Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord
Dear Folks,
Every year at this time, great trepidation fills my heart and soul. Why you ask? Because
Deacon JD Williams climbs the great ladder, ascending the great wall behind the altar,
to place a purple cover over the great crucifix. Purple is the color of the penitential
season of Lent.
No one is certain of the origin of covering the crucifix and statues in the church but it may have to do with a
German practice in the Ninth Century when the ornate altars were covered in anticipation of a more simple
expression of Lent. They were covered on the fifth Sunday of Lent, when the Passion was read at all the
Masses. Hence the name for the season of “Passiontide.” Through the centuries various adjustments, due to
cultural interests have modified the practice of covering the statues.
Stained glass windows and Stations of the Cross were never covered. In Vatican II there was some thought of
banishing the practice of covering the statues but that never came about and the age old practice continues.
Like the noble prayer to St. Michael offered at the end of Mass the covering continues.
And now the rest of the story. Some good and pious soul lost/misplaced the purple cover from last year and
the good deacon’s child bride, Christi, spent hours on her hands and knees redesigning a new clothe and
sewing/ironing it to fit perfectly around the lovely crucifix. It truly was a labor of love. Well done.
Again, like the penitential season of Advent I have enjoyed listening to the choir practice for the upcoming Holy
Week ceremonies. They are just the best and offer a nice spiritual lift for the final days of Lent. Many thanks to
James Noakes and the wonderful choir members.
Somewhere in the next month or two we will have the Divine Mercy stained glass window set in the Church. It
would have been nice for Divine Mercy Sunday, the week after Easter, but I know that is too much to expect
from the good artist. The next window slated will be of St. Cecilia, honoring the parish choir. Stay tuned.
Please don’t forget to get your wings dusted for Easter. We will be in for business each night at 8:00. It won’t
be long. Fr. Moretti and I have been hustling with the grammar school and CCD kids as we race to Easter. One
of those little munchkins thanked me by giving me a gift certificate to Carousel’s ice cream stop. How great is
that? That is a first. Ha! Ha! Ha!
Many thanks go out to many of you who have been so generous to the Bishops Lenten Appeal. Here are the
current stats for your review:
BLA Flash Report for St. John the Evangelist Parish:
# Households: 1989; # Pledges: 472; % of Households Pledged: 24%; Amount pledged: $154,962; Cash paid: 48%;

ST. JOHN SCHOOL Just wanted to thank
the dedicated Pre-School staff for their efforts
in preparing the Pre-Kindergarten group for our
Kindergarten class. These children arrive at the
Elementary school with a skill set that is better than any
other Pre-School I have seen. They are emergent readers
and know calendar dates, numbers and letters. Thank you
Director, Julie Copeland, and all of your fine staff. Speaking
of Kindergarten, did you know there are 27 students
registered in Kindergarten for the 2014-15 school year?
That's right only three slots remaining! In addition, there is a
waiting list for our fourth grade class, with 30 rising fourth
graders enrolled. We graduate 24 eighth graders, so the
rising numbers are encouraging. Don't delay if you are
planning to visit our school for a tour. Students can shadow
classes to get a feel for the school. Hope to see interested
parents soon! Have a great week and God bless you! Art

“Lent is a fitting time for self-denial; we
would do well to ask ourselves what we

others by our own poverty. Let us not forget that
real poverty hurts: no self-denial is real without this
dimension of penance." Pope Francis
