The Christmas season is almost upon us and New Year’s day will be here
before we know. This Christmas season my prayer for you comes from
a speech from Gregory of Nazianzus. I pray that the spirit of Christmas
does not come and go on the 25 th, but stays with us everyday this coming year. I pray that our bodies be living crèches; that everyday we become like the animals that came before Christ in the manger and give
praise to our creator. May we be like Mary whose ‘yes’ and belief in
God allowed Jesus to grow within her belly; that we can continue in accepting him in the Eucharist and in the belief that it truly is the body and
blood of Jesus.

few months. Our Fall Butterbraid & Turkey
Fundraiser raised $5,954.20. The top sellers
in each class are as follows: Pre-K—William

St. Anne’s Altar Society
Happy New Year to all of you! The month of
December was certainly a busy one for St.
Anne's! Our altar was decorated so beautifully thanks to all of you who made donations
for poinsettias and for the ladies who helped
to decorate for Christmas. Our parish is so
blessed to have the many individuals who
help decorate, clean, and take care of any
needs for the altar.
St. Anne's is also happy to take care of decorating the church for weddings. We are reserving dates on our calendar for
2015. Please contact Evelyn Petter at 8265675 if your have any questions or would like
to reserve a date.

We will soon begin preparing for the Lenten season. St. Anne's will again be decorating the altar
with lilies for Easter. Please watch the bulletin
for details if you would like to remember or honor a loved one by donating $5.00 for each name
submitted for Easter lilies.
The next St. Anne's meeting will be held in January. Information will be in the bulletin for the
exact date and time. Parishioners may join St.
Anne's by paying dues of $10.00 per year. We
only have meetings three times a year, but even if
you can't attend a meeting, your membership
helps us so much in taking care of the altar.

Men’s Fellowship Group

Our men’s Friday morning group is currently alternating between two programs:
“What Catholics Really Believe” and “How to be a Catholic Man in the World Today.”
These programs help us understand and fulfill our roles in our families, church, work place,
and community. The men continually express how much they enjoy the Friday morning fellowship and the sharing of experiences, while learning how our Lord wants us to live. All men
are welcome to join us.
The Central Texas Fellowship of Catholic Men will sponsor the third annual men’s conference on February 21, 2015 at St. Williams Catholic Church in Round Rock. The keynote
speakers will be Jesse Romero and Charlie Aeschliman. Watch the Sunday bulletin for more
information or go to www.CatholicArmorofGod.com for complete details. A charter bus will
be provided from St. Joseph’s Hall. Seat reservations are made through the rectory.

Welcome 2015!! CDA wishes all of
you a Happy New Year! With the
help of our members, the CCE students, and some generous contributions, CDA was able to provide Christmas gifts to
the former West Rest Haven residents currently located in nursing homes throughout the area. Over
100 packages were distributed and the presents and
visits brought smiles and hugs to so many people.
We thank all of you for making this worthwhile project such a success. We also provided gifts and food
to some families in our community which made their
Christmas a little brighter.
CDA provided goodie bags which were distributed by
Santa Claus at the Katy Depot in December. We assembled 250 goodie bags and had a wonderful time
bringing a little extra joy to the children in our area.
Area high school students are busy submitting scholarship applications to various organizations. CDA
provides local and state scholarships to relatives of
living CDA members in good standing. At least two
local scholarships will be given this year by CDA. If
you have any questions about how to apply, please
contact Julie Jensen at jensen.julie06@gmail.com.
CDA membership fees are due in February 2015. Annual dues in the amount of $25 may be placed in the
collection basket or dropped off at the rectory. If you

The CDA Taco Soup Fundraiser is scheduled for February 17, 2015, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the KC
Hall. The menu will consist of taco soup, a variety of
salads, cornbread, and delicious desserts. There will
also be a buchta bake sale, silent auction, and
raffle. Please see any CDA member to purchase raffle
tickets and contact Cyndi Lair or Julie Jensen to purchase meal tickets. Kathy Podsednik is chairing the
silent auction and may be contacted for items for the
auction.
The CDA Convention is coming up April 9-12, 2015, at
the Austin Renaissance Hotel. Watch for more information in the church bulletin.

Catholic Daughters Court Sacred Heart would like to invite you to join our organization. CDA's Circle of
Love program supports church and community projects, charities, benefits, and fundraisers, including national charities. In addition, we support of St. Mary's School projects, assist with weekly rosary, provide honor
guard for deceased members, provide clergy appreciation, mass intentions and support of priests, deacons, and
seminarians. CDA provides desserts and serving at the church picnic and events within our community including the annual Thanksgiving meal. We provide the goodie bags of the annual Santa visit, donations to
our local church fall festivals, Knights of Columbus, West Ministerial Alliance, CCE, explosion disbursements, nursing home residents’ Christmas Project. We contribute to the West youth through Junior Catholic
Daughters’ projects, Prom-Fest, Parker's Park Project, Teen ACTS, local scholarships, and more.
We meet the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at St. Joseph's Hall, with a break during the summer
months. You are welcome to join anytime throughout the year with membership fees of $25 due annually in
February. Dues can be mailed to Cyndi Lair, 299 County Road 1710, Clifton, TX 76634 or contact her at

C.C.E. News
The CCE year continues to be a very busy one.
The CCE students celebrated the Christmas season by collecting articles again this year for the
West Rest Haven and Assisted Living Residents
who were placed in Nursing Homes in communities around the West area. These articles
were sorted and divided by the Catholic Daughters who then delivered the gifts. It was very
heart-warming to see how generous these students were during the season of Christ’s birth.
Along with having a lesson each Wednesday,
the CCE classes take turns preparing for
Wednesday night Mass. They participate in
Mass by being lectors, altar servers and gift
bearers. The CCE and St. Mary’s 3rd grade and
RCIC classes are preparing for two of their Sacraments this year - their First Reconciliation and
First Holy Communion. We will have a parents’
meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 28 at 7:30 PM. At
least one of the parents of the St. Mary’s & CCE
3rd graders and RCIC students should attend
this mandatory meeting. We will be discussing
First Reconciliation which will be held on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 9:00 AM in our Church. We will
also be discussing First Holy Communion which
will be on Saturday, May 23.
The 10th grade CCE class has been busy preparing for Confirmation. They will be writing a report of the saint they have chosen for Confirmation. The Saint Report is due Sunday, Jan.
11. The 10th grade will be attending a Day Retreat on Saturday, Jan. 24 at the old KC Hall.
They will also be writing letters to Father Paul
explaining why they desire to be Confirmed and
what it means to each of them. Father Paul will
respond to each of the students’ letters. These
letters are due by Sunday, Jan. 25th.

to keep up with their children’s CCE activities.

SCHEDULED
SMS is closed January 5th for a staff in-service. Students return from the Christmas holiday on Tuesday,
January 6th to start the 4th 6-week period. The next
early releases (Pre-K and Kindergarten dismissing at
12:15 and grades 1st-8th dismissing at 12:30) on:
January 30th/PTC Staff Luncheon,
February 20th (end of 4th 6 weeks), and
March 6th for Spring Break.
Spring Break is the week of March 9th to the 13th with
students returning on Monday, March 16th.
ST. MARY’S SCHOOL LOVE RUN
St. Mary’s School is having a 5K and 1 mile Fun Run SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 14th at 9:00 am. The run will begin
and end at the school. Entry fees are: $10 students, $15 St. Mary’s Alumni, $20 Mail In/Hand In, $25 Late
Registration/Day of Race. Entry fee includes long sleeve race shirt and refreshments after the race including sausage
wraps, fresh fruit, hot chocolate, etc. Entry forms can be picked up at the school office or downloaded on the school

Happy New Year from everyone at KJZT #11
I would like to thank everyone who helped in any way
with our November bake sale. It was a success.
I would also like to thank all who continue to contribute to the food pantry. The pantry is always in need
of peanut butter, cereal, Hamburger Helper and
canned meats. All donations are welcome.
The Christmas party was held at St. Martin’s Hall on
December 14. At the meeting preceding the party, we
held elections of new officers. Officers for 2015 are:

Secretary; and Joyce Nors, Treasurer. The pre-Easter bake
sale was brought up for discussion as to what project would
benefit from half of the proceeds. The other half is to support our scholarship program. The half that is dedicated to
a project is matched by the Catholic Family Fraternal. A
motion was made and approved to donate this to the youth
group which will be raising money to attend the World
Youth Day held in Poland in 2016.
The January meeting will be held on the 11th after the
7:30 a.m. Mass. The pre-Easter bake day will be held
March 28th at the Parish Center.

The KJZT juniors will install their new officers at the January 11th meeting at St. Mary’s Parish Center. Installation will be at 4:00 pm followed by a meeting. The officers for 2015 are: President – Nathan (Tiger) Chupik; Vice-President – Coleman Wolf; Secretary – Mikayla Kaluza; Treasurer – Nicolas Hovde and Reporter –
Cameron Wolf. Betty Kostecka, who was the Junior Director, is retiring after 20 years and Sherri Zacharias
will be the new Junior Director. We want to thank Betty Kostecka for her many years of service.
There will be no meeting in February. There will be a meeting on March 8 th at the St. Mary’s Parish Center
and after the meeting, juniors will start making corsages for the women who were former residents of the West
Rest Haven. If the residents are not back in the West nursing home, we will see that the corsages are delivered
to them before Mother’s Day. On March 28th we will be helping with the bake sale.

Happy New Year!!!
Hard to believe another year has flown by. I trust everyone had a Merry Christmas and wish you all the best for
the New Year.
Things have slowed down now that the holidays are over. The KC’s are sponsoring a basketball
Free Throw Contest on Sunday, January 11th, at the St. Mary’s Gym. All girls and boys ages 9-14
are encouraged to participate. Registration will begin at 2:00 PM and competition to begin at 2:30
PM. Winners advance to District competition and from there, Diocesan and then State. So come
out and show off your free throw skills.
Lenten fish fries are still in planning stages. Watch the bulletin and the West News for details.
As always Council meetings are on the 1st Wednesday of each month at 7:00 PM. All members are encouraged
to attend and participate in the activities of the Council. It is your Council and your input is valuable. We
usually have a meal after the meetings so please join in.

Society of St. Vincent dePaul

As temperatures dropped and the winter weather caused utility bills to rise, calls for assistance to the local Conference of the Society of St. Vincent dePaul increased. Members
have been busy visiting homes and providing prayers and assistance for families and the elderly.
Our parishioners have continued to be very generous in their donations each month when the Black Bag is
passed among the pews. Please remember, as Father Paul explained, to reach for the black bag and pass it to
the next person in the pew and say a little prayer for the needy as you pass it along. Your prayers are needed.
During the last quarter of the calendar year, our Conference paid over $8,743 in utilities, rent, temporary
lodging, and food while collecting $7,121 from our Black Bag collections and additional donations from
members and parishioners.
Another very successful project, thanks to the contributions of our parishioners, was the Christmas Meal in a
Bag project. We gave out over 50 blue plastic and re-usable bags with a list of specific items needed to provide
a wonderful Christmas meal and were over-whelmed by the generosity of so many of you!! The families who
received the Christmas Meal Bags, along with a dozen eggs and a ham or turkey, were very thankful. I especially want to thank our Secretary Candace for organizing the project and the teams that spent the Saturday
before Christmas delivering the many bags.
If you are interested in becoming a Vincentian, please call me at 826-3481. We are in need of more members
that are able to assist with family visits and answering the SVdP cell phone. The more helping hands we have,
the lighter the load.
If you would like to schedule a Home Visit to investigate resources and assistance available, please call 254297-9190 on Tuesday or Thursday between 10 AM and 6 PM. You may leave a voice-mail message, if you call
outside the hours of operation and a Vincentian will call you back when available.

The Diocesan Council of Catholic Women is gearing up for the winter and early spring months with several meetings
and our convention. The Austin DCCW Board meeting will be held January 13th at Holy Trinity Parish in Llano.
Dianne Friend, Fr. Paul, and myself attend these board meetings and bring back information to our local DCCW
group.
The Northern Council of Catholic Women will have their quarterly meeting on February 11th at St. Joseph's Hall in
West and will be hosted by the ladies of Assumption Parish. The meeting will begin at 10:00 a.m. and I urge ladies
from our parish to attend and see what DCCW is all about. We have a business meeting first and lunch is served following the meeting. Fr. Paul is the Spiritual Advisor for the Northern Council and we have a good representation at
our meetings from the West ladies. Quarterly meetings are also hosted by St. John's, Waco; St. Mary's, Waco; Sacred
Heart, Waco; and St. Francis, Waco.
The DCCW convention will be held April 20—21st in Killeen at the Shiloh Hotel. Since the convention is nearby, I
hope many ladies from West can attend the convention. Watch for more information about the convention as it becomes available in the church bulletin.

SCOUTING NEWS

On behalf of me and our troop, we would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year. This is a time to reflect upon the past
twelve months and look forward to the next twelve. Resolutions are a way to guide each one of us into a positive direction toward
a goal. Many scouts, including myself, have started something only to have it lost as hurdles get in the way of the progress towards that goal. However, by working together as a team with support and encouragement from other scouts and our community,
I feel that we can be successful in reaching whatever goals we set for ourselves.
We would like to invite you all to “Like” our Official Facebook Page, West Boy Scout Troop 494. This is an excellent way to
keep up to date with current events and troop activities. We continue adding photos of our events to our page so that the community can follow our scouting adventures.
Troop 494 was recently notified that we have the opportunity for a Philmont Trek in July 2016. A Trek Crew is made up of 12
people- 2 Adults and 10 Scouts who are the age of 14-18. We will again start our monthly Hamburger Sack Lunches in the
Spring to help the kids earn their way. More details to follow in the next newsletter.
