SJV PASTORAL COUNCIL (PC) MEETING
Minutes — Meeting held on September 25, 2014; from 7:30-8:30 p.m.
A
:
PC members: Fr. George Sabol, Fr. Reto Davatz, Deacon Johhny Rentas, Deacon Frank Przybylek, Deacon Carlos Garcia,
Trina Burke, Lourdes Fontanes (Recorder), Paul Bleess, Sue Baird and Maria Laboy (Facilitator).
Representa ves from various ministries/guests: Karl Kuhlken, Chris Butler, Amelia Kuhlken, Julio Cesar Morales, Joe Calderara, Phyllis Major, Lori Dixon, Aracelis Aranda, Adolfo Miramontes, Frank Moran, Barbara Hallstrom, Frances Rentas,
Peggy Lynch, Stephanie Talley and Olga Caubo, and Javier Cortez.
The purpose of this mee ng was to welcome our new friars, and to provide a forum for them to effortlessly meet the leaders
of the various ministries. Introduc ons made by all in a endance, as follows:
Fr. George, who arrived at SJV on September 23, shared that he has lived in several states in the U.S., and also in Canada,
Costa Rica and Brazil.
Fr. Reto has been in SJV for a few weeks now, he comes from Canada. He has been a friar since 2004, and an ordained
priest for three years. He is assigned to Blessed Trinity High School, but will be a weekend assistant at SJV.
Each of the ministry leaders had a brief opportunity to introduce themselves, sta ng how long they have been ac ve in
the parish, and describing their ministry. Eighteen ministries were represented.
N
(
):
Minutes of the PC mee ng held April 28 were approved, following a correc on by Deacon Frank, who stated a Building Commi ee is not ac ve, and that there is a need to find out what exactly was submi ed on behalf of SJV to the Archdioceses
this summer, so that our new Pastor can follow up on this important ma er.
Ministry Rosters – Maria recently updated hardcopy SJV staff and ministry rosters, and asked everyone to look at such, to
ensure we have the correct names, phone numbers and email addresses.
Updates to the SJV Website and other Social Media -- Chris Butler has been hired as Informa on Technology Specialist, she
is also an ac ve member of SJV. She is responsible for upda ng the parish’s website and social media pages. New and/or
improved online resources include the following:

P
C
– Here you can find out when an event is taking place, the mee ng room that was
reserved for the event, name of the event organizer, etc. It is cri cal that anyone planning a mee ng or event at SJV first
contact the office staff at 770-941-2807, or email the parish at parishoffice@sjvpar.net. There have been instances when
someone who reserved a room gets to church, to find out someone else is using that same room. The online calendar
should alleviate these concerns, as now anyone can check out the online calendar prior to organizing the event; if the
room shows as available, contact the office and reserve it.

be posted to make the process more informa ve and easier.

– Informa on presented by Karl Kulhken, on behalf of Sharon Loiselle, Director of Forma on:
Tui on collected thus far is $17,000; and we have 200 families that are making par al payments or have not
paid.
Students enrolled as follows: 80 for Pre-K to 1st Grade classes; 228 for 2nd to 5th grade classes on Tuesday/
Wednesday; 134 for EDGE (6th-8th grade) including Sacramental Prepara on, and 139 in LifeTeen (high
school) on Sunday evening. Forty-Two are a ending Confirma on classes on Sunday at 4:00 pm; and 135 are
enrolled to receive First Eucharist.
As you can see, we are very blessed with these many children and adults enrolled for the various Faith Forma on
Classes at SJV, but it gets crowded due to lack of space. There is a need to address space needs for the future.
F
– Paul Bleess reported that we ended the fiscal year $13,000 ahead of plan, through expense reduc ons
and increase in weekly offerings. We are $4,000 short from mee ng our archdiocese appeal goal; however, we are
s ll missing $50,000 pledged that has not been paid. We have $569,000 between the building fund and capital
campaign fund.
R
R
:
Maria shared that she a ended a few of the mee ngs the Stewardship Team hosted this summer, under the
leadership of Fr. Jude Michael and Frank Moran. The Stewardship Commi ee has iden fied a need at SJV to
reach out to the younger genera on (various age categories), people from all cultures and walks of life, as
well as new parishioners. As a parish, we need to find a way to effec vely get the word out about the various
ministries, get people excited and involved. Frank Moran, leader of the Stewardship Commi ee, was invited
to seek assistance from the PC or other ministries to follow up on ac on items, issues or concerns his team
has iden fied. Anyone interested in joining the Stewardship Commi ee should contact Frank at
fmoran@bellsouth.net.
Sue Baird expressed a concern about many parishioners not finding out on the passing of a fellow church member in
a mely manner. It was stated that now that Chris Butler is keeping the SJV website updated, this informa on can
easily be disseminated. It will require that as soon as the office staff is no fied, or the friars, they advise Chris and
provide the necessary details.
Fr. George stated that he has been in other parishes where there is a Bereavement Commi ee. Upon the death of a
parishioner, members of the commi ee immediately reach out to the family to find out their needs so that the parish
can step in and assist not only for the funeral, but a erwards. They help the families select the readings and hymns
for the mass as well. Fr. George encouraged all leaders in a endance to give this idea some thought, to talk about it
with their respec ve ministries, and to let the PC know who from their ministries are interested in forming such a
commi ee. Contact Maria Laboy at mlaboy0565@gmail.com if you have ideas or name of volunteers, so that we can
coordinate this effort in the near future. Parish members at large are invited to get involved.
Our next SJV Pastor’s Council mee ng is to be announced soon, once our new Pastor gets se led.

28th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Isaiah 25:6-10a
Psalm 23
Philippians 4:12-14, 19-20
Matthew 22:1-14 or 22:1-10
In these last weeks of the liturgical year, our readings focus on
things associated with the end of the world. Isaiah anticipates a day when God will defeat the enemy and
host a great feast. He envisions this feast to be held on
Mount Zion, the mountain of Jerusalem, when the Day
of the Lord comes. “Rich food and choice wines” will
be provided “for all peoples” (v 6). A note of hope is
sounded when the prophets tell us that God “will destroy death forever,” wiping away “the tears from every
face” (v 8). For God’s people, it will be a time of great
joy.
In a personal note Paul speaks of his experience
of living both “in humble circumstances” and “with
abundance” (v 12). Because of “him who strengthens
me” (vg 13), Paul can face any trial that comes his way.
He goes on to thank the Philippians for their support
while he is in prison: “it was kind of you to share in my
distress” (v 14). Their generosity reflects a close relationship, witnessed in his opening words, “ I hold you in
my heart, ...partners with me in grace” (see 1:7).
The imagery of a wedding feast in today’s Gospel anticipates the Day of the Lord. For the church this
banquet represents the messianic banquet at the end of
time. The parable teaches us that it is not enough to
accept the invitation; we must act on it as well. Those
who were originally invited to the feast “refused to
come” (v 3) when the time of the feast was announced
to them. As a result the invitation is extended to others,
reminiscent or the church’s outreach to those outside
Israel.
For reflection: What is my image of the Day of
the Lord? Why is caring for each other such an important part of our vocation?
TOOTSIE ROLL DRIVE
Our Knights of Columbus Council will be
sponsoring their annual Tootsie Roll Drive
here at the church to benefit intellectually and physically challenged of the area.
The Drive will take place on the weekend

To The Parents:
We have over 130 Middle School and
140 High school students coming to
the EDGE and Lifeteen programs,
which is a wonderful gift.
This week at Edge w will discuss the story of Joseph
and how God called him to trust even in the midst of
miserable circumstances. We also talked about how
God’s gifts in our lives leave us with a responsibility to
give as well. Here are some questions to ask your
youth about the Edge Night:

That is great News but now we need
more Core people to help!

Adult Volunteers Are Needed

Those who minister to our youth are in
the seed planting business. These core
members can profoundly impact a
middle school and High School
youth’s spiritual and emotional development.
This can have a lasting and positive
impression on the youth into adulthood.

In what ways in our own family could we celebrate or
highlight the beautiful gifts and blessings of each
member better?
How are family members able to trust in God through
hardship or difficulty?
What are some ways we as a family can give from
the bounty that God has given to us?

PRAYING PACEM IN TERRIS: There is every indication at the present time that these aims and ideals are
giving rise to various demands concerning the juridical
organization of States. The first is this: that a clear and
precisely worded charter of fundamental human rights be
formulated and incorporated into the State's general constitutions.
Secondly, each State must have a public constitution,
couched in juridical terms, laying down clear rules relating to the designation of public officials, their reciprocal
relations, spheres of competence and prescribed methods
of operation.
The final demand is that relations between citizens and
public authorities be described in terms of rights and duties. It must be clearly laid down that the principal function of public authorities is to recognize, respect, coordinate, safeguard and promote citizens' rights and duties. (75-77)
