Pope Francis Page 3 FEBRUARY 8, 2015 Pastor’s Corner . . . Beauty in the midst of darkness. As I asked a few weeks ago, is it cold enough yet? Even though we have also had the storms accompanying this even colder weather, and we have the barren trees, there is the beauty of seeing the snow blanketing the ground. Can we see the beauty in the midst of darkness, can we appreciate the good things that we have in the midst of struggles? Sometimes it is very difficult to see the good. I’ve been there, probably you have been there. The beauty is that in the midst of the struggles, darkness, and despair, God never, ever abandons us. He is right there for us walking with us, holding our hands, comforting us, and offering us His tender care. Some of the most precious moments in my life have been where I felt I had nothing, was alone, and in despair and God broke through those moments to touch my heart. In the dead of winter, don’t despair for God is with you. “Answer me when I call, my saving God. When troubles hem me in, set me free; take pity on me, hear my prayer” (Psalm 4:2). Page 4 FEBRUARY 8, 2015 As the 2015 Catholic Charities Appeal kicks off this weekend, I ask that you consider how you can Give Hope to the neediest in our area. The reality is that one-third of Philadelphia’s population lives below the poverty line and rely on your generosity for a hot meal, a warm place to sleep, and a safe place to learn. This year, our parish goal is $31,912. It is important that each parish and each parishioner does his or her part to reach our parish goal, so we can raise the needed $10 million for the Catholic Charities Appeal. Last year, we reached 98% of our goal. Thank you for your generosity. Four Stages of Prayer Course Is your prayer life in a rut? Are you longing to connect with God in prayer? In preparation for the Synod of Bishops meeting in October in Rome, questions are being disseminated and collated. The consultation requires a thoughtful reading and reflection on this document (Lineamenta) and a response to questions that accompany it. This document can be found in English at http://www.vatican.va. The questions concerning the family can be found online and completed electronically at www.archphila.org by clicking on the link “Consultation of the Clergy and Faithful for 2015 Synod of Bishops in Rome.” Responses to the questions are to be returned by Monday, March 9, 2015, to this designated e-mail address, 2015SynodofBishops@archphila.org. All responses will be collated and form a general response of the clergy and faithful of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia to assist with the preparation for the 2015 Synod of Bishops. Thank you for your time and interest in this consultation. Let us pray together for the greater proclamation of the Gospel and its reception among us on Christian family.
