“I’m not ready,” was the common response we got when we asked people if they wanted to
receive Christ as their Savior and Lord on our recent dental student mission trips to Guatemala
and Dominican Republic. Often, when we share the Gospel, we expect and want an immediate
positive response. But research and experience have shown that, for most people, coming to faith
in Christ is a process that takes some time and sometimes repeated hearing of the Gospel. So I
explained to our students that when people answer this way, it is because they are simply not
ready. And when they are ready, it is obvious. We don’t have to try to force people into a decision.
On our last day of clinic, a man came to our clinic for the second time. Having missed the
evangelism station the day before, he made sure he did not miss it this time. He was so ready to
receive Christ that he could hardly wait! God had worked in many ways to prepare him, including
a dream and surreptitiously overhearing one person in his community sharing the Gospel with
another. So he told his story to our translator, who then turned to me and said, “He is ready to
receive Christ.” I had only introduced myself at this point. He was so overjoyed about becoming a
Christian that he wanted to hug all of us!
On these two trips, we were able to share the Gospel with many, many people as we treated about
400 dental patients who needed fillings, cleanings and many extractions. They were all delighted
to get dental treatment, and we were even more so to be able to show the compassion of Christ to
hurting people. To God be the glory!
