Psalm 23 Today we remember in thanksgiving our faithfully departed loves ones, as well as all those who have died in the faith. We celebrate their souls now in the hand of God. At some level, Jesus knew about his own impending death. When John the Baptist died, when Joseph died, when Lazarus died ... these mirrored back to him his own death as more imminent. And because of this, he saw all as gift from his Father. Perhaps that is why in every Mass, and especially this weekend of All Saints and All Souls, we hold up the memory of those who have died, like a backdrop to the dying and rising of Jesus Christ. To keep present before us a real understanding that the action of our lives are more important than the manner of our deaths. That beyond the eulogies, there was a time we lived in history and contributed something to the betterment of our world and those we love. Maybe like Jesus, our deaths are never on the back burner, so maybe we should live each day well, with Christ our Good Shepherd to show us the way. A warm welcome today to all of our guests and visitors who join us for the annual Omelette Festival. Word for the Day: Gratitude is a flower that blooms in noble souls. Pope Francis When we understand how precious each moment is, we can treat each breath, each moment, as a newborn baby. Michelle McDonald Multiple Mass Intentions Being Accepted Due to a change in our Church policy, St. Mary Magdalen is now accepting “multiple” mass intentions for any given day of the week. Previously, only one intention was permitted per mass. Our present life is given only to gain the eternal one and if we don't think about it, we build our affections on what belongs to this world, where our life is transitory. When we have to leave it we are afraid and become agitated. Believe me, to live happily in this pilgrimage, we have to aim at the hope of arriving at our Homeland, where we will stay eternally. Meanwhile we have to believe firmly that God calls us to Himself and follows us along the path towards Him. He will never permit anything to happen to us that is not for our greater good. He knows who we are and He will hold out His paternal hand to us during difficulties, so that nothing prevents us from running to Him swiftly. But to enjoy this grace we must have complete trust in Him. ~ St. Pio of Pietrelcina Page 5 This Weekend MAINTENANCE FUND Next Weekend MONTHLY INSURANCE COLLECTION Donations for Youth Group Meals Please consider helping to feed our youth group members for one of their Youth Nights. Your donation of $50 will help to cover the expenses of providing food for an evening activity. Just make note of your offering to “Youth Group” and send to the Church office. Thanks so much. “And I shall raise him on the last day” John 6: 37-40 While we look forward to being raised on the last day it is good for us to celebrate the Faithful Departed who have completed their journey and have faced Jesus to answer the question “What did you do with the gifts that God gave to you to use for your own benefit and for the benefit of others?” They are a reminder to us that we do not need to be perfect to become a saint but that when we fail to be all that God created us to be, we can acknowledge our failure and receive forgiveness and strength to do better in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Have we availed ourselves of the great gift of the Sacrament of Forgiveness and Reconciliation? If we have not done so recently, or as often as we should, now is a good time. The first step to being a good steward of all that God has given us is to be a good steward of our soul. Time, Talent, and Treasure PRAYER FOR HURRICANE SEASON O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season we turn to you, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son on our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your divine Son to reach heavenly Jerusalem where a stormless eternity awaits us. Amen Imprimatur: August 29, 1967 Maurice Schexnayder, Bishop of Lafayette In Louisiana ALL Souls’ Day All Souls’ Day, the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, the feast when Catholics put prayerful emphasis on the souls in Purgatory. “The church gathers not to mourn our beloved dead, but to give voice to our hope for them. The basis for this hope lies in Jesus himself who passed from death to life. The faithful departed who were ‘buried with him through baptism’ will ‘be united with him in the resurrection’ Surely this is a day of hope! “ Living Liturgy A Word of Consolation If a tiny baby could think, it would be afraid of birth. To leave the only world it has known would seem a kind of death. But immediately after birth the child would find itself in loving arms, showered with affection and cared for at every moment. Surely the baby would say, “I was foolish to doubt God’s plan for me. This is a beautiful life.” For the Christian, passing through death is really a birth into a new and better world. Those who are left behind should not grieve as if there was no hope. Life is changed, not taken away. Our dear ones live on, in a world beautiful beyond anything we can imagine. With Jesus and Mary they await the day when they will welcome us with joy. “Do not grieve too much,” they say to us. “We are living and are still with you.” Comfort For Those Who Mourn So many people see in death nothing but a cruel separation from loved ones. Even good and religious people make that sad mistake. In death there is certainly the very real pain and sorrow of physical separation. But it is equally true that our loved ones remain with us. They do not just go off to some dark and distant place. They simply continue into eternal life. We do not see them because we are still in the darkness of this world. But their spiritual eyes, filled with the light of heaven, are always watching us as they wait for the day when we shall share their perfect joy. We are born for heaven and we end this life of tears to begin our life of endless happiness. This may be the greatest and surest comfort in time of mourning. A firm faith in the real and continual presence of our loved ones has brought the conviction and consolation that death has not destroyed them, nor carried them away. Rather it has given them life! A life with power to know fully and to love perfectly. With this new life and new power our loved ones are always present to us, knowing and loving us more than ever before. The tears that dampen our eyes in times of mourning are tears of homesickness, tears of longing for our loved ones. But it is we who are away from home, not they! Death has been for them a doorway to an eternal home. They are still with us, lovingly and tenderly waiting for the day when we, too, will enter the doorway of our eternal home. It is such a mistake to see death as separation and nothing more. For us who believe, death is a preparation for eternal union with those we love, in the peace and joy of heaven.
