ANZAC DAY

Gallipoli Oak Tree
Research Primary has received our seedling Gallipoli Oak tree (Quercus coccifera subsp. calliprinos) ready to
plant this week at our small Anzac ceremony at 11.30am on Friday.
The Gallipoli Oak “grandparent” trees were grown from acorns originally sent to Australia by soldiers fighting at
Gallipoli in World War 1. In a joint project by organisations including the National Trust and the RSL, acorns from
these trees were collected to grow hundreds of the unusual oaks. In their natural habitat the trees grow to about
five metres, are evergreen with spiny serrated leaves similar to a holly leaf which explains why troops described
crawling through prickly holly-like vegetation. General Monash wrote about the prickly scrub “with which these
hills are covered and which has inflicted many an unkind scratch on hands, arms and bare knees.” More
information about the oaks is available from http://gallipolioaks.org/
And a childrens ebook is available from https://gallipolioaks.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/the-gallipoli-oaks-storyebook-national-trust-of-australia-victoria.pdf

Well we were lucky with the weather and had a great afternoon for running. The students tried their best and
by the fifth lap for 11, 12 and 13 year olds, there was a look of relief as they climbed the hill to the top court
for the last time. Congratulations to all students for a great all round effort. Notices will be sent out later this
week for those who placed in the top 6 and an emergency runner note for those who placed 7th and 8th to
represent RPS at the EDPSSA event. The EDPSSA cross country will be held on Tuesday 5 May at Lower
Eltham Park in the afternoon. Many thanks to the parents for helping with the cross country: Libby Guest,

RESEARCH PRIMARY SCHOOL FETE - 2ND MAY 2015
SIGN UP ROSTER
The volunteer sign-up sheet is currently outside the school office, stuck on the window. The sheet is where
you and your family can volunteer to help man a stall on fete day. If everyone puts in an hour or so it
spreads the load and the same people do not become stuck on a stall for hours on end. We understand that
everyone works, have children involved in sport, gym and ballet etc, have family commitments and also
wish to spend some time themselves enjoying the fete day but please think of the whole school community.
A completed roster for the day, with a plan of the school so you know where stalls are situated etc will be
sent home before the fete.

WHITE ELEPHANT DROP OFF FOR 2015
We will be accepting donations for the White Elephant stall this week from 8.45-9.30am on Friday. Next
week, fete week, we will only be collecting donations under the school from 8.45-9.30am on Monday
morning. Any last minute donations will need to be brought to the gym, in saleable condition, on either
Thursday or Friday. If you would like to organise a drop off at a different time, or have a question, please
call or text Jacqui K on 0402 522 860 or Josie M on 0438 372 748.
On the afternoon of Wednesday 29th April we will be moving all the boxed donations from the storage area
to the gym. We already have one dad with a tray truck helping us but would appreciate another tray or ute
as we have a large number of boxes to move. If you are able to help please contact either Josie or Jacqui
on the numbers above. Also, on the morning of Thursday 30th April we need to get the stage sections out of
the container behind the gym. As these are pretty heavy we would appreciate the help of a few dads
straight after drop off to move them. Please let the office know if you are available or contact us directly.

HAMPER STALL
Thank you for all of the wonderful donations for the hampers yesterday! We had overflowing boxes of
donations from each of the grades to make up the hampers which will be made up to be sold at the school
fete. This was very successful for our 2013 Fete and with the multitude of donations, it is sure to be again.
