The person who is a “neighbor” cannot indifferently pass
by the suffering of
another: this in the name of the fundamental human solidarity, still more in the name of love of neighbor. He must
“stop”, “sympathize”, just like the
Samaritan of the gospel parable.

Pastor’s Notes
JESUS IS LORD!
Notes :
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
As we begin Holy Week, the words of the
prophet bears eloquent testimony to the attitude of Jesus
as he approached his passion. In total submission to his
Father’s will, Jesus accepted the cruelty and inhumanity
of his persecutors. Yet, so conscious was he of the Father’s love that he could embrace the prophet’s words: “I
know that I shall not be put to shame” (Isaiah 50:7).
What a wonderful example of how we are to observe this week and how we should reflect on the mysteries we commemorate. It is a week in which we are to listen to Jesus and learn from his life and attitude about what
our own lives and attitudes should be. This week will
benefit us to the extent that we become more like Christ,
who “emptied himself, taking the form of a slave… He
humbled himself and became obedient to the point of
death- even death on the cross. Therefore God also
highly exalted him” (Philippians 2:7-9).
The prophecy speaks of the Lord giving “me” –
in Christian tradition this is understood to mean Jesus- the
“tongue of a teacher” to sustain “the weary”- whom we
can understand to be us (Isaiah 50:4). In the liturgy of
Holy Week and in our personal prayer and scripture reading this week, let us listen to the voice of Jesus speaking
to us and let his word sustain us in our weariness. Jesus
heard the word of the Father. He did not turn his back on
it. He gave himself fully that we might fully participate
in the new life he won for us. Let us listen to him. It is in
prayer that we speak to God and he to us. In hearing the
gospel proclaimed in the liturgy and reading it privately,
we learn of his life and we desire to turn from our old
lives and let his divine image grow in us.
Let us make our own the prayer in today’s liturgy: “Almighty Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, you sent
your Son to be born of woman and to die on a cross, so
that through the obedience of one man, estrangement
might be dissolved for all men. Guide our minds by his
truth and strengthen our lives by the example of his death,
that we may live in union with you in the kingdom of
your promise. Grant this through Christ our Lord.”
As we enter into Holy Week, I would personally like to
thank all the members of the music ministry for their
dedication, effort and willingness to share their love of
the Lord in song. If you find your heart calling you to
ministry, please see Lori or Rob after any Mass. Rehearsals will resume the week of April 24th. May God bless
you!
“How Sweet The Sound” CD’s are also still available for
$15.00 each.
The Combined Music Ministry of
St. Raphael-Holy Angels
Cordially invites you to attend a concert entitled
“Journey to the Cross in Sacred Song”
This Sunday, April 9th 2006 at 7:00PM
St. Raphael Church
The concert will include seasonal music, hand bells, and
the Adult Vocal Groups. This is a wonderful opportunity to focus on the Passion, Death and Resurrection of
our Lord Jesus through song and prayer as Holy Week
begins.
We hope you will join us.
St. Raphael-Holy Angels Food Pantry –
The food pantry staff sincerely thanks all who gave so generously to our Easter appeal. Due to your kindness, many
families will now enjoy a complete holiday dinner. Without
your help and support, this would not be possible. Please
remember, in your daily prayers, those who visit our pantry,
as each day is a constant struggle for most of them. Our
guests include senior citizens, the disabled, the unemployed,
and the working poor. Due to the services of our pantry, the
burden of poverty is a little lighter. You do make a positive
difference in their lives, and God will surely bless you for
your generosity!
The next “Reach Out Saturday” is April 29th.
In Jesus and Mary,
Father Jeff Kegley

IN THE WORDS OF HIS HOLINESS
POPE BENEDICT XVI
Dear Brothers and Sisters!
On April 2 of last year, a day like today, our beloved Pope John Paul II lived during these same hours
the last phase of his earthly pilgrimage, a pilgrimage of
faith, love and hope, which left a profound mark on the
history of the Church and of humanity. His agony and
death were like a prolongation of the Easter triduum.
We all remember the images of his last Via Crucis on Good Friday: Being unable to go to the Colosseum,
he followed it from his private chapel, holding a crucifix in
his hands. Then, on Easter Sunday, he imparted the
blessing "urbi et orbi," without being able to pronounce
the words, just with a gesture of his hand. It was the most
painful and moving blessing he left us as the greatest testimony of his determination to fulfill his mission to the end.
John Paul II died as he had lived, animated by
the indomitable courage of faith, abandoning himself to
God and commending himself to Mary Most Holy. We will
remember him tonight with a Marian prayer vigil in St. Peter's Square, where tomorrow I will celebrate a Mass for
him.
A year after his passing from earth to the Father's
house, we can ask ourselves: What has this great Pope
left us, who introduced the Church into the third millennium? His legacy is immense, but the message of his
very long pontificate may be summarized in the words
with which he wished to introduce it here, in St. Peter's
Square, on October 22, 1978: "Open wide the doors to
Christ!"
John Paul II incarnated this unforgettable call with
his whole person and all his mission as Successor of Peter, especially with his extraordinary program of apostolic
trips. On visiting countries around the world, when meeting with crowds, ecclesial communities, rulers, religious
leaders and different social realities, he carried out something like a unique and great gesture of confirmation of his
initial words.
He always proclaimed Christ, proposing him to
all, as the Second Vatican Council did, in response to
man's expectations, expectations of freedom, justice and
peace. Christ is man's Redeemer -- he liked to repeat -the only Savior of every person and of the whole human
race.
In his last years, the Lord gradually stripped him
of everything to assimilate him fully to himself. And when
he could no longer travel, and later not even walk and,
finally, not even speak, his gesture, his proclamation was
reduced to the essential: the gift of himself to the end.
His death was the fulfillment of a coherent testimony of faith, which touched the hearts of many people of
good will. John Paul II left us on a Saturday, the day dedicated in particular to Mary, for whom he always felt a filial
devotion. We now pray to the heavenly Mother of God
that she help us to keep as a treasure all that this great
Pope gave us and taught us.

Dear Parishioners -
Please refer to page 6 of this week’s bulletin for the
complete schedule of all of our Holy Week celebrations.
This week, as we come together in gratitude and praise
for our Lord, may our “HOSEANNA” ring out with the
same joyful acclamation as when He entered Jerusalem.
We use these final days of Lent to prepare our hearts to
receive our Risen Lord at the great Eucharistic banquet.
