Acts 2.1-4 John 15.26-27; 16.4b-15 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. ‘When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning. But I have said these things to you so that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you about them. ‘I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, “Where are you going?” But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgement: about sin, because they do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; about judgement, because the ruler of this world has been condemned. ‘I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. Acts 2.5-18 Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, ‘Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.’ All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, ‘What does this mean?’ But others sneered and said, ‘They are filled with new wine.’ But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: ‘Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: “In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. Notices Credit Unions Thank-you to those people who expressed interest in joining the London Mutual Credit Union last week. If you took a form away with you and have filled it in, please let Ros Scott or Cathy Wiles know so that they can arrange to collect it early this week. This will be passed onto Theo Shaw of the Church Credit Union Champions Network (Diocese of Southwark) so that she can process them and get them into Lambeth Council who will contribute £8 plus the joining fee for each person who lives, works or studies in Lambeth. This initiative is a next step towards addressing issues of poverty alongside supporting the Norwood Foodbank. Ros Scott has prepared some notes on Credit Unions for people who might be interested in knowing a bit more about them. They are on the table in the Welcome area. Cathy Wiles Norwood Food bank is currently low on rice pudding, UHT puddings, vegetables and coffee. All donations are welcome. Help required There are 2 people in the congregation with significant mobility problems who are currently receiving lifts to Church from a very small group. For us to continue this arrangement more volunteers are needed. We would like to have enough people so that any individual is only required every other month. The theme is Growing in the Spirit and the Bishop's Certificate in Discipleship will be launched at the service. In addition to locations at Croydon and Trinity House, the Bishop's Certificate will also be offered at Holy Trinity Tulse Hill. Prayer Matters 24th May 2015 Pentecost Please keep in your prayers this week: Refugees – asking for God’s compassionate care for all fleeing war and oppression in the Middle East and South-East Asia, and for all receiving refugees and sharing the little they have with them. For all governments facing the difficulties caused by major movements of population, that they may act with wisdom and compassion in dealing with desperate and vulnerable people. The issue of growing inequality in the UK – giving thanks for the Norwood Food Bank and for those supporting it, for credit unions, and for all trying to help the poorest in our society overcome their disadvantages; and asking for our political life to be based more on concepts of justice and generosity. Ourselves—that in this season of Pentecost we may have the courage and humility to open our hearts and minds to the working of the Holy Spirit, that we may be refreshed and empowered, and that we may be guided by that Spirit to renew our journey to God in joy. Commemorated this week on 25th May: Bede (672/673 – 735) Bede was an English monk at the monastery of Saint Peter at Monkwearmouth and its companion monastery, Saint Paul's, in modern Jarrow, in the Kingdom of Northumbria. A skilled linguist, Bede’s work on translations from Latin and Greek made the writings of the early Church Fathers much more accessible to his fellow Anglo-Saxons. His most famous original work, Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum (The Ecclesiastical History of the English People) gained him the title "The Father of English History". It was for his theological writings that he was made a Doctor of the Church by Pope Leo XIII in 1899 He is also the only Englishman placed by Dante in Paradise.
