and pack up, then meet back at SRB to head to the lock-in. Our high school teens are cooking up an egg hunt for the younger children of our parish! We will be collecting plastic eggs and candy that is individually wrapped for this new event to be held on Holy Saturday after the food blessing. We will put bins at the parish entrances for those who would like to contribute. We will be having a high school mission trip this summer! We will be joining with a group from St. John Neumann, and for this first trip we can take six high school teens with us to Traverse City. We will be working on a Habitat for Humanity building project, and helping with the Habitat Restore. If you are interested, please make sure to get your name in for consideration right away. The dates of the trip are June 28th to July 3rd, and the fee for the week is only $170. When has it? March 7-8, 2015 Page 5 Catholic Social Teaching: The Church’s Best Kept Secret (Part III) By Laura Scanlan Part IV, Rerum Novarum (On the Concern of Labor, 1891). As you may recall in the first part of these articles on Catholic Social Teaching, Pope Leo XIII felt that the Church needed to address the social issues of that time. He rejected Communism but understood why it appealed to the workers. He also rejected the great disparity between the rich and the poor. His concerns were addressed in his Encyclical letter Rerum Novarum (On the Concern of Labor, 1891). Part IV of this article will explain the role of private property as addressed in this Encyclical Letter. The Role of Private Property Every man has the right to own private property. This is the reason a man works. Pope Leo felt that it benefited man to own property in addition he had a right to own property. The law should encourage ownership of land by as many people as possible. By owning property the gap between the rich and the poor becomes smaller. A man can grow crops on his property and therefore feed himself and his family. He can also grow crops and sell them to other individuals. “Those who do not possess the soil contribute their labor; hence, it may truly be said that all human subsistence is derived either from labor on one’s own land, or from some toil, some calling, which is paid for either in the produce of the land itself, or in that which is exchanged for what the land brings forth.” (8) A man works harder when he owns his own property. He is less likely to move to another country if he owns his own land. This property can be handed down as an inheritance to his children. If the State owned all property, man would have no reason to work. A man would lose his natural right to a family and the care of that family. The State should not burden a man with high taxes. Taxes are necessary to help care for the community at large but should only be what is fair. Part V will addr ess the Duties of Wor ker s and Employer . Everyday Stewardship I wonder what some people think of my faith. Actually, most of my friends are people of faith, although not all, and I have worked in the church all my adult life. My circle seems small against the backdrop of the rest of the world. But, I never shy away from the reality of who I am and I know neighbors and acquaintances know about my faith and how heavily involved I am in it. I would hope at least for respect. But, they just might think I am certifiably crazy! With the dominance of secularism and the popularity of atheism, I would not be surprised. Spending so much time at parish activities and flying around the country talking about Jesus must seem like a tremendous waste of time. During Lent and Easter, it gets even worse. Paul explains to the Corinthians, “For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom.” Everyday stewards are foolish. If you are fortunate enough to have money, possessions, time for endless fun, and marketable talents, to talk about giving that all back to God seems crazy. But our detractors see only with human eyes. When looking through the eyes of faith, we see the greater reality. So Jesus thought he could rebuild the Temple in three days? He was insane! You think your daily walk with God will benefit anyone or anything more than running with the worldly pack? You are nuts! As the world seemingly moves further from God, our foolishness stands out even more. But that is a blessing, because now our foolishness is even more relevant and profound. Just like Jesus in the Temple, and Paul preaching of a crucified Christ, our active faith has a huge impact. So, especially during Lent, let your foolishness stand out. Maybe some out there who want to be fools just need some encouragement and good role models. When has the message of the cross not made any sense to me? When has it? Donate Your Loose Change to CSA Your loose change could make a huge difference! The Ladies of SRB have been asked to help raise funds for the CSA shortage. We raised over $ 1,900 last year. Help us beat that amount this year. Check under the couch cushions and drop those coins into our coin catcher. It will be in the church entrance after each of the Masses. Every Penny Counts! Ladies of SRB News Thanks to Suzanne Voss and everyone who volunteered to help out with the bake sale at the last Fish Fry. Kudos also to Rita Cheedie, Terri Renker, Katy Holder and the groups who have helped bus tables in the last few weeks. Great job, ladies! Our next General Membership meeting will be held on March 17th at 7 p.m. in the church hall. The Executive Board will be meeting today, March 8th, after 10:30 Mass. If you have any new business you want added to the upcoming agenda please contact Lisa Kirk or any other board member. The Ladies of SRB will again be collecting loose change for CSA starting this weekend. We are asking for your support to meet our CSA goal and every little bit helps. You can drop your change into the treasure chest located in the vestibule of the church after every Mass. So start checking your pockets, searching in your car console and digging in your seat cushions for that loose change. It all adds up! If you are interested in joining the Ladies of SRB please contact Lori Gerrity (Membership Chair) at 313-727-2519 or Lisa Kirk (President) at 734-421-6703 or email blkirk@aol.com. Third Sunday of Lent Page 8 Easter Baskets in the Dark Despite the loss of electricity, 27 women and young ladies came to the Church Hall on Sunday to assemble Easter Baskets for Redford Interfaith Relief (RIR). All of the donated items were placed on various tables and we went from table to table to fill the Easter Baskets. A note of cheer and Easter greetings was placed in each basket and the wrapping of the Easter Baskets began. Thank you to all of the parishioners who donated items for the Baskets (candy, small toys, stuffed bunnies and chocolate bunnies, etc.) and the ribbons, bows and cellophane to wrap the Easter Baskets. We especially would like to thank the Redford Seniors who donated funds so that there could be a chocolate bunny in each basket. As a result of your generosity 145 Easter Baskets will be given to RIR. Cardinal Sports News Three of our varsity teams wrapped up the season last weekend by participating in the CYO playoffs. Although they did not advance to the 2nd round, we can be proud of the fact that with over 700 teams participating in CYO this year, 3 of our teams qualified to take part. This is a quite an accomplishment considering the fact that only about 1 team out of every 10 makes it to the big dance. As of today, two of our JV teams are still in the hunt for the championship at the St. Anselm tournament. Additional information will be available next week. We are still accepting participants for our 2015 track team. As in past years, this will be our only spring sport. The spring season will begin in midMarch and conclude in May. Track is open to all parish students in grades 4 through 8. We have been contacted by one of our neighboring parishes inviting our 5th and 6th grade girls to play softball this season. Any girls that would like to play should contact the SRB athletic department as soon as possible for additional information. Practice begins in mid – March with the season ending in Late May or early June. Come be an SRB Cardinal Once a Cardinal, always a Cardinal!
