Please leave this booklet at the end of the pew. 14 Office of Tenebrae The Lord Jesus loves us and gave up his life for us. Few of us will be called to die the way he died. Yet all of us must lay down our lives with him and for him. If we would be faithful to the gospel we must take up our cross daily and follow him. - From the Constitutions of the Congregation of Holy Cross, Constitution 8: The Cross, Our Hope, no. 112 Rev. Peter D. Rocca, C.S.C., Rector, Basilica of the Sacred Heart Presider 15 Please turn off all cell phones and observe a spirit of prayerful recollection before the Office of Tenebrae begins. Office of Tenebræ Tenebrae is the Latin for "darkness." This service, originally the combined offices of Matins and Lauds on Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday, takes its name from the responsory, Tenebrae factæ sunt, “darkness was wrought.” Lamentations is a small psalter of communal laments over Jerusalem, following its destruction by the Babylonians in 587 BC. The first four chapters are alphabetic acrostics (with a stanza for each of the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet), and the fifth has the same number of verses as the alphabet. Each time the cantor sings the various strophes of the lamentations, the choir first sings a brief chant-like setting of a letter of the Hebrew alphabet in keeping with the structure of the book. The gradual extinction of all lights in the Basilica symbolizes the temporary triumph of the prince of darkness over the Light of the World, and the loud noise, or strepitus, at the conclusion of the service suggests the earthquake described in the Passion narratives. The single candle left burning is the symbol and promise of Christ's triumph over death and darkness. How lonely she is now, the once crowded city! Widowed is she who was mistress over nations; the princess among the provinces has been made a toiling slave. Beth. Bitterly she weeps at night, tears upon her cheeks, with not one to console her of all her dear ones; her friends have all betrayed her and become her enemies. Ghimel. Judah has fled into exile from oppression and cruel slavery; yet where she lives among the nations she finds no place to rest: all her persecutors come upon her where she is narrowly confined. Daleth. The roads to Sion mourn for lack of pilgrims going to her feasts; all her gateways are deserted, her priests groan, and her virgins sigh; she is in bitter grief. He. Her foes are uppermost, her enemies are at ease; the Lord has punished her for her many sins. Her little ones have gone away, captive before the foe. Deus misereatur nostri, Et benedicat nobis: Illuminet vultum suum super nos, Et misereatur nostri. We adore, O Lord, your cross; we praise and we glorify your sacred resurrection. Because for the timber of the cross joy came to the whole world. May God be gracious and bless us: and let his face shine upon us and have mercy on us. The ReproachesSanders O my people, what have I done to you? How have I offended you? Answer me! I opened the sea before you, but you opened my side with a spear. I led you out of Egypt, from slavery to freedom, but you led your Savior to the cross. I led you on your way in a pillar of cloud, but you led me to Pilate’s court. For forty years I led you safely through the desert. I fed you with manna from heaven, and brought you to a land of plenty: but you led your Savior to the cross. I bore you up with manna in the desert, but you struck me down and scourged me. I gave you saving water from the rock, but you gave me gall and vinegar to drink. Holy is God! Holy and strong! Holy immortal One, have mercy on us. I gave you a royal scepter, but you gave me a crown of thorns. What more could I have done for you? I raised you to the height of majesty, I planted you as my fairest vine, but you raised me high on a cross. but you yielded only bitterness: When I was thirsty you gave me vinegar to drink, Trisagion (Greek) and you pierced your Savior’s side with a lance. The sanctifying power of this night dispels wickedness, washes faults away, restores innocence to the fallen, and joy to mourners. -The Easter Proclamation Rev. Peter D. Rocca, C.S.C. Rev. David J. Scheidler, C.S.C. Rector of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart Associate Rector, Basilica of the Sacred Heart Presider Homilist 33 The Easter Vigil in the Holy Night In accord with ancient tradition, this night is one of vigil (Exodus 12: 42). We enter it as servants awaiting the Master’s return so that when he comes, he will find us wide awake and seat us at his table. The Solemn Beginning of the Vigil or Lucernarium The Blessing of the Fire and Preparation of the Candle All the meanings of light at Christmas and Epiphany are gathered here and given new force. The light of Christ has not only descended to our darkness but has descended into the far deeper darkness of death to lead us into the light of eternal life.
