Steps on the Path to Sinai
By Rabbi Susan Grossman
How do we choose to do Jewish?
I say “do” instead of “be” because
Judaism is a religion of deed more
than faith.
There are important things we believe as Jews: that God (if we believe in God at all) is One, singular
and unlike anything in the universe that God created;
that every person is equally pure and holy regardless of
faith, race or creed; that we are responsible for owning
up for our deeds (there is no vicarious atonement in Judaism); and that someday the world will be at peace and
until then we must do what we can to move the world
from what it is to what it can be, etc. But it is not enough
to believe as a Jew. To be a Jew means to do as a Jew.
That goes equally for how we draw on our Jewish values
to guide our care and treatment of others and for how we
embrace and redefine Jewish traditional observance to
nurture our spirit and our connection to God and our
Jewish community.
How Do We Choose To Do Jewish?
Today, we have lots of choices, so many choices
that it has often been said that every Jew today is a
choosing Jew. We live in an open society. We are freely
accepted and can be successful without having to hide
our Jewish identity. We are lucky, for it has not always
been so. So what shall we do with this freedom?
come in its wake...performing that action consciously as
a mitzvah draws us into a higher level of dialogue with
the universe...we act not...from whim or because it is in
our interest to do so...or because it seems logical at the
time, but...out of a desire to communicate with that holy
presence...saying to that presence, ‘Hello God, it’s
me…’ As our practice deepens, our relationship (with
God) grows more intimate.”
Last month we began a spiritual journey on Passover
that lasts 50 days until Shavuot. We reenact the choices
our ancestors made to leave slavery and accept the Torah
at Mount Sinai. Their journey, and ours, is about taking
steps on the path toward a relationship with God. What
next steps will you choose? Perhaps it will include exploring your options at our Tikkun Leil Shavuot, May
23.
On behalf of David, Yoni and Pops, my best for a
sweet Shavuot. I look forward to seeing you during some
of our special holiday events to do Jewish together!

Rabbi Zalman Schacter-Shalomi writes, in his book
Jewish with Feeling: A Guide to Meaningful Jewish
Practice, “...Freedom puts the ball in our court. No one
– no rabbi, no therapist, no guru – can take responsibility for our spiritual lives. We have to do that ourselves.
If I want to feel a spiritual presence in my life, I can’t
wait until all evidence is in about whether God exists or
not. I have to begin with an affirmation...of what’s important to me. I have to make a leap. The promise of Judaism or any spiritual system is that if we make that

Springtime for Beth Shalom
Religious School
As the Religious School year
comes to a close, we have an opportunity each spring to celebrate
the accomplishments of our students and teachers. This spring is
no exception, and I hope that you’ll consider joining
us for as many of our end of the year events as you
can. We begin the month of May celebrating our Kindergarten and 3rd-5th Grade classes. The Shabbat service on May 1st at 8:00 p.m. will be led by our 3rd-5th
grade classes. As a part of that service we will have a
special ceremony of Consecration for our Kindergarten students to celebrate the completion of their first
year of Jewish learning. Additionally, Beth Shalom’s
Sisterhood will honor our 3rd Grade students with a
presentation of their Siddur (prayer book) as a part of
the evening’s festivities.
A couple of weeks later, it will be time for our
10th grade students to shine. They will lead the service on Friday night, May 15, at 8:00 p.m. as they
celebrate their Confirmation – affirming who they are
as members of the Jewish community. The service
will be preceded by a family dinner for all our Hebrew
High students at Rabbi Grossman’s home.
After we celebrate Shavuot over Memorial Day
weekend, our focus turns to the 7th grade. On May
31st they will host all of the younger grades to the Israel Fair during religious School hours. Parents are welcome to come early for pick up to see the amazing
projects that the class is putting together. The next
week, on June 7 we will honor our 7th Grade students
through the Siyum ceremony which marks their transition from Religious School to Hebrew High. That will
be followed, of course, by our always fun end of year
party.
Also on June 7th we will honor our teachers who
worked so hard to teach your children this year. To
many we will wish a happy summer and see them
again in the fall, for a few it will be farewell as life
takes them in new directions and new places. Watch
your weekly update for more information on the
schedule of the day for June 7.
As we near the end of one school year, preparations are already under way for the next year. While
some minor changes will occur as always, our focus
on and commitment to the best possible Jewish education for your child will always be the constant driving
force of the Beth Shalom Religious School. Thank
you for being a part of it, it was a true privilege to
work with your children.

An Interfaith Jewish-Muslim dialogue
Sunday, June 7 - 7:30 p.m. - 9:15 p.m.
Dialogue moderated by Rabbi Susan Grossman of Beth Shalom
Congregation, former journalist and a national leader in Muslim-Jewish dialogue.
The U.S. Confronts Extremism and Misunderstanding at Home and Abroad
Dr. Hedieh Mirahmadi, President of the World Organization for Resource Development and
Education (WORDE) and Dr. Matthew Levitt, one of the world's leading authorities on terrorism
From the lone-wolf attacks to the rise of ISIS, the United States struggles to meet the challenge of misunderstanding and extremism at
home and abroad. Our speakers will address two different theatres of American policy with two very different approaches:
Dr. Hedieh Mirahmadi, will discuss how the community-based program she developed in Montgomery County offers an antidote
to misunderstanding on the home front.
Dr. Matthew Levitt, will report on U.S. efforts to confront extremist groups abroad and to disrupt their international networks.
Working in partnership with the Montgomery County Government, Dr. Mirahmadi has developed the Montgomery County Model, a
countywide program that promotes social cohesion and public safety amongst diverse faith partners and county agencies. In a
fascinating presentation, Dr. Hedieh Mirahmadi will discuss the Model, which is being used by the Obama Administration as a successful template for a broader national effort in preventing violent extremism.
Dr. Mirahmadi is president of the World Organization for Resource Development and Education (WORDE). In recognition of her
important work in interfaith relations, she was appointed to co-chair the Montgomery County Faith Community Working Group, for
which she directs the Prevention and Intervention of Violence subcommittee, as well as holding the role of a board member of the
Montgomery County Collaboration Council for Children, Youth and Families.
Dr. Mirahmadi has also led several groundbreaking research initiatives to counter extremism in Afghanistan and Pakistan. She has
briefed numerous policymakers both in the U.S. and abroad, and has presented at conferences organized by the Department of Defense, Congressional Anti-Terrorism Caucus, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the National Counter-Terrorism Center, and the
Director of National Intelligence. She currently serves on the LAPD’s Community Police Advisory Board and as the director of National Intelligence’s Heritage Council.
Frequently in the media, Dr. Mirahmadi is the author of numerous monographs and newspaper columns. She is also a contributor to
the books Children of Abraham, (Yale University Press), Islam and Civil Society, (Ingram Publications); and The Other Muslims:
Moderate and Secular, (Palgrave Publications). Dr. Mirahmadi earned her Juris Doctorate from the University of Southern California, her BA in history from UCLA, and her degree in Islamic doctrine from the As-Sunnah Foundation.
Dr. Matthew Levitt is the Fromer-Wexler fellow and director of The Washington Institute's Stein Program on Counterterrorism and
Intelligence. He is the author of definitive books on Hamas and Hezbollah, a frequent commentator in global news outlets, and provides testimony to Congress and foreign governments. He has been instrumental in securing counter-terrorism legislation in the United States and the European Union.
In 2008-2009 he served as a State Department counterterrorism advisor following his 2005 to 2007 tenure at the Treasury Department
as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Intelligence and Analysis. Previously, he served as a counterterrorism intelligence analyst at the
Federal Bureau of Investigation, where he provided tactical and strategic analytical support for counterterrorism operations. Dr. Levitt
holds a bachelor's degree in political science from Yeshiva University as well as a master's degree in law and diplomacy and a doctorate from Tufts University's Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.
Copies of his latest book, Hezbollah: The Global Footprint of Lebanon's Party of God (Georgetown University Press, 2013), will be
available for purchase after the program.

Summer Shabbat Soiree Press Release 2015
Beth Shalom's 2015 Summer Shabbat Soirees -- our ninth summer! -- we are
ready to roll! Beginning July 17th, we will once again be getting together in
the homes of congregants on Friday nights for potluck (kosher dairy/pareve)
dinner-and-a-service activities, our synagogue’s delightful laid-back summer
celebrations to welcome Shabbat.
We are currently recruiting hosts. All you need is space enough to hold a service (lawn or folding chairs are fine) for at least 20 people, and be willing to
coordinate kosher contributions for the dinner. (You don’t need to keep a kosher home to do this -- just follow the guidance in our FAQ and use paper
plates.)
Hosts will be announced in the e-Scroll two to three weeks before each Soiree. (For those who don’t receive the eScroll, consider signing up, or check with the synagogue office periodically.) Guests must then contact EACH
host to sign up in advance (no later than the Tuesday of that week) and work out what they will bring.
For guests who don’t keep kosher (and/or cook), there are plenty of tasty commercially-prepared foods that are
kosher, even in ordinary supermarkets. If you want to cook, we have developed FAQs on how (and suggestions on
what) to prepare kosher dairy and pareve foods in a non-kosher kitchen. It is easier than you might think – but, as
there are different standards for keeping kosher, hosts have final say about what may or may not be brought into
their homes.
For those who want only the Shabbat service, you are welcome to join the Soirees after dinner because there will
not be a service at the synagogue on the nights we hold Soirees. Please contact the hosts so they can make sure
they have enough chairs and books.
Foodies, start polishing your recipes for this rare opportunity to show off your home-cooked goodies to the Beth
Shalom family. Everyone, prepare for evenings of fun!
If you have any questions, please email Barbara Pollack at blpsacct@gmail.com.

participation. It’s a mitzvah to make a Minyan for those
reciting the Mourner’s Kaddish. Please sign up now!
Even one night a month helps out, though more is
always appreciated. If you're unable to make your
scheduled weekly Minyan time, please sign up
for at least 4 other days.
