ASIYA SALAAM It’s with great excitement that I announce that Asiya Center will be closing for the next two years for remodeling. The Divan has decided to tear down the Center and rebuild it in the image of the world famous Taj Mahal. The project will cost roughly $150 million dollars……Not! April Fools! Now that I have your attention, there are a lot of great activities going on at the Shrine Center each and every month. Our Units and Clubs are very active and creating a good atmosphere for brotherhood and charity. I hope you have made time to participate and join in the fun. One of the newest activities at the Center is our 6 PM Thursday Movie Nights. Many of our Nobles have viewed a unique array of films. The movie night is truly becoming a fun evening out with friends. Movie nights are becoming a great snack “pot luck” event with people bring their favorite snacks to share. Our 80 inch Smart TV provides a wonderful viewing experience. Oh, by the way the St. Patrick’s Day Parade was once again a great day to be a Shriner. This parade continues to be one of the premier events of the year. We had a good turn out and a wonderful time marching and showing our community interest and support. Thanks to those who worked so hard to prepare our after parade meal. Last month we had Shrine representatives attend the Chamber of Commerce annual awards event. This continues to be an important outreach event for the Shrine. Next year our Arabians will be performing at this event. In April the Divan will be heading off to the WSA, in Las Vegas. The WSA is hosted by “El Zaribah”, April 22 thru the 26th. This does promise to be a fun weekend. If you’re planning to attend see our Assistant Rabban, Mike Dwyer for details. Finally, I hope you will mark your calendars and plan to attend our “Roaring 20’s Speakeasy Night”, Saturday May 23rd which will be held here at the Asiya Center. The fun begins at 5:30 PM, for more details see the flyer within the Salaam. Again, thank you to everyone who has been there support the Shrine this year. You have all been noticed and appreciated. Let’s continue having fun and remember it’s all about you; “It’s Nobility Time” and lets continue to bask in the sunshine of the Shrine. John A. Many think it began around 1582 in France with the reform of the calendar under Charles IX. The Gregorian Calendar was introduced, and New Year's Day was moved from March 25 - April 1 (new year's week) to January 1. Communication traveled slowly in those days and some people were only informed of the change several years later. Still others, who were more rebellious refused to acknowledge the change and continued to celebrate on the last day of the former celebration, April 1. These people were labeled "fools" by the general populace, were subject to ridicule and sent on "fool errands," sent invitations to nonexistent parties and had other practical jokes played upon them. The butts of these pranks became known as a "poisson d'avril" or "April fish" because a young naive fish is easily caught. In addition, one common practice was to hook a paper fish on the back of someone as a joke. This harassment evolved over time and a custom of prankplaying continue on the first day of April. This tradition eventually spread elsewhere like to Britain and Scotland in the 18th century and was introduced to the American colonies by the English and the French. Because of this spread to other countries, April Fool's Day has taken on an international flavor with each country celebrating the holiday in its own way. The Shriners departed for their Initiation Ceremony, the Ladies were having so much fun, they didn't want to stop. They surveyed the McClure Hotel and in a joyous mood, began to parade through the halls. They eventually arrived at one of the hotel’s conference rooms. The doors were closed, a guard was set, and within that room, with dignity and sincerity, and the first session of the Ladies’ Oriental Shrine of North America was held and Isis Court No. 1. The LOSNA is not an auxiliary of the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. Today, the LOSNA has over 16,000 members in 76 Courts across North America. The roll as called and many messages were read from those Patrolmen who could not attend. It was a great evening! On Thursday, February 19 the Patrol once again held their Annual Roll Call and Passing of the Saber. With over 30 Patrolmen and Honorees, the 2015 Patrol call of the roll and passing of the saber honored a time honored tradition that has it ruts going back to 1902, when Ill. Charles H. Murphy, Potentate of Islam Temple now Asiya Shriners organized the Asiya (Islam) Patrol. The 40 new Patrolmen quickly elected George Filmer as their First Captain. Under his leadership and at the 28th Annual Imperial Session held in San Francisco, in June of that year; the Patrol performed so well, it was made the first Unit of Islam Temple. Thus the Passing of the Saber and Call of the roll began when the Illustrate Potentate first handed the Ceremonial saber to Noble Captain George Fulmer. The tradition continues today, when Captain Barry Gwin handed the saber of authority back to Illustrious Kenneth Haukaas, who handed the Saber to Il- Congratulations !
