Fr. Joe’s Notes
My dear friends,
We are coming to the end of Advent and
preparing to celebrate Christmas this week. I do
hope and pray that we all have a moment to stop
and reflect upon this great gift given to us. I
know, I know…we all have so much to do. But
why are we running? The Christmas season exists because the Son of God was born to share
our humanity and free us from sin. Surely we
can spare a moment to thank God for the abundant grace we receive. So take one minute to
stop and thank God.
What would happen if Mary were too
busy to listen to the Angel Gabriel? What if she
said that she had too much to do and she would
get back to
him? We
don’t need
to worry
about that,
because
when approached
by God,
Mary
stopped
and listened. She
didn’t fully grasp all that would happen, but she
still said yes to God’s call. In all that happened,
she was able to reflect in her heart on the things
happening in her life. As our model in faith, we
are called to do the same.
As we draw nearer to Christmas, reflect
in your own heart what Jesus means to you.

What are the blessings the Lord brings you?
How does he help you in your life? What do you
want to say to him? If we take a moment to reflect on what is happening in our hearts, it will
fill this coming Christmas season with new
meaning and joy.
I hope and pray that all of you have a
most joyous Christmas Season!
Joyfully yours in Christ, Fr. Joe

Ask Father
?
Question: Why do we light candles on a
wreath for Advent?
Answer: It’s one of those things we do every
year, but we often don’t ask why. Advent
wreaths are powerful symbols of our faith.
First of all, a wreath is something that has no
beginning and no end. It reminds us that God
is eternal and in heaven we will rejoice with
the Lord forever. We usually decorate that
wreath with various evergreens that speak of
eternal life. You can use laurel leaves to tell
of Christ’s victory over death. Pine and yew
branches speak of immortality of the soul. Cedar is a symbol of strength and healing. The
holly is a particularly special Advent wreath
favorite. Not only do the evergreen leaves tell
of life eternal with God, but the prickly leaves
remind us of the crown of thorns Christ wore
at the Passion to free us from sins. An old
English legend says that the holly was the tree
used to make the cross, and the berries, that
were once white, were changed to red to remind us of his blood shed for our salvation.
Decorating the wreath with pinecones, nuts, or
seedpods speaks of the Resurrection. The candles being lit are a reminder that even as we
are surrounded by the darkness of sin, death,
and despair in the world, the light of Christ
grows ever greater as we draw closer to the
Lord. The days may grow shorter, but the
light of God’s love increases for the faithful.
Christ is the light of the world, and the light of
the candles helps us to see the closer we come
to the Savior’s birth at Christmas. That is why
we light candles on an Advent wreath, as a
powerful reminder of our faith in God and the
wonders of salvation in Christ.

Book Study: Made for Love, Loved by God
Eight Tuesdays from January 13 - March 3
10:00 am - Noon
On Tuesday, January 13, Sr. Patricia Cigrand,
ASCJ will present an eight-week book study of
Made for Love, Loved by God. Author Fr. John
Michael Cameron, OP, editor-in-chief of the
popular monthly publication the “Magnificat”
uses Scripture, literature, film, spiritual writings to open us to the mystery and magnificent
of God’s special love and to draw us closer to
that love. His insights clear away the misconceptions and obstacles that keep us from a closer relationship with the Divine. The donation
for this program is $40 (includes the book).
Film Study: God’s Not Dead
On Wednesday, January 14 from 6:30 - 9:00 pm
at the Caritas Christi Center, Sr. Patricia
Cigrand, ASCJ and Sr. Lany Jo Smith, ASCJ,
will screen and lead a discussion of the film
God’s Not Dead. College freshman Josh
Wheaton locks horns with his atheist professor
when he refuses to sign a paper affirming that
“God Is Dead.” The professor gives him a portion of three classes to try and convince his fellow students that God exists. Can this freshman match wits with this learned professor?
The answer to this and the subplots make this
an interesting and inspiring movie. The donation for this program is $8 (includes snack).
To register please call 203-281-2569.
BOX TOPS FOR

program. Clipping box tops is an easy way for
you to help our school earn money. Box tops
are each worth 10¢ and they quickly add up to

earnings goal is $1,200.00. To help our school,
just look for pink box tops on products, clip
them and drop them off in the collection basket. Mark the envelope “OLOV School box

ADVENT
THANK YOU!
We are grateful for the assistance offered
by drivers and planners for the distribution of poinsettias to a large number of
shut-ins last Saturday. You delivered, not
only plants, but our concern and holiday
cheer with the assurance of being remembered.
CONFESSIONS
Confessions will be heard on
Monday, December 22 at
Our Lady of Victory Church
at 7PM.
Advent is the period of time
when we reflect on our relationship with God and prepare for the
Incarnation of Christ. We begin
the new Church year with an emphasis on prayer and reflection.
In this time of waiting and preparation, the readings at each week’s Mass focus on the prophecies
of the Old Testament, the story of St. John the Baptist declaring that the Lord is near, and the words
Jesus spoke to his disciples.
In order to help us prepare to welcome “God With
Us” we ask that you take one of the inspirational
scripture quotes to meditate upon throughout the
four weeks of advent.
Scripture passages are available in the baskets on
the altar. We invite you to take time to hear the
Lord’s words, while focusing and praying with
these quotes in order to be truly prepared to meet
our God when he arrives on Christmas Day.
