I thank you all for the wonderful celebrations of St. Francis and the beginning of a Jubilee year for the friar presence in Hartford. It was good to see so many people at the Center on Saturday as we enjoyed pizza, sandwiches, wonderful desserts as well as a variety of beverages. As I looked around I was struck by the intergenerational mix of those gathered. I thank all, who under Trudi White’s guidance, helped to set up, serve and clean up after the celebration in the Center. I thank all who were involved in the liturgies - musicians, lectors, servers, ministers, ushers, sacristans, and those who brought their stuffed animals! I hope you noticed that our lectors now include young people. We have some fine readers who will proclaim the Word at the 10 AM Mass during the school year. This is a wonderful and long past due opportunity for shared ministry that is intergenerational as well. Perhaps with these young voices we will hear the text in new ways. It was also great to bless and hear our bells! As we are in the back-to-school mode and we have many children at our weekend liturgies, I want to remind parents to please accompany your child for the bathroom breaks that may be required. This is the weekend of our Ministry Fair! I encourage you to ● Are you curious about the many ministries and activities of St. Patrick-St. Anthony Church and the Franciscan Center for Urban Ministry? Plan to join us after any of the weekend Masses on October 11 & 12 for the Ministry Fair. If you cannot join us then, please contact Trudi White, CVA in the Office of Volunteer Ministry or at twhite@spsact.org or take a look at our Ministry Guide on the website (click the “serve” button). ● Our House of Bread Meal Teams are seeking additional members. Evenings, Sat. 10:45-1 or Sunday, 7:45-11 a.m. The need for meals in Hartford is increasing and this supper is one way our hungry neighbors can access food. For more information, please contact Jean Wilson, or call Trudi in the parish office. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION In today’s second reading, St. Paul thanks the Philippians for being willing to share in his hardships and promises that God, in turn, will fully supply all their needs. Our God truly cannot be outdone in generosity! LIVING STEWARDSHIP We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who share their gifts by cooking or providing meals for the homebound or those in need at soup kitchens or community centers. wander over to the Center to consider the many opportunities available for ways of sharing your gifts. It is also an opportunity to connect with other folks, and naturally there will be something to eat! I am grateful for all of the many ministries that have developed over the years here at St. Patrick-St. Anthony. Your creativity and commitment enable the reciprocal experiences of God’s grace to be made manifest - you are God-bearer and recipient of God’s presence. I am also very aware of the often unseen or under-appreciated ministries that abound. Parenting; caring for the sick or aged; care for friends or family members struggling with physical, emotional or mental illness; presence; growing in relationship as partner or spouse; and simply paying attention to life’s myriad situations are all forms of ministry. SPIRITUALITY AND MORALITY: The Role of Prayer in the Moral Life Thursday, October 23, 6:30—9:00 p.m. Does it make a difference to the moral life if you are a person of prayer? In the pre‐Vatican II manuals of moral theology, prayer was treated largely as an obligation in the moral life; for example, a person had to attend mass every Sunday under pain of sin. The relationship between the moral life and the spiritual life was viewed in terms of duties coupled with penalties if one failed to perform one’s duties. Can we speak in terms other than obligation when discussing the relationship of spirituality and morality? This presentation will explore the various ways that our prayer life and our moral experience enrich each other. Presenter: Fr. Kenneth Himes, OFM Suggested Offering: $10.00 Fr. Kenneth R. Himes, OFM, is a Franciscan friar and former chairman of the Department of Theology at Boston College where he continues to teach theological ethics. A native of Brooklyn, NY he was ordained a Catholic priest in 1976 and holds a Ph.D. in religion and public policy from Duke University. Fr. Himes is a past President of the Catholic Theological Society of America and the author of nearly one hundred essays in a variety of academic and popular periodicals. His recent book, Christianity and Political Order, was published by Orbis Books in 2013 and received the First Place Award in the area of social teaching from the Catholic Press Association this year. REEL FAITH: The Jewish Cardinal Tuesday, October 28, 6:30—8:30 p.m. Contemporary films can spark valuable discussion for people of faith. Join us as we view the following movie to explore our faith, traditions and moral values through our mutual exchange of ideas. “The Jewish Cardinal” film accurately describes a real man, Jean‐Marie Lustiger, the Paris‐born son of Jewish immigrants from Poland, who maintained his Jewish identity even after converting to Catholicism at a young age and later joining the priesthood. Quickly rising within the ranks of the Church, he was appointed Archbishop of Paris by Pope John Paul II, and then made a Cardinal. The movie keeps a steady focus on the strange way this “man of God and of contradictions” insists on being both Jewish and Catholic, and sometimes being a bridge between the two. Film is unrated; 1 hour and 36 minutes in length, with subtitles. Facilitator: Marion Kingsbury Free Will Offering HOW THE WORLD WORSHIPS - JUDAISM One Hundred Blessings a Day: Cultivating Gratitude Wednesday, November 5; 6:30—8:30 p.m. This series is designed to cultivate our understanding of one another’s faith traditions. By exploring the richness of various world religions we hope to celebrate our diversity while cherishing what we hold in common; to build bridges and develop appreciation for each other’s beliefs.
