Next Weekend Is an Orange Sunday,
Feast of the Epiphany
Jan. 3/4 is an Orange Sunday. We will focus on the Feast of
the Epiphany, which is celebrated that weekend. In the narthex after Masses, we will hand out small bags of chalk and
prayer cards with instructions for families to bless their
homes on Epiphany—a Catholic tradition!

A Word from Our Pastor
Feast of the Holy Family: This Sunday in the Christmas Octave we celebrate the Holy
Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. This feast not only celebrates the holiness of the
basic family unit but reminds us that as members of the Church we form the holy
family of God. On this feast we reflect on the sanctity of human love, the value of
family life, and our need for the broader family of the Church. Being in Cycle “B” we
read the story of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple from Luke’s Gospel. The
story demonstrates the Holy Family as a family of faith, who strove to make God
the center of their family life. “When the days were completed for their purification
according to the Law of Moses, they took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the
Lord.” (Luke 2:22)
Octave Day of Christmas--Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God: While the secular
world has long forgotten Christmas by Jan. 1 and is in the midst of celebrating a
new calendar year, the Church is still celebrating and unfolding the mystery of
Christmas. Thursday, Jan. 1, is the Octave or Eighth Day of Christmas in which we celebrate the mystery of Mary’s motherhood of God. At the Council of Ephesus in 431
A.D. Mary was proclaimed Theotokos, which is Greek for Godbearer. Soon after, the
western Church began celebrating a feast in honor of Mary’s motherhood of God
on Jan. 1. This is the oldest feast in honor of Mary in the western Church. Mary is
the image and model of what we are all called to be: bearers of God into the world.
Mary’s example of obedience to the will of God challenges all of us to say yes to
God’s will. Through her Yes, Mary became the Theotokos, and through her the Word
was made Flesh. Through our “yeses” we too share in Mary’s role of bearing God
into the world. In our yes Jesus is continually enfleshed in the world and made real.
The Christmas mystery continues in the world through our yes to be Godbearers.
Jan. 1, Solemnity of Mary Is a Holy Day of Obligation. There will be two Masses for
this day. We will have one Mass on Wednesday, Dec. 31, at 6 p.m., and one Mass on
Thursday, Jan. 1, at 10 a.m.
Happy New Year: Thursday we begin a new civil year. On behalf of myself and our
staff, I wish everyone and their families a most prosperous and blessed New Year. May
God bless us all throughout 2015.
Christmas Octave: The two greatest Solemnities of the Church, Easter and Christmas, are celebrated with an Octave, an eight (Octave is the Latin word for eight)
day extension of the feast day. The Octave or eighth day of Christmas is Jan. 1. So,
please remember there will be Mass on Monday and Tuesday this week at 8:30 a.m.
Calendars for 2015: This weekend, with Holy Family Sunday, the 2015 Catholic
Calendars are available in the narthex of church. We ask that you take only one calendar per household. We want to make sure every family who wants a calendar will be
able to have one.
Thank You for Christmas Gifts: I extend my heartfelt thanks to all who have been so
generous during this Christmas season. I am so grateful for all the cards, gifts, and
Christmas goodies many have showered upon me. Most of all, I am grateful for all
the love everyone has shown by continually praying for my good health. Many of
you know I have battled cancer once in my life already. God has been good to me
by blessing me with health since 2005, and I am most grateful. There is hardly a
better gift than good health. Thanks be to God! Let us remember to keep in our
prayers those who are sick and suffering.
Rejoice, for we are in the midst of the 12 days of Christmas. May God bless all during
this holy and festive season. Next Sunday is the grand Solemnity of the Epiphany. May
God continue to bless all during this holy and festive season. I said it last weekend,

Paula D’Arcy, a writer, retreat leader, and conference and seminar speaker, travels widely in the United
States, Canada, and abroad. A former psychotherapist who ministered to those facing issues of grief and
loss, Paula worked with the Peale Foundation, founded by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, until his death in 1993. Today her work includes
leading workshops and retreats related to spirituality, writing, and women’s gatherings. Paula serves as adjunct faculty at Oblate School
of Theology in San Antonio, TX, and Seton Cove Spirituality Center in Austin, TX. Among her best-selling books are Gift of the Red Bird,

Having the Experience, But Missing the Meaning: A difficult challenge is how easy it is to never move past the small
story of everything that’s familiar to us in order to truly experience the universe as ordered to God. During the retreat, we will explore what it means to pass by things for years without really seeing them, until one day when we
begin to meet life in an entirely different way.

Our retreat will be held at the Fatima Retreat Center, 5353 E. 56th St., Indy, 46226. The cost INCLUDES a guest room at the Fatima Retreat

the cost is the same whether you plan to stay the night. We encourage you to prayerfully consider giving yourself a full retreat experience and
spend the night with other women from our parish. Register early as rooms are limited. Cost: $80 (checks can be made payable to Saint Matthew Parish). Cost includes all sessions, overnight accommodations, snacks and beverages on Friday evening, breakfast and lunch on Saturday.

The 2015 duty-day work schedules for Saint
Matthew at St. Vincent de Paul are out. These
are the Saturdays when we join other parish Conferences in
volunteering our time and efforts to serve the needy of our
community on behalf of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
At the Distribution Center located at 1201 E. Maryland
St.: Jan. 24, March 7, April 18, May 30, July 11, Aug. 22, Oct.
3, Nov. 14, and Jan. 9, 2016.
At the Food Pantry located at 3001 E. 30th St.: Jan. 10, Feb.
14, March 28, May 9, June 20, Aug. 1, Sept. 12, Oct. 24, and
Dec. 5.
We typically get good turnouts. Let’s see if we can enhance
this tradition. So grab a buddy, put in a good morning volunteering on some of these dates, help those less fortunate
than you, and get a glow in your heart. It’ll make your week!
Next Men’s Club Meeting Jan. 12
The next Men’s Club meeting is on Monday,
Jan. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the Community Room.
We will have a pitch-in meal and invite spouses
(or significant others) over 21 to join us. We will have the
College Football Championship Game on the big screen.
