PASTOR CAL’S CORNER
Dear Friends,
I can hardly believe that on March 7th I will enter my fifth year as pastor of Central Baptist. On the first
Sunday I quoted the theme of the Star Trek franchise. It’s five-year mission was “to explore strange new
worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before…” We
were just entering the Lenten season and I said we were on a journey together with God leading the way.
I look back now and realize that it was rather presumptuous to suggest that you would keep me for five
years, never mind the fact that you would be willing to explore strange new worlds and go where you had
not gone before. Those ideas are pretty scary in most churches.
Yet looking back over the last four years we can list some pretty good things that have happened here. Our
mission outreach has grown and now includes Operation Christmas Child, sending short term mission
teams, to bowling and walking for causes like WARM, Family Housing Support and Jonnycake. Never
mind the fact that it was pretty good before.
We have had some memorable sermon series thanks to the wonderful props created by Ray Marra, Rudy
Pelchat, Don West and Gary Engler. Who can forget the empty tomb, the Jerusalem Wailing Wall or the
Bethlehem Inn? I have had fun in the pulpit and you have played along by accepting the “commercial
breaks,” the little props in the pulpit and an occasional costume.
We have seen an increase in the number of children attending worship and have been called upon to be
part of the extended family of these kids who are so excited to be here. Yes, it has meant some
adjustments and accommodations but when you think about how Jesus loved and encouraged the children,
it makes me feel good to be able to welcome them to worship.
I could go on and on but it is enough to just say “thank you.” It has been quite a journey and I can’t wait
to see what God has in store for us as we head into the last leg of this first five years. It begins with our
Lenten Journey. We will continue to work our way through the Scriptures using The Story as a guide.
Due to the timing of Lent, we are going to jump ahead from Chapter 16 of the book to Chapter 22 which
brings us into the New Testament and the birth, life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus. I hope you
plan to be with us as we explore the heart of our faith in Christ.
I also want to invite you to join us for the commissioning of our Mission Team on Sunday, March 8, our
Wednesday night Lenten study series “24 Hours That Changed the World”, and the Easter Cantata that we
will perform at both First Seventh Day Baptist in Ashaway and Hope Valley Baptist on Palm Sunday
weekend. These offerings will prepare your hearts to make this the best Easter ever.
Be blessed.

AN EASTER PRAYER
O God of Easter, God of resurrection power,
Bring heavenly life to our earthbound souls;
Thou, who did’st call Lazarus forth from his tomb,
Call us forth from dead works, and let our hearts be aglow with immortal glory
and power,
Call us out of the tomb of hollow profession,
Of cold creeds, and wordy ritual,
And let Thy life abundant permeate and saturate our stagnant souls,
Bringing joy where there is heaviness of heart,
Bring peace where there is confusion’
Bring love where there is bitterness;
And may we henceforth live in glorious glow of
The Life which that first Easter poured forth upon a world of darkness.
And may we always be mindful of the Source of this life-giving power,
And come to Thee regularly to be refilled.
In the Savior’s name, Amen
Board of Deacons
The ice, the snow, the frigid temperatures, it’s a winter to remember (or maybe one you want to
forget). But it’s March now and March marks the start of spring. Nature re-awakening from its
winter slumber as the ice and snow melts. And like the spring, the Spirit of God awakens our soul
and makes us alive in God.
‘Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the
grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.’
1 Peter 1:13
Keep your heart in tune with God by remembering all he has done for us. Look to the beginning
of spring and all the wonders of nature; God is everywhere around us. Listen to His word by reading
the Bible, spend time in prayer, and open yourself to Him. When God is in your life your actions and
manners will be displayed for all to see. Your life gets easier, not that anything won’t go wrong, but
problems will be easier to deal with because God is there to help and comfort you.
‘Surely God is my help; the Lord is the one who sustains me.’
Psalm 54:4
So don’t let the long winter get to you. Lift your heart to the Lord and, like the coming spring,
feel His warmth and comfort and let Him make you a blessing and comfort to others.

Great News! We’ve started 2015 strong with the
surplus of giving of over planned over $4,300 and fewer
expenses than planned of almost $940, resulting in
being $5,240 ahead of our planned amount. This was
largely due to some annual contributions and having no
snow plowing bills in January, although, so the surplus
will be reduced next month when snow removal and
fuel bills are paid. It is very encouraging that we have
such a generous congregation and our prayers for no
snow in January were answered. Now, let’s all keep
praying for the storms in February to stop!

Prayer Team
The first objective of prayer is praying about
what to pray about. Prayer isn’t about outlining
our agenda to God; it’s about getting into God’s
presence and getting God’s agenda for us.
If you don’t know where to start, or if you
get stuck, go back to the Bible. Start reading,
and God will start speaking. That’s when you
need to stop reading and start praying.”
This will be part of our Wednesday night Lenten
schedule.
Come to the study alone or join us for…
a) Soup & sandwich at 6:00 p.m.
b) Worship at 6:30 p.m.
Sermons in March
We will be continuing our series of messages based upon the

God’s Temple
Matthew 10:8 - Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons.
Freely you have received, freely give.
A story in the short story book “Chicken Soup for The Golden Soul” caught my attention because it reminded me of
a recent event in my life. The story was about a college student named Julie and a terrible auto accident she was in.
After being transported to a hospital, doctors knew she would not be able to overcome and survive her injuries. They
met with her parents to advise them of this, and asked if they would give permission to donate her organs to others.
Julie’s parents answered, “Julie always gave to others while she was alive. She would want to give also in death.” By
this action on the part of Julie’s parents, a young mother who was going blind was given one of Julie’s eyes, thereby
giving her the opportunity to see her child grow up. A father of two young boys was in need of a kidney transplant
with only a short while to live. One of Julie’s kidneys provided the opportunity for him to see his sons grow up. Other
organs of Julie would give sight and life to other waiting recipients. The story now jumped ahead twenty four years to
a time when Julie’s mother, now in her seventies, happened to meet up with one of Julie’s college professors. As the
conversation eventually got around to Julie, and her tragic death, her mother said, “Julie died twenty four years ago,
right after her twentieth birthday. She left us with very happy memories. Nothing, absolutely nothing could possibly
be as heart breaking as the death of your child, for your heart breaks again and again. At each birthday, each holiday
and each milestone: When she would have graduated; when she might have married; when she might have had
children. But Julie’s life was a gift to us. Knowing that in her death she gave the gift of life and sight to others is
comforting to us, and remembering that we carried out her wishes has helped us cope with her death more than
anything else. Your teaching influenced her life and reminds us that our love for Julie and Julie’s love for others are
alive today.” The story ends with this comment from Julie’s professor, “I hold dear the thought that I may have had a
small part in teaching Julie how to live. But she and her family are still teaching me an even greater lesson -- how to
die.”
I had the same question asked of me that was posed to Julie’s parents when my wife, Mary, passed away a few
months ago, “Would I be willing to have her organs donated to others?” I did not have to think about this too long
before answering no. The answer may have been a selfish one, but I could not bring myself around to the thought of
her body being used for this purpose. Our bodies are temples created by God with His holiness therein. Mary’s body
bore our five children into the world. How could I have possibly said yes? I could have very well been wrong in my
answer, and I find myself wishing that I had the opportunity to have attended some Christian education seminars or
classes on the subject of organ donation from a Christian perspective. Maybe as a community outreach program,
Central Baptist should develop a curriculum of study to be used in answering questions about secular activities that
have ramifications to us as Christians. This was pretty much the question I was faced with; while understanding the
great need to help others – what would God want me to do?
2 Corinthians 6:16 – For we are the Temple of the living God.

Reaching Thin Air
The year’s at the spring,
Frank W. Boreham passes on a story told by Handley Page, the
airman. When Page landed at Kobar, in Arabia, a large rat managed
to get into his airplane. When Page was in mid-air, he discovered the
rat’s presence by the sound of gnawing behind him. Alarmed at the
thought of the damage which those pitiless teeth might do, the
aviator remembered that a rat is unable to survive at high altitude.
He determined to soar, and he rose until he found breathing difficult.
At length he descended to a lower level, and upon landing he
discovered that the rat was dead.
There is help for the tempted here. When we feel ourselves
endangered by the pests that molest our souls, we need only to rise
to a loftier level of Christian attainment.
And day’s at the morn;
Morning’s at seven;
The hillside’s dew-pearl’d;
The lark’s on the wing;
The snail’s on the thorn;
God’s in His heaven—All’s right with the world.

Who is St. Patrick
It is known that St. Patrick was born in Britain to wealthy
parents near the end of the fourth century. He is believed to
have died on March 17, around 460 A.D. At the age of 16,
Patrick was taken prisoner by a group of Irish raiders who
were attacking his family’s estate. They transported him to
Ireland where he spent six years in captivity. After more than
six years as a prisoner, Patrick escaped.
According to his writing, a voice—which he believed to be God’s—spoke
to him in a dream, telling him it was time to leave Ireland. To do so, Patrick
walked nearly 200 miles from County Mayo, where it is believed he was
held, to the Irish coast. After escaping to Britain, Patrick reported that he
experienced a second revelation—an angel in a dream tells him to return to
Ireland as a missionary. Soon after, Patrick began religious training, a course
of study that lasted more than 15 years. After his ordination as a priest, he
was sent to Ireland with a dual mission: to minister to Christians already
living in Ireland and to begin to convert the Irish.
