LIVING YOUR FAITH Lent: A Sign of Contradiction Of all of the liturgical seasons in the Catholic Church, Lent is the one that is the most obvious, both to Catholics and to our non-Catholic friends. While the Easter season is longer, most people no longer observe it in any meaningful way once the Octave of Easter (Divine Mercy Sunday) has passed. Advent has been subsumed into the "holiday shopping season"; Christmas is over almost before it has begun. Only the 40 days of Lent remain today as a sign of contradiction, a period of prayer and penance that the world cannot help but notice. FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK T omorrow night, February 23rd, Father Michael Duffy from the St. Francis Inn will be joining us for a Mass at 7:30 P.M. Please join us What you need to know for Lent: Lenten Fast and Abstinence Requirement: Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast (no eating between meals) on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Also all Catholics 14 years and older must abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent. During Lent there will be an extra Mass with Confes- sions on all Tuesdays. Confessions: 7:00PM to 7:30PM and Mass at 7:30PM. On Fridays: Stations of the Cross at 1:15PM and 7:00PM in the Church. Also there will be Morning Mass at 6:30AM, and Adoration Chapel will be open from 7:00AM to 8:00PM for private prayer time. I have personally heard him speak on this topic and it was EXCELLENT AND MEMORABLE. I am very grateful to him for accepting our invitation. Plan now to attend! This is an important spiritual event for the parish and important for your Lenten journey. Please invite your family of all ages and friends to join us. God Bless You and your Families, Rev. Pray for our outreach, the poor and the Franciscan Priests, Brothers, Sisters and the young adults who give one or more years of their lives to help others. Did you know? What is the Significance of the 40 Weekdays Before Easter? The 40 days of Lent which precede Easter is based on two Biblical accounts: the 40 years of wilderness wandering by the Israelites and our Lord's 40 days in the wilderness at which point He was tempted by Satan. Each year the Church observes Lent where we, like Israel and our Lord, are tested. We participate in abstinence, times of fasting, confession and acts of mercy to strengthen our faith and devotional disciplines. The goal of every Christian is to leave Lent a stronger and more vital person of faith than when we entered. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states, "The seasons and days of penance in the course of the liturgical year (Lent, and each Friday in memory of the death of the Lord) are intense moments of the Church's penitential practice. These times are particularly appropriate for spirKey Dates: itual exercises, penitential Feb 18: Ash Wednesday liturgies and pilgrimages Mar 19: Solemnity of St. as signs of penance, vol- Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed untary self-denial such as Virgin Mary Mar 25: Solemnity of the Anfasting and almsgiving, nunciation of the Lord and fraternal sharing Mar 29: Palm Sunday (charitable and missionApr 2-4: The Sacred Triduum ary works)."
