CHURCH
Jesus spends the sabbath at
Capernaum with his first disciples.
There he manifests his extraordinary
authority as much by his teaching as
by healing the possessed and sick.
Thus, from the very beginning of his
ministry, his fame spreads through
Galilee. After Easter this region will
become the point of origin for the
Church’s universal mission.
Rev. Sean Weeks, Pastor
(503) 644-5264 / fathersean@stpius.org
Rev. Francisco Bringuela, Parochial Vicar

Rev. Peter Siamoo, Priest in Residence

Bob Little, Deacon
In today’s gospel Jesus goes to the synagogue and
teaches there. After the scribe’s catechesis on the Law,
Jesus no doubt reads a prophetic text and gives the
homily as he did at Nazareth (Luke 4:16). He provokes
wonder and astonishment in his hearers. Unlike the
scribes, who were anxious to explain the letter of the
Law on the basis of commentaries received from their
masters, Jesus speaks from his own authority. He
confirms that authority when he heals the man with an
unclean spirit. That healing gives rise to the question,
“Who is this man?”

ADMINISTRATION
NEW UPDATE REGARDING IRS
NOTICE FROM THE ARCHDIOCESE
The Archdiocese has just learned that the IRS is delayed
in issuing IP-PINs. Thus, you may not receive an
IP-PIN during this tax season, even though you had a
background check performed in connection with service
for the Archdiocese, a parish or school. The IRS will
continue to issue IP-PINs on a rolling basis. If you have
received an IP-PIN, you must use it to file your taxes. If
you have not received an IP-PIN, IRS advises that the
best way to protect yourself is to file your taxes early.
IRS apologizes for the delays and the confusion it has
caused.
Many are uneasy with such healing miracles. Medicine
and depth psychology seem to reduce to a purely
natural pathology what antiquity attributed to the
supernatural world. Yet many scientists recognize that
there is more to the human than the eye can see. Thus
we should not fall into the trap of a new reductionism
by having recourse exclusively to the empirical
sciences. Like the people in Capernaum, we who live
in a technological age must confront the same question,
“Who is this man?” (St. Andrew’s Missal, pg. 544)
The FAQs posted in the Archdiocese’s website have
been revised accordingly and were updated on Tuesday,
January 20, 2015.
With God’s Grace,
Fr. Sean Weeks
Pastor
If you have questions, please contact the IRS Identity
Protection Special Unit at 1-800-908-4490, or visit
a Taxpayer Assistance Center. Please do not contact
the Archdiocese or your parish or school. Neither the
Archdiocese nor your parish or school has any further
information on the issuance of IP-PINs.

ARCHBISHOP’S CATHOLIC APPEAL
2015
Fr. Dick Berg, CSC, will lead our parish’s Lenten
Mission on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, February
23-25. Sessions will be in the mornings at 9:00 am, and
repeated in the evenings at 7:00 pm in the Community
Center.
Most past contributors to the Archbishop’s Catholic
Appeal will receive a mailing from Archbishop Sample
within the next few days. At all Masses next weekend,
additional information will be provided in the bulletin
insert. Appeal funds are used to help fund Archdiocesan
offices and agencies that assist the parishes and their
people. In addition, part of the funds are used to assist
retired archdiocesan priests and seminarian education.
ANOINTING OF THE SICK
Friday, February 6, 2015
8:15 am Mass
The theme of the 2015 Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal is
“Teach, Bless, Serve.” As you consider the amount you
can pledge to help these ministries, please reflect on the
following: Contributing to the Archbishop’s Catholic
Appeal is one concrete way to “Teach, Bless, Serve”.
On Friday, Feb. 6th, we celebrate the sacrament of the
anointing of the sick at the 8:00 am morning Mass.
Please come to be anointed if you suffer from chronic
illness, a psychological condition, advanced age, or any
serious illness. Several priests will be on hand for the
sacrament. A reception follows after Mass.
Take a moment to honestly examine all the God-given
blessings in your life and then ask not yourself, but
ask God: “What is just?” By our baptism and our
confirmation in the Catholic church, each of us is called
to serve as a good shepherd. We’re called not only to
follow Christ but to be Christ.
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL REFLECTION
In the Gospel today, we read that because Jesus spoke
with authority his reputation spread throughout the
surrounding region of Galilee. As his disciples, we can
also speak with authority when we put our faith into
actions by helping the poor and suffering.
Please pray for the Lord’s guidance as you consider the
above reflections, and please give generously according
to the blessings God has given you.
More information is available Online for download at
http://www.archdpdx.org/appeal.
Have you considered answering the call to serve the
poor by joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul? All
are invited on Monday, February 2, at 7:00 pm, in the
Church Hall.

Job 7:1-4, 6-7; 1Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-23;
Mark 1:29-39
Abortion is the leading cause of death in the world,
ending more lives than cardiovascular disease, cancer,
AIDS, war, hunger ... or any other cause.*
Job recognizes the difficulties of life and how they push
us to give up hope. How does Christ’s presence in my
life offer hope?
You can change that.

Infantry who are deployed to Afghanistan in support of
Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Resolute
Support. All of the care packages, cards, stockings,
toiletries and other goods sent throughout this
deployment and specifically through the holiday season
are appreciated more than you will ever realize.
ST. PIUS X CYO TRACK AND FIELD
During deployments and especially throughout the
holidays, service members not only have to be aware of
the many dangers associated with being in harm’s way,
defending the freedoms that all Americans enjoy, but
they also endure the hardships of being separated from
their loved ones. Soldiers do their best to stay focused
on the mission and task at hand in order to return home
safe to family and friends. Every care package they
receive, regardless if they personally know the sender,
makes our jobs that much easier.
It’s that time of the year......registration is now open for
the 2015 St. Pius X CYO Track and Field season!
Participants compete in one of three groups:

Roadrunners - 3rd and 4th grade
Cubs - 5th and 6th grade
Cadets - 7th and 8th grade
To register, please check out the St. Pius X Track
website: http://www.stpiusxtrack.com/.
All soldiers, regardless of age, rank, status or family
situation, enjoy nothing more than to receive mail and
correspondence from back home and your devotion
to all service members reminds us that our efforts are
not in vain, and for this I thank you. We are eternally
grateful and look forward to our safe return in the near
future.

ST. PIUS X LENTEN SOUP SUPPERS!
Every Friday in Lent, we gather as a community to share
a simple meal of homemade soups, breads, macaroni and
cheese and peanut butter sandwiches. We pray together
and eat together, followed by a short program for adults
and activities for the children. Parish groups host each
supper, providing delicious food and fellowship. There’s
no charge for the evening. Donations are collected
for Operation Rice Bowl, the Catholic Relief Services
Lenten program that reaches out to people in our own
neighborhoods, as well as around the world.
Supper begins in the Community Center at 6:30 pm on
Fridays, following Stations of the Cross in the church
at 5:45 pm, and we are usually done by 7:30 pm.
Children are welcome – we have child-friendly foods
and activities. Come be part of your parish family, and
celebrate Lent 2015 with us!

buen pastor. Estamos llamados no sólo a seguir a Cristo, sino
¿Has venido a acabar con
nosotros?

BEYOND OUR PARISH WALLS
THIS OPEN HOUSE WILL “WAKE UP
THE WORLD!”
As part of the “Year of Consecrated Life,” the Sisters of
St. Mary of Oregon will host an open house on Sunday,
February 8, from 2:00 - 4:00 pm.
Each day, as thousands of people pass through the
intersection of Murray Blvd. and TV Highway in
Beaverton, they see a historic building with a majestic
dome and wonder about the lives of the women who
call that building their home. On Sunday, February 8,
they can find out.
The Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon (SSMO) will host
an open house from 2:00 - 4:00 pm in the SSMO
Motherhouse, 4440 SW 148th Avenue, Beaverton.
The Sisters invite guests to see their home and to learn
about religious life in general. A tour will include the
“Our Lady of Perpetual Help” Chapel, where Sisters
pray and worship together. It will also showcase the
Sisters’ domestic life and private living quarters. The
open house will be an opportunity for guests to talk to
the Sisters and ask questions about their lives of prayer
and service. Guests should allow at least 20-30 minutes
for their visits.
RAISING DIVERSE VOICES OF
FAITH TO STRENGTHEN OREGON
COMMUNITIES
The 2015 Interfaith Advocacy Day will bring together
hundreds of people from many religious traditions from
throughout Oregon for a day of worship, dialogue and
advocacy, co-sponsored by the Archdiocese. Activities
will include an interfaith panel on “Confronting Poverty,
Promoting Economic Equality and Preventing Gun
Violence,” training in advocacy skills, issue briefings
and meetings with our legislators. This event will be
Wednesday, February 11, 8:00 am - 4:00 pm, at St. Mark
Lutheran Church, 790 Marion Street NE, Salem, Oregon.
Contact Chris Kondrat for carpooling at (503) 644-4816,
or chris@kondrats.com.
