Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Lent is a time of spiritual renewal when we are called to focus our minds and hearts on heavenly realities and yield ourselves to God. As we do, God can transform our inner selves and renew us. From the transfiguration, we can discern important spiritual truths about Jesus and about our lives in relationship to him. These same truths can help to change us. From the cloud, the Father said to listen to Jesus (Mark 9:7)). Jesus is our teacher because of his willing response to the Father’s desires. His attitude of humble obedience saw its culmination in his sacrifice on Calvary, as his death blotted out all of our sins (Hebrew 10:9-10). Now, because of Jesus’ complete obedience to the Father, everyone has the opportunity to gain salvation through his death on the cross (Romans 5:10). The transfiguration reveals that Jesus is the fulfillment of the Old Testament as the promised Messiah and Savior. Our response is to accept and believe. As we do, just as Jesus was transfigured (changed and glorified) by the Father, we too can experience transformation. St. Paul wrote that as we look to Christ in prayer, free from any “veils” of selfishness and sin, we will be transformed “from one degree of glory to another” by the Spirit (2 Corinthians 3:18). This transformation is a continual strengthening of the divine life that God places inside us at our baptism. We can see signs of this transformation when we find that we want to be in God’s presence more, when we choose to do his will instead of our own, when we are able to exert greater control over the passions in our hearts, when we are more moved to love and care more for other people. Our response to God’s call to transformation demands sacrifice- to put aside our own fallen ways and allow God to make us more like Christ. Unless we die to ourselves, our experience of his life in us will be limited, and we will bear no lasting fruit (John 12:24). As we embrace Christ’s cross, we will find that any loss we experience is nothing compared to the glory of the new life that will be manifested in us (Philippians 3:8). From St. Raphael’s Music Ministry… We have begun preparation for the upcoming Lenten and Confirmation celebrations. This is a wonderful time to consider being part of this vibrant ministry. For further information please contact our pastoral associate Sr. Sandra, at the rectory, by calling 609-585-7049. [pastor’s message continued ] Jesus’ transfiguration reminds us that we are not changed by our own effort. It is a matter of our accepting god’s grace with humble, teachable hearts that seek to hear God and allow him to work in us more deeply. Be confident that God will change us; after all, he sacrificed his own Son to assure us new life (Romans 8:32). In Jesus and Mary, Father Jeff Kegley Pastor Page 3 Through her heart his sorrow sharing, all his bitter anguish bearing, now at length the sword has passed. Weekly Collection for Feb. 25th & 26th IN THE WORDS OF HIS HOLINESS POPE BENEDICT XVI Dear Brothers and Sisters: Last Wednesday we began Lent and today we celebrate the first Sunday of this liturgical time, which stimulates Christians to commit themselves to a journey of preparation for Easter. The Gospel reminds us today that, after being baptized in the Jordan River, Jesus -- moved by the Holy Spirit that rested on him, revealing that he was the Christ -went for forty days into the Judean wilderness where he resisted the temptations of Satan (cf. Mark 1:1213). Following their teacher and Lord, Christians also enter spiritually in the Lenten wilderness to face with him "the struggle against the spirit of evil." The image of the wilderness is a very eloquent metaphor of the human condition. The book of Exodus narrates the experience of the people of Israel that, after having come out of Egypt, wandered in the Sinai desert during 40 years, before reaching the Promised Land. During this long journey, the Jews experienced all the force and insistence of the tempter that led them to lose confidence in the Lord and to turn back; but, at the same time, thanks to the mediation of Moses, they learned to listen to the voice of the Lord, who was calling them to become his holy people. Upon meditating this passage of the Bible, we understand that to fulfill our life in freedom it is necessary to surmount the test that freedom itself implies, that is, temptation. Only if liberated from falsehood and sin, can the human person, thanks to the obedience of faith that opens him to truth, find the full meaning of his existence and have peace, love and joy. Precisely for this reason, Lent is a favorable time for a careful revision of life in recollection, prayer and penance. The spiritual exercises, which as is traditional, will take place from this afternoon until next Saturday here, in the Apostolic Palace, will help me and my collaborators of the Roman Curia enter with greater awareness in this characteristic Lenten climate. 1st collection - $ 19,885.84 School Endowment - $ 2,679.55 Children’s envelopes -$ Total - $ 22,706.24 140.85 Thank you for your generous contributions to your parish ! St. Raphael-Holy Angels Food Pantry In the spirit of Christian charity during this Lenten season, please remember those who visit our food pantry by purchasing just one extra item when you do your grocery shopping and donating it to the parish food pantry. We are always in need of all types of non-perishable food items, as our supply is depleted after each Reach Out Saturday. Monetary donations are also most welcome as they are used to purchase items that are in short supply. Upcoming “Reach Out Saturdays” are on Saturday, March 25th & April 8 from 9 to 11am. “On earth You have no other body but ours. No other feet but ours, no other hands but ours. Our eyes to show Your love for the world, Our feet to carry You to do good. Now You will bless with our hands.” St. Teresa of Avila We pray for all the deceased of our parish and their families: Rose Toth Ann Rhodes Eleanor Mycock Eternal rest grant to them O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. May their souls and the souls of the faithfully departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. {The Words of the Holy Father continued } Dear brothers and sisters, while I ask you that you support me with your prayers, I assure you of my prayer before the Lord so that, for all Christians, Lent will be an occasion of conversion and of a more courageous impulse to holiness. Let us invoke for this reason the maternal intercession of the Virgin Mary. VATICAN CITY, MARCH 5, 2006 Page 4 O how sad and sore distressed, was that mother highly blest, of the sole begotten one. It is a time to re-examine our lives and seek ways in which we can be spiritually renewed, looking always to God for guidance and His bountiful mercy. Our Catholic Catechism invites us to learn of and prayerfully observe The Five Precepts of the Church : 1] To attend Mass on Sundays and on Holy Days of Obligation and rest from servile labor. 2] To confess your sins at least once a year. 3] To receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist at least once a year, during the Easter season. 4] To observe the days of fasting and abstinence established by the Church. 5] To help to provide for the needs of the Church. Pray that we will all come together as a parish of God’s people to grow in strength of virtue during this Holy Season. ST. Protecting God’s Children® Online - A Must for Parents, Educators and Volunteers Protecting Children and Young People from Online Dangers: The Internet has become the new schoolyard for child molesters seeking girls or boys to victimize. For 2006, the VIRTUS® programs present an intensive one-day training seminar that illustrates the growing problem of sexual predators who target children via the Internet. The seminar will identify and then discuss the methodologies and seduction techniques employed by the child molester in the various chat rooms and on the World Wide Web. Additionally, the seminar examines the topics of child erotica, child pornography, and their use by the child molester. Lastly, the seminar explores safety techniques and software that can be used to protect children. Speaker: Robert Hugh Farley, M.S., a 30-year veteran of the Cook County Sheriff’s Police Department in Chicago, Illinois, presents this eye-opening seminar. As a highly decorated detective and deputy United States Marshal, Detective Farley has had over 28 years experience conducting and supervising all aspects of child abuse investigations—from sexual abuse to child homicide. Specific topics addressed at the seminar: • Historical background of child exploitation. • The evolution of the online problem that began in 1997. • The progression of child pornography from Polaroid photos, to camcorders, to digital cameras, and beyond. • The use of the computer, text messaging and the Internet in child sexual exploitation. • Web-cams, chat rooms, file servers, and the Internet Relay Chat (IRC). • Strategies for developing an online child friendly/child safe atmosphere in a religious and/or school environment. • Awareness of fundamental computer hardware, technology and terminology. • Techniques for interviewing the victim of online child abuse. • Identification, disclosure, and the special needs of the victim of online child abuse. • The situational child molester, the preferential child molester and the online child sexual predator. • The child molester’s online seduction techniques. • Child molester collections: child pornography, trophies, and child erotica. • Law enforcement’s reactive and proactive response to the online problem. The seminar will be held at the Diocesan Pastoral Center on March 25, 2006 from 9:00am – 4:00pm Space is limited – please register early Registration by March 11th – $25.00 per person After March 11th – $35.00 per person Send check made out to “Diocese of Trenton” to: Office of Administrative Services, Diocese of Trenton 701 Lawrence Rd.
