Kibitzer Publica on of Chicago Contract Bridge Associa on May/June 2015 Make plans to attend Fun NABCs coming to Chicago August 6-16 Carl Sharp 1945-2015 CCBA Past President and Board Member Carl Sharp died March 27 from complications due to esophageal cancer. Below is a tribute written by CCBA Vice President Jan Churchwell: 1980: Mt. St. Helens erupts, Ronald Reagan is elected President, and Carl Sharp joins the CCBA Board of Directors—that was half his lifetime ago. During his long tenure he was involved in most aspects of policy and planning. Something of an elder statesman, he had a knack for restating issues in ways that others hadn’t seen, and his “institutional memory” was prodigious. (Continued on page 2) Stars of Tomorrow Set for May 16, 17 The first of two Stars of Tomorrow 299er tournaments, will take place May 16 and 17 at the Midwest Care Center, 2050 Claire Court, Glenview. Mike Cochran, tournament chair, said that this is an excellent opportunity for those with fewer than 300 points to earn silver in a friendly environment, while playing against those with similar points, because the games will be stratified. Pair games will be held the first day, with Swiss teams on Sunday. The event is open to the first 60 tables each day. (Continued on page 9) The four star Chicago Hilton (above) will be the site of the Summer NABC. Do not miss this exciting opportunity-a chance to play in a national tournament without traveling far from home. The exhilarating North American Bridge Championships (NABC) are coming to Chicago, and will be held August 6-16 at the four star Chicago Hilton, 720 S. Michigan Avenue, two blocks from Lake Michigan and across the street from Grant Park. NABC for All Skill Levels This is an occasion for players at all skill levels, from newcomer to advanced, to play daily with others of their level from around the nation and the world. It’s a thrilling opportunity to observe some of the best players in the world. And, if you stop by the lobby bar after the evening session, you may get to meet and know bridge players from around the world. Hotel Reservations Players who plan to stay at the Chicago Hilton may go to a link on the ACBL website or call Travel Planners at 855-742 -9185. Rates are $170 per night. Additional information regarding both reservations and the tournament may be obtained at that site. The hotel is located near Chicago’s Lakefront, Grant Park, museums, and numerous restaurants. Other nearby hotels include the Renaissance Blackstone Chicago Hotel, 636 S. Michigan Avenue, a one minute walk to the Hilton, at $189 per night, and the Hotel Blake, 500 S. Dearborn Street, an eight-minute walk, at $165 per night. Offerings for First Time Attendees The ACBL North American Bridge Championships (NABC) has many exciting things to offer newer players and firsttime attendees, including a welcome reception; two celebrity speakers daily including Mike Flader, Audrey Grant, Jerry Helms and Barbara Seagram; free twohour lessons from top teachers, players and directors; a free Daily Bulletin; and (Continued on page 3) Remembering Carl’s sharp wit, hard work Carl served as President of the CCBA from 2009-2011 and ran meetings in his signature, low-key style. He also served on the District 13 Board for many years and was standing Vice President at the time of his death. Carl cared deeply about bridge in Chicago in the broad sense, as his countless hours working at tournaments attest. He helped establish the Joint Sectional tournament between the ABA (American Bridge Association) and the CCBA, and was CCBA liaison to the ABA. The ACBL recognized his contributions to Duplicate Bridge by naming him Volunteer of the Year for 2011. In addition to serving at local tournaments, he chaired the partnership desk at the last four NABC’s held in Chicago. He was a member of the ACBL Goodwill Committee. He held bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Chicago, and worked for AT&T prior to his retirement. Jim Phillips: Carl was the hardest worker in the history of the CCBA, something he would have laughed off. When I served on the board in the 70’s and 80’s, Carl was already there, manning partnership desks and contributing good ideas. Everybody who knew him felt they were best friends. Truly one-of-a-kind. RIP, BF. players saw him, they assumed that was why he was there. He instituted the Guaranteed Partners plan in 2009 at SummerFest. Stacy Jacobs: Carl loved playing with novice and up-and-coming players and prided himself on Carl Sharp never getting upset when it seemed partner had made a mistake. However, he frequently took a look at my dummies and announced “you're fired.” He continued firing me several times a day throughout his illness. Carl’s “firing people” alternated with “I haven’t beaten up my quota of white people today.” President Les Kent Vice President Jan Churchwell Treasurer Craig Gardner Secretary Tom Dressing District 13 Director Suzi Subeck When Carl passed by your table, you might hear “Couldn’t find anyone good to play with, huh?” Of course this was said to your partner, not to you. Somehow you knew that being “insulted” by Carl signified a successfully completed rite of passage. Board of Directors Craig Allen Angie Clark Mike Cochran Adrienne Cohen Jim Dressler John Goldstein Sharon Pobloske Joe Stokes Suzi Subeck Matthew Dyer: I’ll miss the way he relished addressing this white South African as “Boy.” Kibitzer Editor DeMaris Johnson While Carl cared about bridge, he did not take himself or anyone else seriously. His curmudgeon-like air, punctuated by a stream of self-deprecating quips, grins, cackles, and scowls, covered a gentle and generous nature. Although half his face was hidden by the inevitable baseball cap, you never had to look very hard to see the twinkle in his eyes, a gleeful grin, his tongue planted firmly in his cheek. Beth Staehlin and Sue Friedman: We went to Lake Geneva within a few months of beginning to play. We were overwhelmed, but having fun), when this intimidating guy, looking very professional, came to our table. He said “I’ve been watching you.” Yikes what had we done? He said “It’s a treat to see people enjoying themselves and not being all serious.” Carl was always present with a smile and kind words. Harriette Buckman: Carl wanted Fred and me to adopt him, thereby getting into our wills. He said of himself that he lived with three strikes against him - he was black, gay and Jewish, by choice. How? Around the sixth grade, his class studied comparative religions. He thought Judaism made the most sense, so he declared himself a Jew (nonpracticing), and that was that. Typical Carl! Thinking of how people touch and intersect my life often creates an image of concentric circles. A friend from one of your circles becomes a friend in “our circle.” Carl’s circles tended to be not only CONcentric, but ECcentric, and for Carl that made sense. Tom Dressing’s “Carlisms”: Mighty white of you; I wish I was rich and white like you are; Gimme $20. (Done willingly, and without a care where the money was going.) 2015 CCBA Officers/ Board Members Describing Carl and his inimitable style: Ornery sarcasm… icon… legendary… unique… color-coordinated shirts, socks, and pens. New Minor Forcing after opener’s same suit rebid Let’s look at some specific examples of bidding sequences and meanings: Opener(N) J AJ2 AK8653 By Ginny and Jeff Schuett Responder(S) Q Q KT7 42 N P S New minor forcing is a valuable adjunct to natural bidding methods because it enables responder to explore the nature and strength of opener’s hand without fear of being dropped. As responder, South bids 1and over 2 rebids 2 as new minor forcing to see if opener has three spades. North jumps to 3to show a maximum with three-card spade support, and South signs off with four spades. New minor forcing is a tool used only by RESPONDER during the bidding. It is most often used over a 1NT rebid, but is also used over opener’s 2NT rebid and a rebid in the same suit he opened. The problem New Minor Forcing solves is to make sure opener does not pass responder’s rebid, since responder’s bid at the cheapest level is weak and even a jump rebid in the same suit is only invitational. For example: Opener (N) Q Q Q N S 1 weak w/6+ N S invitational w/ As responder, South bids 1and over 2rebids 3 as new minor forcing to see if opener has a three spades. Over North’s 3, 4 is a cuebid showing slam interest and the A. Four diamonds shows A, and South uses RKC (Roman Key Card) to slam So how does responder bid with an invitational or game forcing hand, but a major suit with 5+ cards? How do you make sure opener doesn’t pass if you rebid your major suit to show extra length? Best to use New Minor Forcing concepts and bid the “other” minor if opener bid and rebid a minor, or bid your “better” minor if opener has bid and rebid a major suit, say hearts. It is important to realize responder’s minor suit bid is artificial and promises nothing in the suit bid, but is conventional to learn more about opener’s hand. There is much more to these bidding sequences, but they all use the concept of new suits by responder are forcing, showing a good hand, and asking for more description from opener, including showing a preference with three-card support for responder’s major. Later rebids below game by responder in their major suit are natural and forcing. Without a good major suit fit, these hands often end in 3NT. When the new minor forcing bid takes place at the two level, it is invitational or better, when it occurs at the three level, it is game forcing. The priorities for opener are as follows: For example: Win Silver during STaC May 4-10 N Responder (S) N S 4NT, etc . Players have the opportunity to win sectionally rated silver points during both daytime and evenings at their favorite local clubs during the Spring Sectional Tournaments at Clubs (STaC), which runs slated from May 4-10. S = NMF, because at the two level, shows 11+ HCP The more tables participating throughout the District 13 Chicago area, the greater the awards will be. All clubs throughout the Chicago area are invited to participate. 1. With four cards in the other major, rebid that major, so with QK8432 opener rebids 2 and if responder is not interested in hearts, he can rebid 2 to show 5+ spade suit and an invitational hand, or bid 3 to show 6+ spade suit and a game forcing hand. All Open Pairs are stratified 0-750, 750-2000, and unlimited masterpoints. Intermediate/Newcomer games are also offered. For more information, call any club owner or manager for details, including entry fees and partnership arrangements. 2. With three cards in responder’s major and minimum, show responder a preference, so with KJ9 4 Q72 AQ9852 opener rebids 2. 3. With three cards in responder’s major and maximum, show responder a jump preference, so with KJ9 4 A72 AQ9852 opener rebids Without three cards in responder’s major, opener can rebid 2NT with stopper(s). So with 9 AJ4 QT7 AJT832, opener can rebid 2NT. Without any of the above, opener makes his most descriptive bid, knowing partner has a pretty good hand. 4 District 13 Spring Regional April 27-May 3, 2015 Grand Geneva Resort and Spa, Lake Geneva, WI on Route 50, 1/2 mile East of Route 12 Call 262-248-8811/800-558-3417 on or before March 30 to insure the bridge rate Monday, April 27 2:30, 7:30 Stratified Pairs to benefit the ACBL Grass Roots Fund 7:30 KO Teams I: Session 1 7:30 Single Session Stratified Pairs Side Game Tournament Chair: Marilynn Charlson 262-490-2644 email: mcharlson@wi.rr.com Newsletter Editor Suzi Subeck stansubeck@prodigy.net I/N Chair Lynette Koski ikoski81@81@gmail.com Hospitality Chair Mike Cochran Tuesday, April 28 9:30, 2:00, 7:30 Side Game Series I: Sessions 1, 2, 3 (single sessions) 9:30, 2:00, 7:30 Player’s Choice* Pairs (Stratified) 9:30, 2:00 299er Pairs Single Session) 9:30, 2:00, 7:30 KO Teams I: Sessions 2, 3, 4 2:00, 7:30 KO II: Sessions 1 & 2 7:30 Evening Swiss Teams Wednesday, April 29 9:30 Compact KO: Sessions 1 & 2 (to conclude on Thursday morning) 9:30, 2:00, 7:30 Side Game Series I: Sessions 4, 5, 6 (single sessions) 9:30, 2:00, 7:30 Player’s Choice* Pairs (Stratified) 9:30, 2:00 299er Pairs (single sessions) 2:00, 7:30 KO II: Sessions 3 & 4 2:00, 7:30 KO III: Sessions 1 & 2 7:30 Evening Swiss Teams cochram1@yahoo.com Thursday, April 30 9:30 Compact KO: Sessions 3 & 4 9:30, 2:00 299er Pairs (single sessions) 9:30, 2:00, 7:30 Side Game Series II: Sessions 1, 2, 3 (single sessions) 9:30 & 2:00 Stratified Daylight Senior Pairs 2:00 & 7:30 KO III: Sessions 3 & 4 2:00 & 7:30 Stratified Swiss Team 7:30 Evening Swiss Teams Intermediate & Newcomer Events 0-299 Masterpoints 0-5 ACBL members play FREE all week I/N events...ONLY $7 per session Friday, May 1 9:30 Swiss Teams: Session 1 (to conclude on Saturday morning) 9:30, 2:00, 7:30 Side Game Series II: Sessions 4, 5, 6 (single sessions) 2:00 & 7:30 KO IV: Session 1 & 2 9:30, 2:00 & 7:30 Player’s Choice Stratiflighted Pairs* (0-1500, 1500-3000, 3000+) 9:30, 2:00 & 7:30 Player’s Choice Gold Rush Pairs* (0-100, 100-300, 300-750) 7:30 Evening Swiss Teams Saturday, May 2 9:30 Swiss Teams: Session 2 9:30, 2:00, 7:30 Side Game Series III: Sessions 1, 2, 3 (single sessions) 2:00 & 7:30 KO IV: Session 3 & 4 9:30, 2:00 & 7:30 Player’s Choice Stratiflighted Pairs* (0-1500, 1500-3000, 3000+) 9:30, 2:00 & 7:30 Player’s Choice Gold Rush Pairs* 0-100, 100-300, 300-750) 7:30 Evening Swiss Teams Tuesday-Thursday Single Session Games at 9:30, 2:00 Stra fied 299er Pairs Fresh Fruit Nightly Hospitality Suite Daily Bulletins Students play for half price with valid student ID card! I’m no different. When a situation arises that hasn’t come up in a year or two, I’m going to have a problem. Even assuming I remember what I play in this situation, am I playing with one of the people that plays it as well? Most players choose to ignore these less common conventions rather than risk a catastrophe at an inopportune time. It’s always important to know when you add a convention, just what natural bid you are abandoning, and whether or not it is valuable. In this case, abandoning the natural, invitational 2NT when you hold a good eight or nine points is simply too costly, so you will need another way to invite with those hands. We are going to give something up, but an invitational 2NT will not be what it is. What we will give up is the antiquated idea that when responder bids 2 ♣ (Stayman), that it promises invitational or better values. So here are our new rules regarding Stayman: 1. When responder bids Stayman, opener bids 2 with no four-card major, 2 ♥ or 2 with only that four-card major, and 2 ♥ with four cards in BOTH majors. 2. After Stayman, if opener bids 2, (denying a four-card major), a 2♥ or 2 by responder is to play. Opener MUST NOT bid again. (This is known as “garbage” Stayman. 3. After Stayman, if opener bids 2, responder bids game (3NT) with sufficient values. Responder promises that he holds at least one four-card major – else he would have jumped to 3NT without using Stayman. 4. After Stayman, if opener bids 2 ♥ or 2 , responder bids game (3NT) with sufficient values. Responder promises he holds four cards in the OTHER major – else he would have jumped to 3NT with- out using Stayman. Therefore if opener rebids 2 ♥ holding both majors, (#1) and Responder jumps the 3NT, opener can confidently bid 4 , comfortable that the partnership will enjoy a 4-4 fit. 5. After Stayman, if opener bids 2 , responder bids 2NT with an invitational eight or nine points. Opener must ALERT the opponents that responder may not have four hearts for this sequence. Since opener would have bid 2 ♥ holding both majors, (#1) responder need not worry about missing a 4-4 heart fit when he holds four hearts. 6. After Stayman, if opener bids 2 ♥ , responder bids 2NT with an invitational eight or nine pts – and fewer than four spades. Opener must ALERT the opponents that responder DENIES 4for this sequence. 7. After Stayman, if opener bids 2 ♥ , responder bids 2 with exactly 4 and exactly eight or nine points. I don’t believe this is technically alertable, but an actively ethical declarer will alert the opponents and (if asked) tell them that this sequence shows exactly 4 and invitational values. Opener can pass, bid 2NT, 3NT, or 4 depending on whether or not he holds 4 and whether or not he holds a min or a max. Seems like a lot to remember, but once you understand the purpose behind it, it all follows logically. The only two major changes from what you are already doing is having opener bid 2 ♥ holding both four- card majors (#1), and responder answering 2 after a 2 ♥ rebid to invite game holding 4 (#7). I contend these are simple changes, but by implementing them, we free up the 1NT – 2NT sequence to gain something quite valuable. More on that next time. Finally, let’s look at a number of examples to confirm we understand the concepts presented today. North (partner) South (you) 1NT ? aJ863 QT5 J972 K6 b) JQJ cJQT53 J72 8 d) KJ6 94 KJ942 T32 e) KTx AJ72 KJ7 J85 6 North (partner) South (you) 1NT 2♣ 2? f) JQ85 94 gKT96 AJ942 T3 North (partner) South (you) 1NT 2♣ 2♠ ? h) KT96 94 AJ942 T3 i) 94 KT96 AJ942 T3 North (partner) South (you) 1N 2♣ 2♥ ? j) AJ942 T3 kQ lQT42 T3 a) Pass. You have nothing to say. b) 2 The weaker you are, the more important it becomes to play in a suit. Transfer to spades c) 2 ♣ If partner bids 2 , you will pass. If he bids 2 you will sign off in 2 (garbage Stayman) d) 2 ♣ You have only invitational values. No matter partner’s response, you will bid 2NT which partner should ALERT suggesting you may not have a four-card major. (If partner rebids 2 , your 2NT should be ALERTED as denying four spades.) e) 3NT You could look for a 4-4 heart fit, but why bother? Your hand isn’t ruffing anything. This hand rates to take as many tricks in NT as it will in a heart contract. f) 2 Why transfer to hearts when you SAFELY investigate a 4-4 spade fit first? g) Opener needs to ALERT the opponents that you may not hold a four-card major on this sequence – even though you happen to have one. h) 4 You would have only invited (2NT) over 2 ♦ or 2 ♥, but with a fit, your five-card diamond suit it just a little bit stronger than before. Four spades is a reasonable shot. You hold: Jx xxx KQxxxx xx and partner opens 1NT Most of you probably know some way to get to 3 , often by bidding 2 and then correcting to diamonds. I’m going to suggest a different treatment, which will not only get you to 3 but also games and slams when partner has the right holdings. You’ve likely heard of them before: four-way transfers. To transfer partner to clubs, bid 2. To transfer partner to diamonds, bid 2NT – but that’s for the next column. Perhaps that is why you can find intelligent people like Warren Buffett, 84, and Bill Gates, 59, and about 25 million other Americans at the bridge table. It is no secret that most of those players are over age 50; many are college graduates with incomes of $75,000+. Midwest Care Center Stars of Tomorrow Set for May 16, 17 (Continued from page 1) The article quotes Keith A. Josephs, a neurologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. He said, "It is soft data that says, 'Boy, perhaps playing these games and being socially active result in better performance.' Patients are less likely to be depressed; hence they sleep better, tend to exercise more and have a better life in general. They do better from a cognitive standpoint." The author wrote that “Josephs stressed there is scant medical evidence that ‘playing any of these games is going to prevent a degenerative process or the onset of Alzheimer's. Rather, it might delay the onset of symptoms so that the individual can function at a higher level," he said.” Saraceno points to a 2014 study by the University of Wisconsin-Madison, which discovered that playing card and board games can help older people retain their mental sharpness. “Researchers discovered that the frequency of playing games is associated with greater brain volume in several regions that are affected by Alzheimer's disease. Those who played more frequently also scored higher on cognitive tests.” Robert Hartman, CEO of the ACBL, is quoted in the article saying, "There's no doubt anyone can learn (to play). We have a number of programs developed to make it simple.'' He pointed to the Learn to Play Bridge tutorial on the internet, the free computer software program, Learn to Play Bridge for beginners, and Learn Bridge in a Day®, a five-hour course.
