ST. ANNE CATHOLIC COMMUNITY BASILIAN FATHERS ARCHDIOCESE OF GALVESTON-HOUSTON LA COMUNIDAD CATÓLICA DE SANTA ANA PADRES BASILIANOS ARQUIDIÓCESIS DE GALVESTON-HOUSTON We, the Catholic Community of St. Anne, aspire to follow the example of Jesus Christ. We foster holiness by encouraging each other on our journey of faith. We seek the kingdom of God as a Eucharistic community. We witness the presence of the living Christ by our profound hospitality, respect and love for all. SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT SEGUNDO DOMINGO DE LA CUARESMA We celebrate Lent caught in the tension between the two images of the first and second Sundays, between temptation and transfiguration. Like Abraham, we must walk in faith through the trial, confident that “the sufferings of the present are as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed in us” (Rom. 8:18). For “what we shall later be has not yet come to light, but we know that when it comes to light we shall be like Him for we shall see Him as He is” (1 Jn 3:2). ST. Ana PASTORAL MESSAGE MENSAJE PASTORAL It’s been said that Lent is, above all, about baptism. It’s about the baptism of catechumens who will be welcomed into our Catholic Christian Community at this year’s Easter Vigil Liturgy. We should make it a priority to give prayerful support to these individuals in their preparations for baptism. Lent is also about our own baptisms when we will be given the opportunity to renew our baptismal vows to be more committed followers of our Lord Jesus Christ at this same Vigil Liturgy or at one of the Easter Sunday Masses. These 40 days of Lent began on Ash Wednesday when we were signed with ashes and encouraged to “turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel.” The Lord Jesus himself suggested three practices to help us in this turning away process: prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Besides fasting, Lent’s spirit calls for less entertainment and simpler, more wholesome living all around. Many opportunities for community prayer are listed in the parish bulletin: e.g., daily Mass and the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Stations of the Cross, Bible study groups, praying with the scriptures (Lectio Divina), a morning program of Monastic Reflection and retreats for men and women at the Cenacle Retreat House. Finally, almsgiving opportunities abound: in addition to our monthly collections for the needy, there is the Diocesan Services Fund (DSF) that supports the numerous charities throughout the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. IN TALKING WITH YOUR CHILDREN, have you neglected to raise the call to Church ministry? The process of answering God’s call begins in childhood. Throughout adolescence and adulthood, the attitudes assumed in childhood begin to influence the course of one’s life. A vocation or a talent will not grow to fruition unless it is nurtured in childhood and adolescence by a parent. This ensures that all ministries benefit from your gift. How can I confirm that my parish is getting credit for my donation? Check with your parish. Parishes are able to download reports from the Archdiocesan website which are updated twice each week. Contact the Development Department if your donation is not credited. ANNE SCHOOL NEWS Love of Nature Meets Computer Science The 6th grade girls of the Shamrock STEM club have been hard at work designing a new app that helps visitors to the Houston Arboretum. The STEM club is an after-school organization of junior high girls who have an interest in science, technology, engineering and math. The girls’ initial idea was to create signage at the arboretum that would help visitors identify trees, plants, vines, lily pads and animals. Ruth Linbeck, one of the members, was touring the Houston Arboretum with her mom, wondering what type of beautiful flower was on a nearby tree. That is when the idea struck for a way to help visitors identify the sights. Using dichotomous keys and picture grids the students want to help visitors identify species on the trail maps. Mrs. Keusenkothen, the group’s adviser said “the girls are learning computer science, logical thinking and using a flowchart to create this app.” NOTICIAS DE LA ESCUELA SANTA ANA The students are using the website App Architect to help them design the app. A generous grant from the Meadows Charitable Trust Foundation is assisting with the signage. The Houston Arboretum will be able to add QR codes to all the existing signage so that visitors can access the app while touring the facility. This past Friday, the girls from this team, Ruth Linbeck, Kailey Clifford, Ellie Westby and Maggie Yu, along with Mrs. Keusenkothen, were invited to come tour the facilities at the Arboretum and meet with some of the trail guides and naturalists. The students learned how the ears on a turtle differentiate what type of turtle they are looking at and how to use leaf patterns to differentiate plants. Mrs. Keusenkothen said the girls still have a lot of work to accomplish but are excited at the prospect of launching this app. The goal is to have the app in the beta testing mode by April 1.
