PRAYER AND WORSHIP
LENTEN REGULATIONS 2015
CELEBRATING THE EUCHARIST
Lent begins Ash Wednesday,
February 18, 2015
Masses will be
8:00 AM, 12:00 Noon, 6:00 PM
8:30 PM (In Spanish)
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are
days of fast. On days of fast, one full meal is allowed. Two
lesser meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken
according to each one's needs, but together they should not
equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not
permitted. Catholics who have completed their 18th year are
bound by this law until the beginning of their 60th year.
Ash Wednesday and Fridays of Lent are also days of
abstinence. On days of abstinence, meats should not be
taken at any meal. The law of abstinence binds all Catholics
who have completed their 14th year.
The Obligation to observe, as a whole or "substantially", the
penitential days specified by the Church is a serious
obligation. The Code of Canon Law states:
"On these days of Penance, the faithful are in a special
manner to devote themselves to prayer, to engage in works
of piety and charity, to deny themselves, by fulfilling their
obligations more faithfully and especially by observing the
fast and abstinence…"
May this Holy Lenten season provide us an opportunity for
deepening our faith, hope and love through a life of deeper prayer,
penitential practices, and works of charity.

Welcome the Visiting Madonna - While we are
encouraged to embrace Jesus’ cross, perhaps the next best
thing we can do as the faithful is to turn to the Blessed
Mother for guidance…”Blessed Mother, please help me.” As
human beings, we can’t do everything. But the Blessed
Mother can go to her Son Jesus and do wonders.
The Knights of Columbus are offering intimate prayer
devotions in your own homes to all parishioners so that
every family may experience visitation for one week from
our Visiting Madonna. Families will begin to experience a
sense of peace, quiet and reflection while saying the Rosary
as a family with Our Lady. The family that prays together
stays together.
If you are interested in participating in
welcoming the Visiting Madonna, please call Sam Konrad at
(843) 399-7003 or email him at skonrad1@sccoast.net.
This week, The Visiting Madonna will be presented to
Joe & Linda Reina at the 10:00 AM Mass.

STEWARDSHIP
THIS WEEK—NO SECOND COLLECTION
NEXT WEEK—SECOND COLLECTION
Church in Central and Eastern Europe
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Soon, our diocese will take up the Collection
for the Church in Central and Eastern
Europe. The collection offers a way for
Catholics in the United States to stand in
solidarity with those who experience the
ongoing effects of living under communism.
Grants funded by the collection support pastoral projects,
scholarships, and Catholic organizations working in areas
formerly under Soviet control. The bishops and people of
these regions still face enormous challenges in restoring
church structures and in rebuilding the cultural and spiritual
life of the community, tasks that are often complicated by a
lack of religious freedom.
One funded group, a Czech association for women and
children and the protection of unborn life, has worked for 23
years to reduce the rate of abortions in the Czech
Republic. When the association opened its doors in 1990
after the Velvet Revolution, half of all pregnancies in the
country ended in abortion. Through innovative counseling
and support programs at six regional centers for women in
difficult situations, the association has played a major role in
reducing the abortion rate from 50 percent down to 20
percent. The centers work to protect the human dignity of
both mothers and children, advocating for the right to life of
the unborn.
Recently, the association experienced a crisis when the Czech
government withdrew operational support for its
programs. The Subcommittee on the Church in Central and
Eastern Europe provided a critical bridge grant that allowed
the association to continue its operations while searching for
a permanent funding solution. In 2014, the Czech Bishops’
Conference announced that it would fund the association's
operating expenses from its own budget, thereby guaranteeing
the future of the association and its crucial work.
In order for projects like this one to continue, the collection
needs your help. Please be generous. Your donation will
continue to restore and build the future of the Church in
Central and Eastern Europe. Thank you and God bless you.
In the Lord’s Peace,
Most Reverend Robert E. Guglielmone

2015 Bishop’s Annual Appeal
Every year for the month of February, Bishop Guglielmone asks
each parish in the Diocese of Charleston to participate in
promoting and celebrating the important ministries of our
diocesan church. Our Diocese is unique in that we cover the
entire state of South Carolina. When we support the Bishop’s
Annual Appeal we are not only supporting families and those in
need here locally, but also individuals in others parts of the state.
The financial goal for the appeal is Three Million Dollars
($3 million). We are also aiming to surpass 25% participation
from all of our diocesan households. For the second year in a
row, our Bishop has challenged all 116 parishes and missions to
focus on increased participation. As a parish, we also have a
financial target of $67,965.00 over the next ten months.
The Bishop’s Annual Appeal will help address the following
items:
* Support for Seminarians
* Outreach Ministries To the Poor
* Catholic School Tuition Grants
* Catholic Charities
* Funding for Retired Priests
* College Campus Ministry
* Youth and Young Adult Ministry
The details of the Appeal are outlined in your campaign brochure
which will be mailed to you. If you do not receive this material in
the mail, it is available today in the back of the church.
March 15th will be Pledge Weekend in our parish. At Mass, we
will take a moment to ask for your gift and will collect your
completed pledge envelope.
As we think about our support for this year’s Bishop’s Annual
Appeal, please know that as a parish we are aiming for an equal
sacrifice from all of our parishioners, not an equal gift. Not
everyone can make the same size donation, but we feel that
everyone is able to make a gift that is proportionate to how God
has blessed you and your family. No gift is too large, and no gift
is too small. Thank you again for your support of our local
parish and the Diocese.

Dios no quiere personas
marginadas. Par El, todos somos iguales. Dios siempre está atento a sanar todas nuestras enfermedades y
dolencias. Por lo tanto, pidámosle a la Virgen María, para que Ella,
nos ayude a acercarnos a Jesús con fe y confianza, al igual que el
leproso del Evangelio, y así seamos curados especialmente de
nuestros pecados.
Dios los bendiga.
Padre Orlando.
