Susan Helmer - Silk Painter
Guest Artist
The Fremont Art Association is excited to have Susan Helmer be
the Guest Artist on Wednesday, November 5.
As a child, Susan was introduced to art through classes sat the
Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. All she
remembers from those classes are an image of huge bottles of
brightly colored tempera paint lined up on a window sill and the
huge lions that still line the path to the museum. While attending
San Jose State University, she
earned a minor in art with an
emphasis on crafts, especially
textiles. Later, Susan studied
bead design from Helen Dietze
and was hooked on creating
jewelry from beads. Design
principles learned at the
university helped Susan create
interesting art work using
beads.
While on vacation in
Washington about 12 years ago,
Susan attended a silk
painting class. She fell in
love with silk painting the
minute she saw the
incredibly intense colors
spread like magic on the
silk. Susan gave away all
her watercolor supplies and
started silk painting! Now
she incorporates her love
of textiles and beads into
silk paintings.
Currently she is
experimenting with the addition of Sashiko quilting to her pieces
using silk thread.
On November 5 Susan will demonstrate silk painting the first part
of the meeting. Then she will give all in attendance the opportunity
to create their own silk painted ornament to take home. The
meeting will start at 7:00 p.m. and the public is invited. The
Fremont Art Association gallery is located at 37697 Niles Blvd.,
near J Street and Niles Blvd in Fremont.

Our 49th Fine Art
Show
My thanks and appreciation goes out
to each and every person whose
contribution makes this year's Fine Art
Show such a success! The outpouring
of creative talent is exceptional and I
treasure the wealth of artistry that fills
all space in the Gallery. Had we more
gallery space, we could have filled it!
Our 49th Annual Fine Art Show was
my first experience with an event of
this proportion and has proven to be a
great learning opportunity shared with
many wonderful volunteers who
stepped up and performed in an
outstanding capacity.
I’m forever grateful for the support,
recommendations and teamwork that
brought about the success of a

magnificent show that honors and
celebrates our community of artists.
The FAS Awards Reception packed a
full house! Experiencing the
enjoyment and cheer being exchanged
and the brilliant talent on display
throughout the gallery was a grand
vision. I treasure the opportunity of
meeting many new artists, our Gallery
being filled to capacity with juried fine
art and our FAS reception overflowing
with attendees. It was a joy to behold,
especially with the exchange of smiles
throughout the event.
Again, thank you everyone!

Our thanks to our Ways & Means Director, Marc Fowler, for his steadfast

To all of you camera buffs....
I am the FAA historian and continue to keep up our scrapbooks of club activities and
members.
It is good that some of you post to FB and the FAA website.
I would appreciate if you would forward some photos to me for the scrapbook.
Perhaps one day someone will be able and willing to put our history on our web page.
Until then I will continue to cut and paste.
Thanks in advance for your help.

We are officially speeding toward the holidays. So much to do;
so little time!!! There are lots of activities in the gallery, too. The
Fine Art Show is quite beautiful and if you haven’t gotten in to
see it, please make the effort. There are 129 pieces of art from
80 artists and we thank everyone who helped put it together and
who attended the reception. A first in the Fine Art Show is a
piece of fiber art in the 3-dimensional category. This came from
one of the regulars at the Fiber Arts Group (meets every
Thursday, 1:00 to 4:00 pm). There were about 150 people at the
reception and it was wonderful. A special “thank you” to Susan
Helmer who volunteered to set up and oversee the reception. It
was wonderful, Susan!
Susan Helmer will be decorating one of the gallery windows for
Day of the Dead. Look for her artistry from about October 27th
through November 5th.
We will have a mini-show for Halloween, with receiving on
October 20th. This mini-show will run through November 2nd.
The price for entering this mini-show will be $5 for members.

Once again we want to thank everyone who helps at the gallery.
We appreciate your generosity with your time and talents.

VOL 34 No 10 OCTOBER 2014
Dear Artists and Members of our
Community,
This year the Sun Gallery is doing
things a little differently for our annual
Day of the Dead Exhibition. We want to
get back to honoring those who are
passing from this world into the next
and those that have transitioned
completely. We are inviting you to either
propose an altar of your own (please
provide very specific details), or to bring
an item to place on the three altars the
Sun Gallery will be constructing for
community use. These altars will be:
1. Altar for the Ancestors : (friends,
family, relatives, revered ones, who
have departed this world and moved on
to the next).
2. Altar for the Animals : (pets,
companion animals, significant nonhuman spirits that have touched your
lives and moved on to the next).
3. Altar for the Earth : (the beautiful
places, endangered species, buildings
and temples destroyed by war, objects,
art and environments lost and gone
forever).
As this is an unconventional exhibition
we will be documenting the growth of
these altars over the course of the
exhibition dates. This means that none
of the altars will be complete at the
beginning of the exhibition but will be
added to, and evolve, as the show
progresses. This will culminate in two
events. Firstly, we will have an evening
of quiet meditation with candle lighting
and silent offerings. The second event
will be our family friendly community
afternoon with traditional folklorico
dancing, Aztec dancers, fantastic food
and face painting.(Dates to be
announced).
Guidelines for Submitting a Proposal
for an Altar
School and Community Groups are
strongly encouraged to Submit
Proposals
Although your altar need not be
completed at the date of exhibition
opening, if you are constructing an altar,
all construction of the basic
substructure and superficial covering
must be completed by the opening day
of the exhibition. The Sun Gallery
requires the following:
Detailed sketch of proposed altar
Details of materials to be used and
theme for proposed altar
Names of individuals or organizations
contributing materials and objects for
the altar
Submission fee of $45,00 (Members),
$65.00 non - Members, this includes
Membership dues
Important Dates to Note:
Last day to propose an Altar :
Wednesday October 1, 2014
Drop off and on-going installation of
accepted altars and items for
Community Altars, begins Thursday
October 2nd during Gallery hours,
11:00am - 5:00pm
Community Reception (afternoon) 2 6:00pm (date to be announced)
