It is a sacrament, that is, an intervention of Christ himself who communicates to us the dynamism of His Love. Every priest is the servant and minister of the paschal mystery accomplished on the cross and lived anew on the altar for the redemption of the world. General Audience, May 12th, 1993 Page 2 Sunday, January 29th 2006 - Holy God we praise thy name, Lord of all we bow before Thee... Music Notes Pastor’s Notes JESUS IS LORD! Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Jesus taught with an authority and power that the scribes did not possess (Mark 1:22). Instructions in the synagogue were based on interpreting Jewish law according to the traditions of the elders. In teaching, the rabbis would relate and expound upon what others had taught before. The people were “astounded” at Jesus’ teaching, for he spoke with the power and authority of God (Mark 1:22). His words were prophetic, revealing the very mind and heart of God (John 8:28) in a way that was clearly understood. Jesus was manifesting himself as Messiah both in word and in deed. The authority of his teaching was reinforced by his power over the unclean spirit. All that was needed was a simple word from Jesus and the evil spirit was gone (Mark 1:25-26). Jesus’ authority was so complete that he forgave sins (Mark 2:10) and had power over life itself (Luke 7:12-16). He was not simply a skillful teacher or a clever magician, but spoke with the authority and power of God. God’s word is effective, accomplishing his purpose on earth; it is majestic and powerful, causing us to stand in awe. God’s word is vital for his people, showing us our position before the Almighty. His voice nourishes the deepest needs and longings of the human heart and is a delight for those who follow him. Please consider being part of this vibrant worship ministry! What a great New Year’s resolution singing and ringing in choir would be! Children in grades 2 - 5 are encouraged to sing in Cool Kidz for God Choir on Wednesday from 5:30pm- 6:45pm. This choir leads worship at the monthly children’s liturgy. Students in grades 6 - 12 are encouraged to join Heaven’s Echo which will begin leading worship at the Sunday 5:00pm Mass in the near future. Adults are encouraged to sing with the Adult Choir which meets Thursdays from 7:45pm- 9:00pm or ring with a bell choir [ Thursdays 2:30pm - 3:45pm or 5:30pm - 6:45pm]. Remember, to sing or ring is to pray twice. CD’s [ How Sweet The Sound ] are still available. Thank You to all who supported this project; your feedback has been wonderfully rewarding! The cost is $15.00 per CD and they make great year-round gifts!!! St. Raphael-Holy Angels Food Pantry Do Jesus’ teachings and works hold our attention, or do we quickly forget God’s word to us in scripture, in the liturgy, and in our prayer? The Responsorial Psalm for today’s Mass reminds us: “If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts” (Psalm 95-7-8). We can harden our hearts by thinking that God can’t or won’t work in our lives, by being more interested in our own affairs than in responding to God’s word, by laziness or passivity, by being afraid to allow God to work in us, or by allowing the cares of the world to choke out God’s grace. We must recognize who Jesus is and the importance of his word to us. Even the evil spirit recognized and acknowledged who Jesus was (Mark 1:23-24) but this provoked only fear and rage. Jesus is our personal Savior, a loving shepherd who cares for his sheep. His words are the joy and delight of our soul, our only source of truth, light and eternal life. In Jesus and Mary, Father Jeff Kegley Pastor From St. Raphael’s Music Ministry… Oh God, when I have food, help me to remember the hungry And when I have work, Help me to remember the jobless. When I have a warm home, Help me to remember the homeless And when I am without pain, Help me to remember those who suffer. And remembering, dear Lord, Help to shatter my indulgence, And awaken my compassion. Lastly, make me concerned enough To help in word and deed, Those who cry out for what I take for granted. Amen Please continue to support our parish food pantry and remember, in your prayers, those who visit. Upcoming “Reach Out Saturdays” are on Saturday, Feb. 4th & 18th from 9 to 11am. Page 3 All on earth Thy scepter claim, all in heav’n above adore thee... You may call the Parish Rectory at 585-7049 if you would like to make an offering of candles or flowers in memory of your loved one. IN THE WORDS OF HIS HOLINESS POPE BENEDICT XVI Dear Brothers and Sisters! This Sunday is celebrated in the midst of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, which takes place every year from Jan. 18-25. It is an initiative, born at the beginning of the past century, which has undergone a positive development, increasingly becoming an ecumenical point of reference, in which Christians of the various confessions worldwide pray and reflect on the same biblical text. The passage chosen this year is taken from chapter 18 of Matthew's Gospel, which refers to some of the teachings of Jesus that affect the community of disciples. Among other things, it affirms: "If two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am in the midst of them" (Matthew 18:19-20). St. Raphael’s Altar Candle this week… In Loving Memory of Josephine Picardi Requested by Robert & Jean Clark In Thanksgiving Requested by M/M Paul Zimmer Holy Angels Altar Candle this week… In Loving Memory of Frederick S. McKee Requested by Judie Blanche Please pray for the deceased of our parish and their families - These words of the Lord Jesus infuse much confidence and hope! In particular, they invite Christians to ask God together for that full unity among them, for which Christ himself, with heartfelt insistence, prayed to the Father during the Last Supper (cf. John 17:11,21,23). We understand, therefore, the reason why it is so important that we, Christians, invoke the gift of unity with persevering constancy. If we do so with faith, we can be sure that our request will be heard. We do not know when or how, as it is not for us to know, but we must not doubt that one day we will be "one," as Jesus and the Father are united in the Holy Spirit. The prayer for unity is the soul of the ecumenical movement, which, thanks be to God, advances throughout the world. Of course difficulties and trials are not lacking, but these also have their spiritual usefulness, as they drive us to have patience and perseverance and to grow in fraternal charity. God is love and only if we are converted to him and accept his Word will we all be united in the one Mystical Body of Christ. The expression, "God is love," in Latin "Deus Caritas Est," is the title of my first encyclical, which will be published next Wednesday, Jan. 25, feast of the Conversion of St. Paul. I am happy it coincides with the conclusion of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. On that day, I will go to St. Paul's Basilica to preside at Vespers, in which representatives of other churches and ecclesial communities will take part. May the Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, intercede for us.
